In our most recent session, my players came face to face with multiple vampire spawn. They knew that they were in there from the shopkeep so they opened all of the windows. Granted, I made a mistake and didn't remember that the sunlight in Barovia is just bright light, but not sunlight. This probably should have been a TPK. I've warned them for any future vampire encounters. Even with the 20dmg per round, the vampire spawn still did manage to kill one of the PCs. The Players opted to make a new character instead of seeking resurrection from a dark power.
This was only my 4th session as a DM, so I have A LOT to learn, but I am having a blast and both my players and I have been really enjoying using dndbeyond to facilitate our play.
I think I just ran this exact session last week. One of my players ran away and called the guards. While the cleric used turn undead to stop most of the vampire spawns leaving the room. They then burned down the shop and locked the vampire spawn inside. Part way through they realised they had left a key item inside. The rogue had to use a combination of magic, stealth and speed to get in and out in time.
I love making encounters that are more than they seem. And often, you don’t need off the wall monsters to make a memorable one. The lowly kobold, if infused with interesting personalities, can be fun, deadly, and sometimes result in some recurring npcs.
The party will come upon three kobolds fighting over the contents of a money pouch. What they don’t realize is that this is the guard for a brigade of kobolds led by a sorcerer. The encounter starts slow and ramps up as more kobolds run out of the cave, then some kobolds fly in from the trees, then heavily armored kobolds form a pincher attack. Just when the party is figuring out how to handle them, the sorcerer steps out of the cave. This could be deadly.
My party have been chasing down a Sea Hag known only as The Grey Lady who has somehow imprisoned the mentor of an Archeologist Inquisitive Rogue PC. They had a previous run in where the hag nearly died, only to be dragged away by some faithful Eels. She has since fallen back to her lair - a flooded, ruined Dwarven Citadel - to recouperate.
The PCs had the expected negotiation, and unsurprisingly they weren't keen on how she was selling the "freedom" that subservience to her would entail. The Paladin of the group did touch a nerve by commenting on her appearance, which brought her out of her corner into the centre of the room. Finally the Archeologist snapped and initiated.
The party rolled well on initiative, and were able to cause serious damage on the Hag before she could move and before the minons could arrive, so Team Grey Lady were on the back from the off. It also proved to be the perfect opportunity for the casters to show off their new third level spells with the Hag, Shallowpriest and Eel taking a fireball from the Infernal Warlock who wasn't keen on splitting their allegiences and a lightning bolt from the Storm Sorcerer in quick succession. A final Smite-Empowered Hunters Mark Critical Hit from the Paladin knocked her to the floor and left her making Death Saves.
But then the lair actions happend, the room filled with water, and the party were left in disarry. The Sorceror ended up slashing the Merrow that had snuck up behind her with a knife rather than risk the precious air that she'd have to ration out for who-knows-how-long. This gave enough time for the Hag crew to regroup and get the Grey Lady back on her feet, only for her to be knocked back down mere moments later.
As the water drained away - a fast riptide with the threat of dragging people to the ground - things are looking grim for The Grey Lady. The Shallowpriest is trying to keep her alive but it's pretty futile. Seeing its Mistress raised and downed for a third time the wounded Eel makes a grab for her and pulls her to the flooded floor below, hopefully out of reach of the party. The Archeologist gives chase but isn't able to finish the Eel off.
But it isn't neccessary. The Grey Lady bleeds out.
Seeing the being she put all her belief in fall, the Shallowpriest goes berzerk and unloads a lighning bolt, point-blank into the Archeologist leaving them looking a lot worse for wear. Meanwhile the Artificer is being swarmed by Quippers that patrolled the lower level and the Merrow is going to town on the Sorceror. Although the main enemy is defeated, it's suddenly looking quite rough for the party.
The Artificer backpeddles back upstairs, the Rogue swims out a window and scales the outer wall to the floor above, and the Paladin comes to the sorcerors aid with some well placed healing hands. The Sorceror disengages and tries to reposition, barely dodging a harpoon sent to pull her back. There's an awkward moment as she fails to realise the Rogue wants her to open the window and let her in.
After a round of repositioning the Eel and Merrow fall, leaving the Shallowpriest wedged in a narrow stairway engaged with the Artificer's Steel Defender. But the rogue missteps, and CRACK - a third level thunderwave from the Shallowpriest catches both of them and nearly KO's the Archeologist. It's a hairy round as people struggle to get a good bead round the narrow corridors, and the Shallowpriest gets left with a shread of health. It lets of another Thunderwave to try and clear it's escape, but the Defender doesn't budge.
It risks the Attack of Opportunties and turns tail downstairs again. All of them miss and the Shallowpriest disappears from view. The Rogue and Paldin jump through the open window to see if they can get a bead on it, splashing down a few feet below, but both fail to land their attacks. The underwater fighting's causing a whole load of trouble.
It looks like it might get away - the Steel Defender is just about able to keep pace, with it dashing each round for 40 foot of plodding hippo-like along the floor while the Shallowpriest is able to disengage and swim the same distance with ease. Noone else is equipped to catch it. But though all this the Warlock has disappeared up on to the roof to watch out for escapees. Smart, but he's on the wrong side of the castle. He hustles as fast as his tiny gnome legs can carry him, to just catch a glimpse of it swimming through the courtyard between the keep and gatehouse before it's out of view.
It feels like all is lost. The steel defender gets reigned in. But in one last ditch effort the Warlock jumps off the roof into the flooded courtyard, swims down to see through the tunnel under the gatehouse and BlamBlam, two well placed Eldritch Blasts do what everyone else failed to do so.
That's that over. Now they just need to deal with the fall-out from all that ruckus.
This encounter is one that has not been played (and may not be played, of course!) in my current Tyranny of Dragon’s Campaign. I trust my players not to look but I’ll post the details under a Spoiler just in case they read this by accident.
My Players have been exploring the Dragon Hatchery from Chapter 3 of HotDQ and I have placed a secret tunnel in the Troglodyte area that leads to Khundrukar, from The Yawning Portal adventure Forge of Fury. I mashed this adventure in as it fit thematically, they are a good level for it and at the end they get to fight a Dragon (which so far they have only been able to “fight off” the Blue Dragon from Greenest) and this also presents me with a valid way to reward the Players with some extra Magic Items.
The Encounter I am linking is the fight with Nightscale, a Young Black Dragon and even though the Encounter Builder is only considering this an ‘Easy’ Encounter for my players I am still really excited to run it. For one thing this will be the first time ever that I have run an encounter with a Creature in it’s Lair! Also the way that Nightscale fights by remaining mostly submerged in the lake water and maintaining distance is very sneaky and I am looking forward to see how the party will approach this challlenge.
I am currently running a Greek myth-inspired campaign where the heroes are to fight two medusae (representing the Gorgon sisters Euryale and Stheno from Greek myth). Long after Medusa herself was slain, her two immortal sisters remained in their cave on the edge of the world, surrounded by stone statues of mortals foolish enough to wander into their realm. Now, heroes seek out the life-sustaining blood of the Gorgons to revive the dead; they have been told by reliable sources that blood from the left side of the gorgons is poisonous and fatal, while blood from the right can revive even the dead. Knowing of the possibility of their turning to stone, they have taken up polished shields to reflect the image of the gorgons, but the gorgons are deadly enough even without their ability to petrify. Will the heroes prevail? One of the advantages the heroes have is that the two gorgon sisters have split up to search for the heroes. But one of the advantages of the gorgons is they know their cave terrain well.
Though the monster set up is quite simple, it's the tactics and terrain that will make this fight memorable. Can't wait to run it. :)
I am dungeon mastering a campaign with a lot of side plots and I thought it would be really cool to create a vampire cabal with one mysterious member hiring the party to start killing the others. Unfortunately my players put the story on the backburner, and by the time they came back to it they were too high in level. I thought I might have to scrap the whole thing, but I was watching a D&D Beyond interview with B. Dave Walters and he recommended just making the Vampires more powerful than the Monster Manuel stats. He also suggested switching them out for more powerful undead creatures. So I went forward with the battle but decided that I would switch one of the vampires out for a Death Knight.. My players started travelling at night in the vampire's territory trying to lure them out, so I let them think they had succeeded and "ambushed" them with a vampire, 2 vampire-spawn, and several wererats. The wererats proved useless and my players grew overconfident; then after four rounds of combat I dropped the Death Knight on them, and he threw a hellfire orb into the middle of the fight. One of my player's failed the save and he dropped (then failed his first death save), and all the monster's on the map were wiped out: except the first vampire. This vampire would have died too, but he ran over to the player who was down and took a bite, thus increasing his hit points and killing the player. Then the vampire ran away with the Death Knight in pursuit. My players had one round to get their dead friend and run away, or else the Death knight would have been in range for another AoE spell. The player was able to get their character resurrected (he's now a reborn), and now my players are on the hunt for revenge. https://www.dndbeyond.com/encounters/5af6b7f5-268a-4eb3-9dea-3fa06cc288f0
Good evening. I have played DND for a little over two years. I am attempting to become a DM. I know that this "Exciting Encounters Challenge" is for current DM's but I will still post. My goal is to run Curse of Strahd Revamped. I own the physical copy and have read through it a couple of times. I can see why it was one of the most popular campaigns'. As far as an encounter goes, I like how in chapter 4. Castle Ravenloft, has a random encounters builder. I'm sure that is common in most campaigns, however, like I said, I haven't ran as a DM before. Bare with me as I am trying to learn. I know how to be an adventurer, but trying to learn to DM seems very difficult. I appreciate your view.
An encounter I made for a level 9/10 party which can be used for any level party really, with the right DM and skills of course. It's described in the encounter summary.
I introduced my brothers to dnd and they thought they where going to a church to talk to some priests but instead found a cult leader with vampire cultists. Very interesting to see their reaction of being suddenly thrown into combat and how to navigate the play space!
The encounter I was most excited about was a big encounter in the forest, my party of 4 level 5s was accompanied by 3 more dryads to help them, and they stumbled upon a camp of 9 hostiles. Of course, my big bad of the party was a warforged spellcaster, who was planning to stay behind and pew pew his spells... But my party's bard and her Heat metal spell thought differently. The big bad was rendered useless, basically boiling alive in armor he could not take off, and the bard stayed safe enough so nobody else could reach her. Combine that with my horrible luck with dice that evening, and it was a landslide win for my party.
As I used some homebrewed enemies, I did not create that encounter on DNDBeyond, so instead have a link of one of my first encounters, a middle-of-the-night treat of zombies and lacedons.
SO I'm currently DMing a home homebrew campaign and the world is wakey and wired
eg the lore chrono is the last remain member of it race because he committed genocide to his race to become a time litch( a homebrew monster type) time litch can manipulate timeline so he put all of the error that made in a time prison . the player are resident of the time prision escape it team up with an alternative universe ( another group i play with but in a different time line to my main party) so there going to work together to fight a time litch. if the play loses the world they one kown will be in a apocalypse if they win in the time line get restored i still need to reskin some of the stat bloke and add a few more thing but over all im pritty much exsited to sea if my players can hand fighting basically the god of time
Had a dungeon for my players with a few rooms with suppression orbs (slashing/bludgeon/fire...), they barely made it out after 6 rooms and a 2 mind flayer boss encounter.
Sadly i do not have a link since this was pre dndbeyond era
This was one of the first encounters I made as a 5e DM. I wanted to use Redcaps and came up with a roadside encounter for the party, as they traveled to Phandalin. It was my first lesson in how good this party really was at combat... Redcaps didn't have a chance.
Our final challenge is UP! Good luck everyone! We'll also be drawing a Legendary Bundle winner from all submissions later today.
Any chance of doing one of these for those of us who boycott social media? I will never be able to enter anything that involves fb, insta, twit, discord, or any of those.

I meant more “an event” not just a single “challenge.” I apparently had 1 shot three days ago and I missed it, but others get multiple chances all week long…. Last event I got, like, 5 entries, others had 30, and 25 of them were to do with social media I could not even enter. I refuse to do anything on any platform owned by Zuckerberg, nor any of his completion. (As competition still promotes that soulless son of a gun’s businesses.) His companies’ policies are directly responsible for countless deaths and even more countless physical and sexual assaults all over the globe. Especially assaults targeting women, transgendered individuals, and other members of the LGBT+ community. Boycotting that is more important to me than a legendary bundle, but it would be nice to have a decent chance without having to compromise my morality.
