I am looking for four to six heroes to embark on series of adventures. We'll start with the Sunless Citadel and then proceed through the other adventures in the book Tales of the Yawning Portal as well as some homebrew adventures. Between each adventure we'll have some downtime in various cities and towns as well to give your characters a chance to grow. I'd really like to put together a good group that's going to hang around for a while.
We will be playing on Discord (text only) making use of the Avrae bot. This will be my first time DMing with Avrae so don't feel bad if you don't know the commands. We can learn them together. Discord also make it really easy to post multiple times a day which I tend to do (though weekends can be iffy). I'd like a group that can keep up.
I encourage a wide mix of creative roleplaying and descriptive narrative, with dialog, inner thoughts and expressive, detailed accounts of what your character does and thinks, whether in battle or interacting with other characters and NPCs.
If you want to play, provide the following:
Your timezone: Name: Race: Class: Background: Backstory:
And, so that you know what you're getting into, here's my default table rules. Once we have a party, the group can opt to modify these.
Goals!
Fun for everyone If an official rule or a House Rule makes the game less fun, let's toss it.
Faster play Some of the rules (hopefully) speed up play, so players spend less "not my turn" time.
Highlight the players Some rules are intended to give players more say in how table play works
Support the drama Some rules are intended to heighten the dramatic quality of D&D. D&D is mutual storytelling, after all.
The Game
Please try to avoid meta gaming. Think, "What would my character do?"
Be Engaged Multiple posts per day shouldn't be that difficult since we're on Discord.
Handling missing players If someone is silent and their character is not actively needed, we'll ignore their absence and assume their character is just quietly tagging along with the group. If the character is needed, DM will bot the character and do his best to be true to the character's motivations and personality.
12 Hour Max per Turn of Combat Sometimes people can't get online to say what their character will do. If we're near the 12 hour mark of waiting for someone to take their turn, the DM will bot the character as best as he can. (honestly don't even know if I can do this with Avare)
Inter-Party Theft No stealing from other PCs unless there is a very good (preferably story driven) reason for it.
Crafting The crafting rules suck. If anyone wants to do some serious crafting in their downtime we'll work out easier/better rules.
This does not mean every shop will have the exact magic item you want.
Character Sheet
Stats Point Options I love giving players a lot of options here so that they can craft their character the way they envision them. Here’s your choices:
Standard array
Point buy
Roll 4d6 drop the lowest, reroll the 1's. Do this six times. If the grand total is less than 72, you can choose to go with one of the other options instead (must roll here in the forums or using avrae bot in discord so that we can all see the results)
Races Anything in the official books
Alignments No evil characters without DM approval which will require a good backstory along with an explanation on why your evil character won't screw over the party.
Leveling We will be using milestone.
Leveling and Hit dice When leveling up roll your hit die and take the higher of your roll or the average for that die. My fights can be rough, you’ll want those hit points.
Smart Characters Know More Extra tool proficiencies or languages equal to your intelligence modifier (e.g. Int of 13 = +1 so you get one extra tool proficiency or language)
3 Events Once you have your character created, provide the DM with three events you wish to happen to your character at some point while adventuring. Perhaps you wish to find a lost loved one, or an ancient treasure, or to attend a concert and hear a famous Assimer sing.
Plot points Everyone gets one plot point per level. You can spend a plot point for things such as "remembering" that you purchased an item in the last town, knowing the exact right person to go to for help who just happens to live nearby, learning the goblin in front of you is a childhood friend that was cursed by an evil mage, etc. Spending of plot points must be discussed with and approved by the DM. The bigger the change the better the story has to be. Plot points can not be used in place of Inspiration. You can only have a max of 3 plot points saved up.
Intimidation Checks have the option to use a stat other than charisma as long as it fits the character doing it and makes sense. For example, a rogue could using DEX to display some fancy knife work or a barbarian could use STR to straighten a horseshoe.
Limit of two people for each skill check. No need for every member of the party to roll perception every time you walk into a new room.
Help actions require proficiency in the skill or the base attribute listed as a saving throw for your class
Stealth Rolls are acknowledged but you won't be told if it "passes"
Combat
Crit On Initiative Rolling natural 20 on initiative gets you advantage on your first attack in combat.
Nat 1 = Fumble DM will come up with something fitting of the situation. You hit your party member, you drop you weapon, you slip and fall, etc.
Consumables Drinking a healing potion (or other consumable item) is a bonus action, handing it off to another player is a bonus action, but feeding it to another character is an action.
Flanking rules are in effect so you do get advantage on attack... and so do the monsters
Drawing weapons You can draw your weapon without using an action. You can drop a weapon to draw another weapon without using an action. However, you cannot sheath one weapon and draw another weapon unless you use an action. Thus you could drop your crossbow to draw your sword as an enemy rushes you but not sheath it.
Laughing Auto-hit If you cast a spell such as vicious mockery and your insult makes the DM laugh, the NPC doesn't get a saving throw.

Planned Roguish Archetype: Arcane Trickster Background: Custom - noble runaway daughter turned criminal. Kicked out of Zhentarim in Waterdeep. See backstory. Backstory: Link to long version (google doc) TL:DR for Backstory: Grew up in noble sun elf family with overachieving warrior older brother and younger bard sister, while her own penchant for stealth and ruthlessness went underappreciated. Viewed somewhat unfairly as a sociopath. Ran away from home and became Zhentarim Fang in Waterdeep. Ironically kicked out of the Zhentarim eventually for being too ruthless, and also for taking revenge against someone that owed the Black Network a debt. One that she had been tasked with collecting, and yet who she also wrongly believed to be a murderer. Asked never to return to Waterdeep, though that won't stop Nivi. I really hope you have a chance to read the full backstory above if you have time - this is a Forgotten Realms world character I've been planning for a while.

Shaxus led a life of cons and lies. His many... MANY... poor life choices landed him in prison. For you see, Shaxus had the brilliant idea to con a noble mans daughter. His plan, as you can imagine, was to woo the young lady and convince her to marry him. After which he would take the dowry and leave. The plan was working perfectly. That is, until Shaxus did the one thing a con artist should not do in this situation. He fell in love with her. She was a human, and still looked at him with love and affection. Something Shaxus was certainly not used to. Her name was Larissa and she was kind and beautiful. It was this kindness that led to her death.
Her father had never trusted Shaxus, so naturally, when Larissa was found dead, murdered, he immediately pinned the blame on Shaxus. It didn't help anything that the dowry, along with many other items of high value, also went missing. There was no trial, no hearing of words, no anything. Still in my sleepwear, they threw me into the dungeons and threw away the key. What else could you expect? He was a noble, and I... well, I am demonborn.
For years Shaxus rotted away in prison. He saw others come and go, some released, others executed. Shaxus stayed. Shaxus always stayed. One night, while Shaxus contemplated taking his own life, not for the first time, he heard a voice. It was not a natural voice, nor was it friendly. It was a harsh whisper, grating and raspy. Shaxus assumed his mind had left him and finally made the decision to end it. Only, he didn't die. He couldn't die. The voice laughed at his efforts.
"What do you want!?" Shaxus cried out.
"Revenge!" The voice rasped back. "Revenge for who killed our Larissa!"
Shaxus froze. "Our Larissa?" he thought.
"What do you mean?" He asked hesitantly.
The voice chuckled menacingly. "We can find them. We can make them pay."
"Find who?"
"Her killer." the voice whispered.
"How?" His voice was barely more than a whisper.
"I will help you, and you will help me...." The voice seemed fainter, as if it were leaving.
"Wait! Help me!" He cried desperately. "I'll do anything!"
I'll do anything. The words that sealed his fate. Shaxus felt an energy enter him. Something dark and hateful. Something he knew should not exist on this plane. But he didn't care. He only cared for his revenge. The cell doors opened of their own accord and he fled through them.
Shaxus fled far and created a new identity for himself. He occasionally pulled a con here or there, just to keep enough coin in his pocket to continue searching for his beloved killers. Occasionally his patron would ask a task of him, which he did without question as his patron continued to aide him.
And so, this is the life of Shaxus up until now. Will you allow me to continue his story alongside you?

She would love looking at what people bought in and soon was learning the family trade. Wherever she goes she is often humming or singing some unknown tune. She would often doodle music she had heard on napkins and sometimes her own clothes. People would stare at times since light seem to pour out of Felspar's eye. She did everything to hide it from wearing cowls and large hats. One night she heard her parents arguing in low hushed tones. They had feel into debt and soon after there there was a break in, but nothing was stolen. Who broke in destroyed everything. She felt helpless and was overcome with tears, which she angrily wiped away. Tovus her neighbor seems to always have coins to spend, maybe she could ask her for help.
Felspar hesitated for a moment before asking Tovus for help. As she entered Tovus's home she blurted out that she was desperate and wanted to help her family. Tovus drew her close and stated that if she wants coins to pay off her families debt then she had to work for her. She then described her criminal errands she need run. Felspar paled at the idea, but she swallowed her fear and accepted. Tovus was harsh master and there were many a night Felspar collapsed due to exhaustion. As time went on the errands became more dangerous. Tovus tasked her one night to steal a fractured jewel from a wealthy merchant and if she completed this task, she would give her enough coins to pay off her family's debt. Felspar was able to maker her way to the jewel, but getting out of the mansion again would be rather difficult due to other intruders that alerted the guards. She was able to almost get over the wall when a whistling arrow firmly plunges into her arm and a second soon followed in her back. Felspar stumbled back to the hideout. Tovus barely gave her a look as she took the jewel and threw a pouch of coins at Felspar. She was promptly thrown out. It seems she is no longer useful to Tovus.
Once home she gave her Father the coins. He refused saying ill gotten coins will rot the soul. Felspar was outraged at her Father and would have said more if she did not collapse from the loss of blood. When she awoke she heard the creaking of a wagon and smelled the moldy hay beneath her. She bolted upright and asked to driver where is she and where is her parents. A grizzled man tossed her a package. Inside was note from her parents saying that they will be fine and are sending her away to friend they know. They said they loved her and wanted her to have a better life of her own. After a few fumbling starts Felspar slowly found her own song again. After she thanks Thib and left on her journey to see new lands and people. Traveling also takes coin so from time to time she lends her services to escort caravans or play a few songs in taverns.

Your timezone: Eastern Name: Miesha Race: Human (variant - Polearm Master) Class: Fighter (Champion planned) Background: Folk Hero Backstory:
Miesha was always too big a fish for the small fishing village she was born in. Too strong, too smart and too skilled, she quickly gained all the fame and acclaim one could in such a place and had no room to grow. This led her to turn to drink and other vices in order to keep her mind off the utter boredom of her life. Sure she was called upon on occasion when there was some incursion, or some 'hero' from some other town in the region thought they could come and take on the 'legendary girl' but they were soon dispatched and sent home with a few scars to remember her by.
"She needs to leave," her friend Gorm said to some others. "If she stays here she'll lose herself totally to the drink. She needs to seek grander things..." Funds were scrounged, some parting gifts bought and eventually Miesha was pointed towards Waterdeep and her destiny...
(Ok, a kind of bland backstory, actually... But I would kind of plan Miesha to be a bit bland to begin with. A kind of no-nonsense warrior who takes care of business and then gets back to her drinking and such. Hopefully once exposed to things that actually challenge her she will have her personality exposed as well - Looking to let the story that unwinds to form her into what she is.)

Will add details below once I have stats...
Your timezone: Eastern
Name: Miesha
Race: Human (variant - Polearm Master)
Class: Fighter (Champion planned)
Background: Folk Hero
Backstory:

We're doing one small murder-y thing for a bigger, better reason. The ends justify the means.

We have our group. Big thank you to everyone who applied. I've reached out to the first six. If any have changed their minds I'll reach out to more.
