I've been away from DnD for a while (started playing way back in 1st edition) and have played on and off over the years. I stumbled across D&D beyond and decided to give it a try with the hopes of getting family and friends to play through an online format. I created a character but couldn't determine if the creation process also included Xanathar's Guide to Everything options. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
If you have not purchased any materials on this website, the options only include those found in the Basic Rules set (so not all of the PHB options) and those included in the Element Evil Players’ Companion because those are the sources WotC has published for free. If you purchase any book, including Xanathar’s, then those options become available for use as well. You can also purchase specific pieces of content piecemeal, those purchases will reflect in the listed price for the rest of the book as credit towards that potential purchase.
Thank you. I'll give your home-brewed things a look. After I posted I took a look at market place and saw that options can be purchased. It's a shame that I already have the hard copy of Xanathar and WoTC now requires a purchase of an e-copy in order to use it in this format.
This website isn’t owned by WotC (the company that publishes D&D). This site is owned by a different company. It’s like an online bookstore that only sells digital versions of D&D products, and they invented all of these other really cool tools to use those products that we can use for free. But those tools are only legally allowed to let us use the products that are free from the publisher, or that this site sells us.
Keep in mind that DDB is not owned by WOTC: it is a separate company that must pay licensing fees to WOTC. They've also put a ton of work into the various tools available here.
If you are just using DDB for a character creator, you don't necessarily need to buy all of Xanathar's if you decide that homebrewing is too time consuming or complicated. You can purchase subclasses, spells, and the like individually. Many(though not all) of the spells in Xanathar's first appeared in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and that content is available for free. The EEPC spells that made it into Xanathar's were updated (if necessary) to be identical to their counterpart in Xanathar's, but are still available for free.
Thank you. I wasn't aware that DDB wasn't owned by WOTC. It is a great tool and I guess I'm only at the tip of the iceberg as far as what can be done here.
