OOC: huh, for some reason I thought find familiar was a higher level spell. If I had seen it, I would have had a familiar this entire time. Guess I'll prepare that on the next long rest, as long as MC doesn't care about the material components?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The rest of the day passes by without incident as the party continues to make their way north through the forest. Around midday the party begins to see the tree's thin and within another hour they are standing at the edge of the forest looking on at the plains and hills ahead. Following the river the party continues to head North and West towards the Tethyamar Trail following the river. A couple hours later they stop and rest for the evening, tents are erected, a fire started, and everyone beds down for the evening. The gentle rain provides a white noise to ease the minds of the adventurers and lull them to a deep sleep...
The next morning the party awakes to a sunny morning, the air is cool but already warming as the sun rises over the eastern horizon. The ground is wet and the smell of grass and wild onion permeates the air. Camp is broken down and the party gets a move on.
OOC: Everyone benefits from a long rest. Lets find out what today will hold as far as encounters go! :-)
OOC: Was not ignoring you Fire, you don't have to memorize that spell though, you could spend an hour of your downtime doing it as a Ritual :-) (which I will allow you to have done on Day 3 of the Journey that I just posted.)
(OOC - yay encounter free day! Myth trips on a rock hits his head and does 10 points of damage - can't go one day without being knocked unconscious hehe)
(OOC and since I like to play devils advocate - it seems we've been forgetting about this rule to the game
Massive Damage (DMG: pg 273): If you take more than half your maximum hit points worth of damage in a single attack you must roll a DC 15 con save, a failure means system shock and a roll on the system shock table.
As everyone settled down for a rest, Vohana found herself a quiet spot away from the group, and began to work on a spell. She'd been so busy worrying about other things that she'd forgotten about one of her closest friends. For an hour, Vohana concentrated on the spell and giving form to this creature that had helped her and Myth so much in the past.
Vohana started by drawing a rune in the dirt using her staff, always referencing her spellbook. Once the rune was done, she pulled a small bag of sand from her pack, and put tiny piles of sand on the 6 points of the rune. Then she sat at the edge of the rune and chanted, "Tysti sai ti, Sherdai." In her mind, the figure began to take form.
Finally, at the apex of the ritual, the form began to take shape, and a snowy white owl sat on the ground before her. "Bubo, I'm so sorry! Please forgive me, my friend." The owl cooed softly and nuzzled the gnome gently. It hopped up on her shoulder, looking curiously at everyone as she rejoined the group. Vohana sat at the edge of the campfire, tired from the day and the drain from the ritual. "Keep watch," she said to Bubo, as she got comfortable. The owl flew into one of the trees, helping to keep watch during the night.
The next morning, as everyone was preparing for the day, a snowy white owl flew into the middle of their camp, then landed on Myth's shoulder. It cooed softly and nuzzled him.
Notes: I was told I needed to describe the ritual itself.
"Bubo!" Myth fishes out a bit of dried meat from his pocket and offers it to the owl "Welcome back old friend....." and he'll lean his forehead against the owls.
Bubo happily accepts the dried fish, swallowing it whole. He gives Myth another nuzzle before flying over to Vohana. "Everyone, this is Bubo. He's going to help us." She gives the owl a smile and scratches his beak, causing the owl to coo happily. Without another word, Vohana starts packing up her gear and makes her way toward the cart.
The river continues to widen and deepen as the party continues to follow it through the entire rest of the day. They finally reach the Tethyamar Trail where it crosses the river. Here there is a weather worn sign proclaiming the bridge as "Serpent's Bridge". It is a stone structure of seemingly smooth stone construction that bridges the Ashaba river about 50 feet over it's fast churning waters. The party continues north on the Tethyamar Trail for a few more hours before stopping off to the side of the road to make camp for the night.
The sunny day gave way to clear night, and the stars sparkled brightly through the dark sky like light through a dark fabric which had been pricked by the small needle of a grand seamstress. However after midnight. from the mountains to the west, clouds began to poor down from the hills like a witches brew, bringing with them lightning and loud claps of thunder. Just before the storm struck the party's campsite a loud sound can be heard from the hills, as if a bell ringing loudly and echoing in the distance.
It's all the party can do to keep the mounts from being scared off from the storm, however they manage to keep the camp in order and ultimately make it through the storm, and through the rest of the night.
OOC: Just 1 and half more days of travel until the party reaches their destination, barring any setbacks. Lets see what this next day holds! :-)
OOC: Wow, more two's in that Encounter table than in Gmoats entire rolling career here on DDB! (jk buddy). Next person to post go ahead and roll me a d10 to decide what the first one will be!
It was only Day 4 after leaving the sleepy town of Shadowdale, yet the machinations of the group were coming together. Each did their part to prepare breakfast, pack up the tents, roll away bedrolls, snuff and bury the fire, and get the mounts fed and ready for travel. Despite the mud and debris from the overnight storm, the camp was torn down and the group was on the road. It was a cloudy day, the storm clouds having lingered, and there was a breeze blowing in from the west still, and after about an hour on the road the sounds of hoofsteps on the cobblestones could be heard as a rider approached from the north.
The rider bears a shield with the mark of the Zhentarim on left arm and had a decorated scabbard with a longsword on his right hip. Behind him 4 foot soldiers marched each carrying maces and crossbows and dressed in light armor with helms. They too wear the mark of the Zhentarim.
If you are not Fire, you are breaking de rules!!! haha
What Vohana knows of the Zhentarim:
In a Nutshell (stole this): The Zhentarim is an organization of evil priests, wizards, and inhuman creatures bent on controlling all the trade and power between the Sword Coast (meaning Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep) and the Moonsea (including the intervening lands of Cormyr and Anauroch). It aims in the Moonsea area are the same as Zhentil Keep's, and the two factions work hand-in-glove, often sharing the same membership.
Specifically what applies to this campaign: The Zhentarim holds the city of Dagger Falls which is the largest settlement in Daggerdale (which is to the direct north of Shadowdale), and has since the Morn family was deposed. Randal Morn (the man you are looking for at the behest of Lhao) is the direct descendant of the last Morn to hold the city of Daggerdale, before the Zhents came in, and thus is the rightful ruler.
And of course we can't talk about the Zhents without talking about Zhentil Keep (stole this too): Zhentil Keep is a walled, independent city on the western shore of the Moonsea. It is one of the most evil cities in the Realms, a blight on the North, and a haven for Evil groups, plotting manipulators, dark religions, and foul practices. Its rulers seek to dominate the lands around it, including the Dragonspine Mountains, Yulash, Voonlar, and the neighboring Dales.
With a 20 natural, let me know if there is anything else you'd want to know :-)
"Shit," Vohana said quietly. "Nobody talk to them, don't look suspicious," she said, eyeing Guldrum up and down. "Just try to pass them peacefully. We really don't want to make enemies with these guys. They're bad news, and if we piss them off, we'll be enemies of the organization." She looks directly at Guldrum. "Stay quiet and if they stop us, let me do the talking."
Ruvenel drives the cart and whistles a tune. When the cart nears the rider, he nods a greeting and tries to move the cart past, still whistling merrily. (If there isn't enough room, he'll make way for them to pass.)
