Just buy the item you want to gift. On one of the purchase screens you have to go through, there is check box asking you whether you want to purchase it for yourself or as a gift.
Also, in case someone runs into this issue: if you want to buy someone something you already own, you would need to first change the default filter to show items you already own.
Oh man... that's a shame. I find myself in the position of wanting to gift a subscription as well. I hope that gets implemented at some point. It would be very useful to support those that have life changes happen to them or to encourage a younger player without the resources some of us have.

Looks to Admins. Surely y'all have some way of helping folks buy someone else a sub?

There are legal restrictions since an electronic compendium is a “product,” but I believe a Sub is a “service,” and there are internal tax laws that need to be abided by.
Hey, I am joining in on this thread as I have a question. What information do you need to gift someone? Do you need their physical address or email, or is just their beyond user name enough? It looks like I have to place the order before I say who I can gift to, and I am nervous I am doing it wrong.

You don't need any information about them, you just need to complete the purchase (ensuring you have checked the gift checkbox) and then give them the code.
If you accidently didn't select the gift option and finished check-out, is there anyway to change it later? This is on a pre-order, so I don't actually have anything yet.

By default, no, all orders are final. You can however try submitting a customer service ticket and see if there's a possibility they can help, but no guarantee.
Hey, how do you give a gift on DDB? I want those holiday dice. Ty

Is it possible to gift a Master Tier subscription?
I want to say thank you to our DM who is using a Basic Tier because he cannot afford it.
Not at the present time, no. Only sources can be gifted, not subscriptions yet.

Perhaps there could be a way to give your DM (or anyone, really) a DNDBeyond gift card that they might use towards whatever they like?

Keep things as simple as possible but no simpler.
