1 Half Orc because they make the bestest war boss.
2 Goliath because they give me a built in RP reason to count kills and wrestle party members, drunk tavern goers, strangers, defeated enemies, donkeys...
3 Moon Elf because they are one of the few elves that don't have a stick up their arse.
4 Dwarf because nothing says adventure like a genetic disposition to alcoholism.
5 Human because I get stuck playing one a lot so may as well enjoy it.
Hold up why Dragonborn, I understand your opinion but I have a play in my party who's a dragonborn and he's been a lot of help
Yes, I agree that Dragonborn are above-average for the races, not below. Tiefling is about right. Wood Elf is above-average. Half-Elf, to me, is not above-average either. Half-Elf doesn't get the 4-hour meditation that Elves get and the Charisma score bonus is best utilized when an Aasimar, Dragonborn, or Tiefling jumps into a class where Charisma is a priority (for the damage resistances, since those classes are spellcasters with lower hit dice). Maybe walking through fire (or equivalent) happens more-often in the campaigns I've seen or theorized. Especially for poison resistance. Note that the only other core races with poison resistance, Dwarf and Halfling (Yuan-ti and Grung, too, though) are short (and slow) and Dragonborn are full-sized.
Update Nov 19 2017: Found new love for the Firbolg, Tabaxi, Bugbear, Goblin, and Hobgoblin though. Maybe it's fleeting. Anyone playing these?
Dragonborn definitely! I LOVE their breath weapons, and you can change the breath for different personalities. Their teeth are pretty fun too for biting! C:
Strictly PHB, I like to play Humans. I like the versatility and I cannot go wrong on RP.
Overall, as a Karsa Orlong fiend (Malazan - Book of the Fallen, a series of novels that started out as 2e AD&D and ended up using GURPS), I always play Goliath.
All sources, my current crush is on Kobolds. I don't really have an answer why but meh.
From PHB sources I think Dragonborn is the one I like the most. I feel like each color of them makes for a different flavor to play.

"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
I'm a big fan of the Eberron races. I love playing Changelings because I typically end up playing a sneaky character. I love Warforged as well, coz magically animated robot!
If those aren't available options then I look to play Elves or Dwarves.
Reason being is that they are extremely underused as anything other than enemies and can often make a campaign extremely interesting. Especially when you take into consideration that not all Gnolls are followers of Yeenoghu. Some follow Kord, Gorellik, and other pantheons. It is also said in lore that some can make great adventurers in parties, are often seen in nomadic tribes as huntsmen who trade with villages, and as wandering mercenaries. It is also possible for Gnolls to be Chaotic Good, Chaotic Neutral, or even Neutral in general. Plus they make for interesting NPC's if done right. I forgot to mention that there are Gnoll Subtypes not often used that can really spice up a setting that can make situations very unique. Witherlings - Undead Gnolls that are still sentient and even intelligent Flinds - Massive Towering Gnolls that are often leaders in most clans. Gnawers - More feral and animalistic Gnolls. Sometimes smaller than usual. Fang Fiends - Demons in Gnoll forms that are basically the overlords of the Butcher's Blood that work directly with Yeenoghu.
For mechanics I would probably have to say the variant human as the racial feat is really nice. If I'm going for flavor, then I'd probably have to say Tortle.
Reminds me of one of my favorite 'concept' characters that I'll be playing soon who is a Tortle Monk who will take the Way of the Drunken Master archetype. What's even better is that he'll act drunk even if he's not so no one is any wiser, so they just see this drunk tortle that will often times play the bagpipes at 5 in the morning and is also able to do backflips and stuff from his entertainer background as well as just being super silly. I love him as a concept, but I don't know how much I'll enjoy him as my favorite class is rogue and well... he's a monk.

I hope everyone who posted here will express their opinions on this survey too: https://goo.gl/forms/kRzPtAzzqzxG8Tzv2
Favorite: Wood Elf, because it's flavorful and effective for many things I like to do. Solid but not broken.
Most Worrisome: Half-Elf, because it's top tier in multiple classes but also good at everything else.
Least Favorite: Dragonborn or Tiefling, because Half-Elf is usually better (except for walking through fire).
Hold up why Dragonborn, I understand your opinion but I have a play in my party who's a dragonborn and he's been a lot of help
Marvarax and Sora (Dragonborn) The retired fighter and WIP scholar - Glory
Brythel(Dwarf), The dwarf with a gun - survival at sea
Jaylin(Human), Paladin of Lathander's Ancient ways - The Seven Saints (Azura Claw)
Urselles(Goblin), Cleric of Eldath- The Wizard's challenge
Viclas Tyrin(Half Elf), Student of the Elven arts- Indrafatmoko's Defiance in Phlan

Different play styles, different needs. My group is big on avoiding damage via skill checks.

Maybe Dragonborn should have a Bite racial feature, but they don't. Half-Elves are just as good at biting.
