Just realized that call lightning can do a ton of damage at once. At its base level, it does 3d10 damage when the target fails the dex save, plus another 1d10 if the if casting in stormy weather conditions. Then the spell's damage increases by 1d10 per slot level (but not the bonus damage from stormy leather). This means that if a druid casts this spell at 9th level in stormy conditions, they will be doing 10d10 lightning damage, which means that a level 17 druid is freaking terrifying.
Does anybody know if the bonus damage from stormy weather also increase when cast with higher spell slots (4d10 + 2d10 when cast at 4th level under stormy conditions, for example). I am unsure, and the spell description isn't very specific about it.
High level Druids are terrifying for many reasons, possibly the most powerful class in 5e. No, the additional damage from stormy weather does not also increase, only the base damage. So with a 4th level Spell Slot in a storm you can deal 5d10/turn with this spell.

Cool. Got it. Thanks.
Edit: how else would a high level druid be terrifying?

That is true. Shillelaigh may just be a cantrip, but it is really powerful because you can basically ignore non-magic attack resistances and immunities at level 1. I think druids can be more powerful than the evocation wizard, especially with the better hit dice and the ability to actually wear armor.
Call lightning, yeah , better than the wiz version.
Caveat: can only be used in area of diameter 240' (brain ref, no books on hand)
This means that It's only useable above ground in a wilderness setting, or underground in a HUGE cavern. Most castles don't have an area LG enough to cast it.

In most situations it's also going to be WAY harder to hit more than 1 thing with call lighting, out in the open like that how often are enemies going to all be within 5 feet of a point? The line attack is easier to setup to hit at least 2
Also it takes a decent number of lvl bumps for call lightning to get ahead of lightning bolt too, base a call lightning is 3-30 dmg, 4-40 in a storm. lightning bolt is 8-48 with no conditions required. It takes what.. 6th lvl to overcome lightning bolt and a storm? for top end dmg? 7d10 for 7-70 dmg vs a lightning bolt of 11-66?
Still competes really well with call lightning until it comes to multiple uses of call lightning, but than the wizard goes oh wait? HAH fireball!
Call Lightning upscales relatively well, but that's only because it's got some significant restrictions. It's good if you want to hit a single target multiple times, but most of its potential damage is likely to be wasted due to how short fights in D&D tend to be. Against large crowds, Fire Storm or Tsunami tends to be more effective (or for real giggles, if you've got Elemental Adept, cast Firestorm inside the Tsunami).
