WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Within 18 months, I am looking forward to telling players, "Sorry, I don't care that it is in the new PHB and considered canon. Your Halfing can't have a starting strength of 16, Drow Darkvision, and Tabaxi Feline Agility".
That is the endgame of this whole thing.
I won't lie, I am already fully prepared to say "if you cannot find that race in the 2e players handbook, it does not exist in my world. Thank you, and please drive through.
Actually, I cannot say that because Kobolds, Goblins, Orcs, Hobgoblins, Half-Goblins, Half-Hobgoblins, Half-Orcs, Half-Dwarves, Half-Gnomes, Half-Ogres, Rakasta, Lupins, and Tortles are all specifically playable in my world, but Tieflings are not. And Dragonborn are related to Kobolds like Hobgoblins are related to Goblins, so they’re different (lore wise) than the ones in the 5e PHB, and have a slightly buffed Breath Weapon.
I think that 1e was even more inclusive than 2e was. Didn't 1e allow half-orcs as a core race? I don't mind horcs, but all the cat/lizard/bird people crap we have going on now just enabled my inner grognard. Sadly I don't have my 1e PHB anymore, 2e is the oldest I have.
It's another reason if I ever DM again, I'll probably do it in Krynn. Krynn solves a lot of problems with races since they simply don't exist. All you have to do is figure out how to solve the Kender problem.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I think it's cool that their is going to be a built-in system to allow the people that choose to use these new rules to do so. However, I think it devalues the purpose of having unique races and it will not be allowed at my tables. None of my players want it, so we won't be using these new rules, but the new rules existing does not prevent my group from enjoying the game, because we're just going to not use them.
I do think the reasoning behind it all is pretty much nonsense, but I just don't care enough to argue the point since any opinion that doesn't agree with it just get's hated. Like I said, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game either way so I don't mind letting people get what they want.
Sorry when I was shooting guns we were either prone or supported(ie by the side of a foxhole) and rarely had to test unsupported. It also has been about 16 years since I was last at the range and at least 11 since I last held a gun. I do apologize for that. Sorry for misspeaking.
No problem.
I live in Nebraska and the local gun range does have some support but there are various target ranges where it's shoot standing without support. The owner has various setups available for beginners to experts as people learn gun-safety and proper posture. It's a fun place to hang out with friends and family.

Has an edition ever had an optional rule that was generally despised or cause significant problems in one way or another or was deeply unpopular with part of the community ever become the main or only rule?
I would like proof that a system we haven't seen yet is going to become the standard and only way listed in the rulebook, and only ways say enforced at AL and that it is the "endgame" (... of what exactly?)
Surely those type of rule changes are done during the change from one edition to next?
If that hasn't happened before, why do people fundamentally believe it's going to happen?

Army ranges only test prone and supported while in foxhole at least while I was active.

Why not just play 1e or 2e at that point?
Because THAC0.
This is Mystra's own truth right here.
I don't play 5e for the races, I play for the streamlined rules. I'd happily delete races I like such as tieflings and aasimar to kill things with fire that I dislike such as dragonborn, lizardfolk and tortles.

from the tone of his quote, he sounds like a veteran. When I was in the army we /never/ fired standing at the range. It was prone and prone supported OR from a foxhole with sandbag rests or elbows on the ground. I'd kneel or stand when shooting during an exercise, but never, ever at the range.

I play in a “home-amended” version of Mystara (from OD&D/AD&D) where Tortles, Rakasta (Tabaxi predecessors) and Lupin (The K9 versions of Rakasta) were first introduced into D&D canon. 🤷♂️ I don’t really mind those at all.
But those Tieflings better bet their cute butts back to Sigil where they belong!! And take their Genasi buddies and those “holier than thou” Aasimar with them! 😂😂

Well I am a woman but otherwise correct.
no offense intended. male or female, a former soldier is a brother. My general rule of thumb from years on the internet and gaming, is that it's always a guy until offered proof otherwise. It might be sad, but I've "farmed" a lot of gear in MMOs playing low level, female characters. it gives you an appreciation for how /creepy/ gamer dudes can be.

4th Edition. The entire edition.
Alright, I'll give you that you have a point there, but that was an entirely different edition, and I don't think it's something that will be repeated because of the controversy.
If these rules become a standard, I'd expect it to be 6e. But that'd go against quotes from WoTC about a 6e being compatible with 5e.
My main worry is that the species traits will be the next target. It's unfair that a goliath gets to be large while a goblin doesn't, or that a dragonborn can breathe fire, or an aarakocra can fly.
The minmaxers will always find a way to minmax, and then that becomes the new normal and what's expected. People will feel compelled to pick the species with the best traits and then start to want to remove all traits too.
Cultural traits really should be customisable though. It makes no sense that a dwarf brought up in an elvish society speaks only dwarfish.

I can't speak to what the military does, but in fed law enforcement (and most state and local agencies) firearms qualifications for pistols rifles and everything in between, I think maybe ten percent of the rounds are fired prone, another ten percent in some sort of kneeling or squatting position, the rest is standing up, with slight lateral movement and reloads during the targets facing. Most military veterans don't find the drills alien in the academies, so I'm guessing the current military trains with similar protocols. Military does train rifles at much greater range than most law enforcement, so supported shooting makes sense at range.
But this started, or rather it deviated, with DEX/ST and ranged weapons usage in D&D. Anyone with a significant background in athletics or weapons training can poke holes in D&D's broad ability areas and physical action (much like CHR is a mix of what people generally consider the soft skills capacity we associate with charisma as well as something that's more akin to "will" or "drive" which is more tied to how Sorcerer magic works). CON covers my ability to roll with a punch, run a marathon, and my immune system? It's convenient for a game, but not realistic. Ranged weapons, yes with both bows and firearms there are a lot of physical demands. There's the hand eye coordination behind aiming to a target. There is strength is supporting the weapon (and with bows readying the weapon). There is fine motor skill in trigger pull and manipulating the arrow. Those are basic factors when shooting in a controlled environment at a range. If they aren't in concert, you're probably not going to make a shot. In a combat or fog of war environment there's the whole target discernment coupled by the adrenaline dump. So maybe if you want to be hard core real, require a perception check to "know your target" but do you predicate that at advantage disadvantage by checking maybe CON to see if you're handling the combat stress adquately. There's room for house rules like this if you want your game to go there (and make the Phoenix Command or Friday Night Firefight of D&D, in the latter COOL was a cool stat). Most people would rather their bows go "pew pew" or "twang twang" so we get the presumption of an agile archer and it's DEX based.
I think this will be in my next world-building one-sheet document that I hand out to players. Although mine'll say 1e.
