I was reading about the Troll, Regeneration. The troll regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the troll takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the troll's next turn. The troll dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
Does this mean that the troll wont die unless killed with acid or fire due to regeneration?
I dont think the killing blow has to be fire or acid but it has to have been hit by fire or acid before the start of its turn. So if you hit it with fire and then you have a melee attack that kills it, it will still be dead. At least that is how i have always read it.
Hit it with fire, acid, or the Chill Touch cantrip (which prevents the target from regaining hit points for one round) and reduce it to zero hit points in the same round. The damage doesn't have to all be from one of those sources; so long as you hit it with something that shuts down its regen and get it to zero.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

I wouldn't rely on Chill Touch without asking the DM first. Technically the Troll still regenerates (as in: the trait is still working), it just doesn't gain back HP. The fluff text is also pretty adamant about only fire and acid being able to kill it. :-)
I would probably allow it (since there's also cantrips that deal acid or fire damage it doesn't feel unbalanced), but I can see how you could make an argument against it.

It just needs to have taken either fire or acid damage before the start of its next turn.

This is actually covered specifically in the sage advice: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/sac/sage-advice-compendium#Spellcasting under the heading "Specific Spells' Many DM's would consider it RAW as a result.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
