Thinking of running this campaign, I’m a very rusty DM and this is probably best aimed at players either willing to learn with me or experienced but patient!
Ideally looking for 4 people - expectation is one post per day with allowances for festivities and COVID interruption!
Once we have some interest we can move to the next stage - thanks all
Do you have directions for us regarding character creation, what info you are looking for in a submission?
Generally GMs provide starting level, stat generation method(s), requirements for a backstory, and if there are any specifications regarding what published materials can or cannot be used.

Thank you Bounces - much appreciated - my thinking so far was more around if anyone would be interested!! But will work up some info around the advice above and update this post - thank you
The traveling extravaganza known as the Witchlight Carnival visits your world once every eight years. You have a dim memory of sneaking into the carnival as a child without paying for a ticket. That memory has grown foggy over time, though it still conjures a weird admixture of emotions—wonder and awe mixed with loss and regret. During this childhood visit, your character lost something. You tried to find it, but the carnival owners—a pair of elves named Mister Witch and Mister Light—were decidedly unhelpful.
“Silly little screeching cricket,” said Witch. “You forgot to buy a ticket.”
“The carnival goes round and round,” said Light. “The multiverse is our playground. Nothing’s free and nothing’s lost. Every visit has its cost.”
As time passed, your heart became less heavy, and you gave less and less thought to those childhood events. Now, for reasons you can’t explain, the longing to retrieve that which you have lost has resurfaced, as though an old spell has faded away, allowing you to feel the loss as sharply as if it happened yesterday.
The Witchlight Carnival has returned, and you find yourself standing near a ticket booth by the entrance at twilight, just as the carnival is about to open. There you meet others who look as troubled as you. Without knowing how or why, you sense that each of them has lost something as well. Perhaps fate has brought you together
And so the story begins …..
I’m looking for four players, wIth characters starting at Level 1. These can be from the Players Handbook or from the Witchlight Campaign book - these would be Fairies or Harengons. I would like to use the character sheets from this site for Character Creation. Please let me know if you need more information to help you decide if you want to come along for the magical ride
Have no problem with working with a new DM... Still relatively new to 5E myself and big on it being a cooperative thing so all good on that front.
Nar'Vek slaps a few coins down on the counter and lifts her chin to stare up at the person(?) working the booth. "An entrance ticket, please!" she demands.
It had been her father's flute. He had been giving her lessons on it but had always cautioned her about taking it out when he wasn't there. She had her own flute for solo practice but it's quality just didn't compare. So of course, one night, she had snuck his flute off the mantel and snuck out of the house and out into the woods to practice. There was a beautiful clearing just deep enough into the woods where the sound would never carry all the way home and snitch on her.
She woke up what must have been hours earlier. In the same clearing in the woods, seemingly undisturbed... But father's flute was gone! She had searched and searched and searched, all the time her memories fighting with her common sense - What she knew had happened surely never could have, right? Right?
When she eventually gave up and returned home, father certainly did not believe Nar'Vek's story. And not only had she never been able to find that flue again, she hadn't even been able to find that forest clearing to help her father search for it himself.
Father had always loved a good story. Stories were part of how he made a living, telling them at the local taverns and festivals and such. Stories and songs had always paid the family's way... But with the loss of the flute things got hard. And the distance between Nar'Vek and her father grew. All these years later they're basically strangers living in the same meager house. Making due but nothing much more. The love and camaraderie the two had once shared has faded to as much a ghost of a memory as did the events of the carnival.
But now? Well, the clearing is back... And it seems the carnival as well??
Background: When Trelfan was a small child he visited the Witchlight Carnival and somehow left behind the knowledge of his parentage. Something at the carnival changed him, and when he left he had no memory of his family or the special nature they had. He was raised by a family of kind humans that found him outside of the carnival crying for his mother. To this day the father swears that when he first saw Trelfan he was a girl, but that is of course impossible. Since that day Trelfan has never used his innate shapeshifting abilities, he doesn't remember that he has them.
For the past two months, a dream has come to Trelfan each night. A dark shadow looms over a small girl with violet hair. Green claws reach out from the shadows and pluck a mote of purple light from behind her ear.
To recover that which was lost, upon the altar your life will be tossed; No strife, no grief, no concern will keep you away from that which your desire burns. Come to me and find the truth, regain that which you lost in youth. It is not in me to acclaim or boast, but I promise I can be a generous host.
Every night, the dream seems more real...more like a memory. Two nights ago when the shadow hand loomed over the small girl, he willed her to lift her hand and grasp it. The hand melted into hers and she rapidly began to age into a young woman, then an adult. No...not a woman. Into him.
When he awakened the next morning a purple glow radiated around his hands, and there on his night table, a ticket to the carnival.
Pishon is a Dragonborn barbarian who has spent his life trying to figure out the world he lives in and what is around him. Gaining as much knowledge as possible is the only way to push aside the demons that haunt him. These demons will not let Pishon forget what happened to his dearest friend. They both went to the Witchlight Carnival, and it wasn’t until last year that Pishon found his dearest friend dead with a note that had a question. This question has haunted Pishon till this day and he hopes to find answers at the carnival…
I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to play a character with you and explore The Wild Beyond the Witchlight.
Garwin Twinmeadow is a half-elf Ranger. Here is a brief from his back story:
My sister and I, twins, were given to the Fey deity Fionnghuala in exchange for being our mother’s Warlock patron. We were treated very well, at least until I came of age. When it was clear that I was male I was returned to this world while my sister would continue in the Swanmays ranger ranks. I have been looking for a way to return and hope to join up with the Carnival.
I am interested! I don't have much experience, so I am very willing to learn along with you! I do have a character already made up, but I see someone here already filling that role, so I am more than happy to play any class to round out the party. I have only ever played a fighter (for 3 levels) and a paladin (for 5 levels) all in discord games that fell apart.

Nar'Vek (played by Kaemgen) - Human, female. Dark haired, with dark brown eyes and tanned skin and a very mischievous grin. There is a steely determination to Nar’Vek and a lot of charm
TrelfaTorbinflinx (Played by Bounces) Changeling, Male. Dark haired and quite a sour expression, often accompanied with a scowl. Trelfan like Nar’Vek is very good at getting what he wants from any given situation
Pishon (played by Camreenchare) Dragonborn, male. A haunted soul there always seems to be something troubling Pishon something he seems often preoccupied with yet unable to grasp
Usagi (played by MSN 2012) Herengon, male. A slightly larger than average Herengon, but then there is nothing average about Usagi. With quick reactions and being fleet of foot Usagi keeps everyone on their toes
Garson Twinmeadow (played by GR_Mustang) Half Elf Male. Explorer and in many ways a survivor Garson is an accurate shot with arrows and is very capable of marking a creature and ensuring its end is both swift and painful
• Make any rolls for skills, attack / damage, etc. in their own line. Use the dice roller! Example: Attack: 8 Damage: 8 slashing. Example: Stealth: 23 Link to dice roller: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/2985-rolling-dice (The dice roller is quite sophisticated, but all you really need is in the little die icon in your post toolbar. Number of dice, die type, bonus, advantage/disadvantage.)
• OOC (out of character) text is typically in the last line, in parentheses.
The above seems to make sense to me - but see what you all feel - I’ve not yet used the dice roller myself so something to figure out next 🤞
Feel free to take this time to engage in some role play amongst yourselves. Now would be a great time to introduce yourselves! We won't move the adventure along significantly until tomorrow - Monday - at the earliest.

A man stands some 20' from the entrance surveying his surroundings and the others also standing nearby, strangely huddled together while standing apart. Well this is a terrible idea. Why did I even come out here? Because a voice in a dream somehow made a ticket appear on my bedside? Next I'll be sticking my hand into a dark hole and being surprised when I pull back missing fingers. A vision of the small girl with violet hair flashes through his mind. She cries for her mother but also has a look of confusion on her face, almost as if she is not sure who is associated with that title.
He turns to address the group of gathered strangers gruffly. "I don't suppose any of you sent me this ticket and care to explain? Is a campaign going to be formed to join with out characters? Not essential but would allow us all to peak at each others sheets easier, and allow DM to make adjustments if necessary.
As for formatting... If anyone is particularly picky about it, I can drop out now. But honestly, much if not most of my posting comes while wasting time at work, which means I will be done it from my phone, which means all the formatting is a royal pain in the butt. Background: When Trelfan was a small child he visited the Witchlight Carnival and somehow left behind the knowledge of his parentage. I am a newer player, so I am very patient and willing to work with everyone
All else being equal I would play a herengon paladin or wizard. However, I’m happy to play any class to round out a party.
Happy to have a new DM. I run a game and would like to be a player, but happy to provide advice as needed. I’m very patient.

Suggested layout for posting in this thread:
• Character name in the first line, bolded.
• Actions and speech in subsequent lines. Use bold and quotation marks " " for speech, italics for thoughts. Choose a unique color for your dialogue.
• Use tooltips when helpful, like darkvision or Magic Missile or Stealth or trident. (See https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/general-discussion/11983-how-to-add-tooltips ).
Examples as follows
To create tooltips, use the appropriate [tag][/tag] around the desired subject.
Example: [ magicitem]sunblade[/ magicitem] (Without spaces within the [ ] brackets.)
Use the following within the [ ][/ ] bracket system:
action - an action taken in combat - e.g. dodge, search and ready
condition - a condition afflicted upon a creature - e.g. restrained, poisoned and prone
item - a mundane item - e.g. torch, trident and backpack
magicItem - a magical item - e.g. Bag of Holding, Dust of Disappearance and Demon Armor
monster - a creature you can encounter - e.g. Banshee, Bandit and Unicorn
sense - a type of extra sense, whether magical or natural - e.g. darkvision, tremorsense and truesight
skill - this is used for professions - e.g. Persuasion, Stealth
spell - a magical spell - e.g. Mage Hand, Magic Missile and Abi-Dalzim’s Horrid Wilting
wprop - a property of a weapon - e.g. finesse, versatile and heavy
• Make any rolls for skills, attack / damage, etc. in their own line. Use the dice roller!
Example: Attack: 8 Damage: 8 slashing.
Example: Stealth: 23
Link to dice roller: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/2985-rolling-dice
(The dice roller is quite sophisticated, but all you really need is in the little die icon in your post toolbar. Number of dice, die type, bonus, advantage/disadvantage.)
