buy a real book and get a code or something from it and load its contents onto d&N beyond? l think that,lf its not currently possable to buy a physical book in a store and use a code in it to unlock the books on here, that lt should be. like l know l am not the only one that thinks lt would be great if dnd beyond and WOTC worked something out.
If you buy a digital copy of the book on DDB should you get a code to go into Barnes & Nobels and get a free hardback copy of the book? That’s basically the same as what you’re asking for in reverse.
You’re not paying D&D Beyond for the content. You’re paying them for the countless hours spent digitizing, coding, hotlinking, inserting tooltips, making it all searchable, and getting it all to work in dynamic character sheet and encounter builder tools. So no, they shouldn’t be expected to do all that for free.
This is often asked about books and eBooks in general.
What stops a person from going into a store, copying down the code and then using it on DnD Beyond?
Even if you celephane wrap the books, someone can go in, remove the celephane and copy the code.
l was thinking the code would be behind a scratch off thing that will make it so that you know the code has been tamperd with/used by someone else (like pokemon event cards)

l agree that they should be payed for their amazing work, but l (and likely many others) like the ease of simply fliping to the page you need, rather then (what i am asumeing how it works) scroll down the pdf till you find what you need, which makes the books usefull, but you cant axcess the content on this site unless you buy from here, and buying $600+ worth of stuff twice (once in store once in this site) is illogical.
and obviously if WOTC were to put d&d beyond unlock codes into the actual books, that would mean that a good deal bewteen this site and WOTC would have been made, which would compensate them (or something)
It's not a PDF you have to scroll here. There's a search bar at the top of the site - put in basically anything you're looking for and you go directly there. To me, it's WAY faster than going "what book is that in? was it XGtE? Or the Tome of Foes? Or SCAG? And what page was it on? Wait, that magic item was ONLY included in Dungeon of the Mad Mage, where did I put that?"
I have the Core Three books on my shelf, but since I found this site I haven't bought anything else in physical form.

Otherwise, for any physical books you already own, you can create personal homebrew on the site to use for character creation. It would just be a matter of using the homebrew creator and coping the content you want from the book onto the site.
Note: done this way, this content can't be published (as it's copyrighted), but it can be shared in a campaign where a Master Subscriber has enabled Content Sharing.
But, yeah, WOTC isn't going to put codes in books, at least not any time soon. People can, and will, just open them up in the store and get at the code, regardless of what the code might be behind. Then the book will lose a significant amount of value, because these books would NEED to be more expensive to cover the cost of the print out and the digitizing and development of the tools on DDB.
