Shadowheart wasn't happy. His companion, Stoney had insisted in taking a shortcut throught the woods.
"I am a gnome! I know my way through the woods!" he said. Now they were lost and not sure how to come back to the road or how far are they from their intended destination, the small town of Darkshelf. They decided to go somehow downhill instead of roaming without direction. They had been struggling all day to advance across a terrain full of ferns and trees. When the night fell, they had reached a river. It is not too big, probably a subsidiary of the Pelyra river At least, following the river, they should reach the Pelyra and then be able to reach Darkshelf. But for that long day they decied it was enough and made camp at the river's shore. The fire cracks as they rest while sharing a trout the had captured for dinner.
Meanwhile Phodoxia and Grrzark had been using the woods to hide for the last three days.Msifortune seemed to have befallen on the pair goblins. Six days ago Grrzark almost fell while they were crossing a ridge and he lost his backpack, with their rations on it. Therefore, when three days later they found a small caravan in a little traveled trail, they thought it was a good idea to approach it and ask for some food, but the men who were guiding it turned to them, armed with longswords and whips and tried to capture them. Being attacked in sight, before they could even explain themselves, to that they are used to, but this rought looking men were different, they tried to capture them. They never had a chance to see what they were carrying on that two covered and closed carriages, but Grrzark could swear that he had hear some moaning and crying inside. The men were more relentless that they previously thought, and some of them kept pursuing the two goblins, even when they were far away from their caravan. They finally lost them on the second day, but escaping from them had left them little time to look for food. With only a few berries on their bellyes they are hidden in the shadows trying to decide to approach the light they see among the trees, near the river, or stay hidden.
Shadowheart pulled bits of bramble and branch from his cloak, hood and backpack. He inspected them - nothing damaged, good. He wasn't fond of camping. Nothing against nature, he just preferred walls. They were safer. More reassuring. He looked at Stoney, watching the gnome eat the fish. It was too early to tell what their intentions were. This trek - getting lost - was it their plan? Is this where the gnome betrays and stabs him? Probably not, but he learned the hard way - the harsh way - that one cannot be too careful. Trust can get you killed.
After finishing his own fish, he pulls up his mask and neared the fire, watching the flames. His arms resting on his knees. He tilts his head, casually gestures a hand as a brief purple spark and and quick twirl of black smoky wisps escape his fingers as he mutters, "Ignem rego." The fire suddenly changes colour to a deep purple and at the top some flames become blue and dance in a loose form of butterflies.
He leans back, watching those butterflies dance in the fire. His mind barrelling into memories from before. Before when he watched children dance and play in a cloud of blue and purple and green butterflies he had conjured. Before his 'Mr Edgelord' persona became his real self. Before ...
While waiting for the trout to cook, Stoney Tark nods off. He jerks awake when Shadowheart was magically playing with the fire.
"Gahh... I had this nasty dream. I was in a cave with a bunch of other troubleshooters. I turned my head for a moment, and they went running down different passages, scattering out of sight. Then there was screaming as they were attacked by monsters... then I woke up.
"Hopefully not a prophetic dream, right? Guessing my subconscious wasn't happy about this defective map that took us down the wrong road."
(Even at a glance, Shadowheart notices that Tark is looking at the wrong part of the map for their current location.)

"It might be a trap," Phodoxia mumbles to Grrzark, as she peers through the darkness of the tree branches towards the flickering light of a campfire on the river. "They might still be looking for us. Who would have thought anyone would make such trouble to chase us through the woods for two days straight? It's very bothersome."
She doesn't mention what it reminds her of, unpleasant memories of being chased through a deeper, wilder forest, and knowing quite sure that when she was caught, she was going to be killed. At least this time it hadn't been elves.. and fairies... and all other manner of terrible creatures... but, if she were honest with herself, which she might be but rarely, it was still pretty frightening. Those folk had wanted something malicious, and they were hellbent on getting it. It made Phodoxia none too keen to approach any strange fire and ask for handouts. Not at least without a good look at who the strangers were.
Grrzarknods. "We'll wait until they are asleep. See if they might have graciously left any gifts out for us. Just keep quiet. A little longer and we might have some fish bones to chew on."

Phodoxia nods in agreement with Grrzark's plan, and settles down to wait, watching the fire and the two figures huddled around it. At least it's not a whole bunch of them. We might even be able to fight them off, if we need to.
The loud snap of a twig to one side of her makes her startle, and hiss in frustration as the two figures at the fire turn to look in their direction. Grrzark! First you slip your foot and lose our food, and now...! With a sigh, she whispers to him, "Now they've heard us! Quick, let's move... but look, if they figure out we're here, maybe I can convince them to give us some food and not try to kill us. Let's not look suspicious, okay? There's only two of them. It's not so dangerous as a whole caravan. No, wait, I've got an idea. Let's save them from the hungry beast attacking their fire."
Phodoxia slips closer through the shadows. On the other side of the fire from her, just behind the two figures, the predatory growl of a lion reverberates from the undergrowth.

The fire sprouts, scorching the ferns near the campment.
When Tark turns to talk with Shadowheart about the resistance to fire of the deers, he clearly sees the shilouette of a goblin trying to sneak into the camp. The goblin has no weapons drawn and seems to be replying to someone in the shadows that Tark cannot see.
When the fire blooms across the way, Grrzark whispers, "Dox, I don't think they're friendly. They just tried to roast us." Nonetheless he follows a little behind her, his hands hovering near his axe.
Shadowheart looks to where Tark had cast the fire and with a shrug mutters, "Somnus." He outstretches his right hand, a slight glint on his arcane focus ring, as dim light briefly washes out to the same spot and expand outward, as dark magical energy tries to drag everything around it into Sleep.
Despite having their attention drawn to the other group of individuals that are in the forest, ones trying to reach them and the other ones trying to hunt a growling deer using magic, they all hear a heavy thud coming from the river.
There is a small row boat that has come downstream, apparently unmmaned. But the pair of goblins, being near it, are able to see that inside the boat lays an unconsciuos man, his right arm falls over the side, touching the water as if he was rowing with it before sucumbing to his wounds. For the blood coming from his left shoulder and back are obvious even at that distance.

Phodoxia gulps after she's gotten a good look at the boat drifting down the river towards them. "Something nearly killed that man in the boat. We shouldn't be so close to this river. There's probably eels in it..." She feels an urgent tingling in her hands, moving up her wrists. Oh, no, not now. He's going to die before I could get to him anyway! She stands rooted to the spot for a moment, torn in two about what to do. This is more than Grrzark and I can handle. It just gets weirder and weirder out here.
Then, she suddenly seems to make a decision, and turns and runs from the river towards the two setting fires in the underbrush. A human, and a gnome. "Help, help!" she shouts out. "There's a man nearly dead in the boat! I think eels got him!" Maybe, she hopes, they won't look too closely at the goblins in the shadows, and will be more worried about the boat.
"Eels," thinks Grrzark, "those are good eating!" He also runs toward the camp, hoping to snag a net or fishing pole while the others are occupied with whatever nonsense Doxis dreaming up.
