I am not sure where to post this but I am curious about what the general consensus is regarding the move to Clear Bases for pre-painted minis? It seems that WizKids is moving in this direction in all the new releases. Let me know if this is something already discussed or is it worth a topic/vote here?
I usually paint my own minis, so I rarely purchase pre-painted ones, but when I do, I don't particularly like clear bases.
How come? I love clear bases for war game minis. Is it the glare that you don’t like? A coat of matte finish Knocks that shine right out. Add a little shadow effect and a colored rim and it looks just like a highlighted avatar in a video game.
I used to, but with the clear ones it always looks like your minis are standing on exactly whatever the battlemat looks like. That way you don’t get guys standing on static grass in the middle of a blasted city or lava field.
See honestly I think clear is better. That way you can see the floor and gride lines more clearly. However, I voted against the clear base change... because it's a change. Now half of my minis are black, and the other half is clear. I bought the curse of strahd mini pack with the devil himself and it was black based. Now the new ones for other characters are going to be clear. That difference bugs me. Furthermore, it gets worse. I then go to my local gaming store, and it's the strahd minis but with clear bases. If I would have known they would re make them... I would have waited.
So now I feel like there is two choices. Re base my old minis, but it may look bad or damage them. Or paint the clear bases which is easier, but they may still look weird cause of mixed texture and shine, and I lose the benefits of clear bases.
For now I'm going to leave them the way they are until I figure out the best option.
Also a noteworthy thing. I've noticed the clear based minis have worse paint jobs. I'm not sure why? They look almost more waxy, maybe cause the plastic of the figure is clear as well, and it means the light layers of paint allow light to enter them? Not sure.

I don't know...I usually do my D&D mini bases in a "dungeon stone" color, and I prefer static grass for war-game minis.
