This is brought up consistently but no one seems to care for research before making a post. DDB is a third party website affiliated with WoTC but no owned nor operated by them. Therefore no, owning a hardbacked book is not an automatic "I should get an online key." Buying a hard covered murder mystery book from a local book store does not get you the same book on your e-reader. Two different entities means you pay for two different uses.
This is like a customer saying if they buy a game on playstation then they should get it on xbox too for free. Or if they buy a physical playstation game then they should have it added to their digital account too. But I never see anyone asking those questions, yet it happens all the time with this website.
Not going to happen with DDB they are against it. We may see it potentially down the road. If you don't want to pay for DDB there are other online tools out there but they aren't "legit"

It is not merely a matter of DDB being against it so much as they and WoTC being separate companies and DDB getting nothing out of any such arrangement unless WoTC paid them for it for some reason. Rather unlikely to happen for pretty obvious reasons.
sure it is cross promotion benefits both mediums not only print. I judge motives based on actions they haven't used cross promotions so both WOTC and DDB are against it. Remember the game came out in 2014/2015 so by this point if they were going to do it they would have by now.

It is really easy to toss around words like 'cross promotion' when you are talking about giving out someone else's product free. Not sure why it matters when it came out. When you buy a newly printed copy of a book first published back in the depths of time, you do not get a free online copy, nor does purchasing an eBook, again, regardless of when first published, mean you get a free hard copy. The publishing business does not work that way. Nor is that likely to change due to the nature of intellectual property.
There are folks that cannot afford the physical books, but can afford the digital books it would be awesome but really with different companies it will be hard to do it. As their would be so many scams like you go to a bookstore buy the book go home use the code then return the book for your dough, now you have the book for free and whomever actually buys the book you used gets hosed and that is just off the top of my head, I know lots of folks wouldn't do that but enough would as I have learned that never ever be surprised at how crappy some folks can be to others.

the quoted text is in response to saying DDB isn't against cross promotion. So the fact the game came out so long ago if they had any interest in doing so they would have. De facto are against cross promotion. Also your being incredibly disingenuous saying cross promotion=give something away for free. Both mediums benefit it incentives using both instead of relying on one or the other. Cross promotion is everything from discounts to a full redemption and everything in between. But as I said earlier this will not happen DDB and WOTC are clearly against it.

the scam argument is hogwash i wish people would stop throwing that crap out on the forums. Standard WPN procedure is for promotion items to be in custody of the store not bundled with the item unless its a sealed item. This is obvious and well known to anyone in the magic community who has ever played in a single event.

Actually, DDB has pushed WotC for more cross promotion. That’s why so many folks got 1/2 discount for Theros from DDB when they got the hardcopy at participating locations. They probably cannot do it cheaper than that because they have to pay WotC for every copy, and they have to pay the transaction processing fees to the processing company, and they have to pay sales tax. And they most likely have to pay Google, Twitch, Apple, and Discord something for logins (even the free ones), and they have to pay a wackton to air condition the server room so we can use the website, and they have to pay.... etc. etc. etc.
And the only folks who pay them are us. And they make sure that we get every penny’s worth. If we buy every book piecemeal then we get credit for every penny we spend. They have to pay the credit card transaction company and the sales tax per transaction. The accounting costs have to go up because of the sheer volume of all of those little transactions too. And we still get credit for every penny we spend. And they are still pushing WotC to do more cross promotions like they did with Theros. It doesn’t sound to me like DDB is the problem in this equation.

Unless people want all of the ads to be showing up like on all of the website/games that use that model to pay their bills.
I don't think theros is a great example it was given an exclusive digital only release for months before you could buy it in print. I also think your overestimating the costs associated with DDB. At this point the process of putting a new book up is probably extremely minor since everything is already templated from prior releases. Processing fees only apply at the POS the kickback to WOTC is most likely done by bank draft. The cost associated with printing a book then shipping it to the shop is way more than the digital equivalent. Remember DDB has zero loss due to missing products ie shrinkage and shipment issues.

and like 90% of the people on the internet you underestimation an intangible object. Sure all those things might be true, but DDB has staff that get paid, ergo they need money. DDB is currently developing new features that most likely everyone will have access to = money. See?
Theros is a good example because it is the only time we have seen a code released for online discount bundled with a hard backed book. Its the first time in the what 3-4 years DDB has been live. Also just pointing out that Theros has things that WoTC implemented that now DDB is building a system for to allow us to have on our chracter sheets - something they did not have to do, but since they charge the same price for theros as every other book, guess what that looks like profit wise? So to assume that every book release is basically copy pasta is a bit asinine. Theros also didn't purposefully have a online early release. The book was meant to come out on June 2 but got delayed. However since all the online systems had been prepped to go live on June 2, WoTC let those websites do it.
Your last point - that's why the books on BBD cost 30 bucks and a hardback cost 50-60! See your argument is already in place. DDB is cheaper because it isn't affected by the same things that physicals books need!
I think before making a thread about this, search it up either via a search engine or even just searching the threads already made on D&DBeyond because I am certain this issue has already been raised.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
REMEMBER: Wizards Of The Coast does not own DDB, they are two different companies. When you buy a physical book, WotC receives the money you bought it for, not DDB and vice versa. If you want a digital key to get an online book for free because you have the hardcopy book then DDB makes no money because you don't buy off DDB you buy off WotC, so please stop making threads about this issue. DDB needs money to continue helping people and servers aren't cheap.

nah I think the frequent threads just show how many people expect some sort of reciprocity. Its good feedback for DDB to do with as they will. If it was non issue there wouldn't be dozens of threads about it.

No, that only proves how many people think they are entitled to digital access to D&D material if they purchased the hardcopy. If you buy a hardback, DDB makes $0.00. If WotC owned DDB, I could possibly understand that sense of entitlement. WotC are money hungry scum and have been since as far back as I can remember, and I remember M:tG Unlimited.
WotC does not own DDB. This website is more like an online bookstore that only sells digital D&D books. And they made all of these additional tools like the character builder for us to use for free with the materials we purchase here.
Think of the paper books as like X-Box copies of video games, and the digital books as like PlayStation versions of the same games. This website is like Amazon, and wherever you bought your books is like GameStop. If you buy an X-Box version of a game from GameStop, would you expect Amazon to give you a free PlayStation copy of the same game? Of course not.
Any purchase you make of any portion of any book will count as credit toward purchasing the full book if you choose to do so later. Goes for bundles too. If you go to a regular bookstore, rip a subclass out of a book, take it to the register and try to pay $2 for it, not only will they not count it as credit towards the rest of the book, they will insist on their full $50 right then and there. But DDB will sell you a subclass for $2, and then only charge you $28 for the rest of the book.
You don’t need a subscription to play with your friends at all. But a subscription lets you share your unlocked materials with your friends for free. And, if you and your friends each purchase one or two books from this website, and any one of you has a subscription, then you can all share each other’s stuff for free with that subscription.
Not to mention, the company that runs this website has to follow a specific contract with the company that publishes the game, Wizards of the Coast. They have no choice.
So DDB really not seem like the problem here. And they worked like heck to build this website, so they deserve to get paid too.
Sure but it comes down to how much you value DDB's interface. Is it worth buying everything all over again? To some it is and to others it isn't. Neither one is right or wrong and to say otherwise is just wrong.
And to be totally fair DDB doesn't sell anything they only lease you a license. That is an important distinction. If someone can only afford DDB or print I will always recommend print since you actually own the book. The problem with DDB is there is no telling how long you will have access to the material as well as when a new edition comes out will we get to keep the content we paid for or will be forced to buy the new edition.
I only buy on DDB. I don’t want to use paper and pencil to build and run my characters. I don’t want to use pencil and paper to run campaigns. I love having it all on DDB. I expect to have full access to all of it until I am no longer interested in using any of it. I still have all of my old books from OD&D, AD&D, 3e, and 3.5. I only ever look through them for ideas, I never really use them anymore. I haven’t bought a thing on dead trees for 5e and couldn’t be happier. Neither could my friends who all have access to my library through content sharing, and I have access to theirs, 24/7 and nobody needs to worry about loosing a book. And it cost me less than dead trees. I value DDB’s service far more than WotC’s product.
Any chance this is a thing?
Sigh
