You recall some basic history from when you lived here when you were younger, and piece together that the pictures most likely depict the history of Goldenburg.
The first set of pictures shows a great being with one eye open, and the world shaking.
The next shows a Great War, with meteors striking the ground, and many dead or wounded.
The third depicts the dwarves coming out from underground and discovering the caves unearthed by the war.
The fourth illustrates the dwarves working for many days to mine into the caves, and carve a city from the stone.
The fifth shows travelers arriving, and the bud of a civilization above the dwarves city beginning to form.
The final picture depicts modern day Goldenburg, with the massive above ground city, and then the dwarven city and underground farms below.
Klif then goes up to the man working at the desk and states “I’m an adventurer looking into these disappearances. Is there somewhere I should start with?”
He looks up at you in your armor, with your sword strapped on your hip, and the look of fierce determination on your face. He opens a drawer in the desk and pulls out a brass key the size of your head. He gestures towards the large brass door behind him before handing you the key.
”If you’re one of those adventuring people, you’re going to want to proceed to the adventuring department.”
He then returns to consulting his documents and crossing things off his list, doing very well at ignoring you again.
The door yawns awake slowly. It opens fully to reveal a half circle shaped table, with 4 creatures arguing around it.
”Yes, but it would be safer to recruit Derrick strongarm to protect the caravan to the Guild, not rick muddle!” Shouts a blue Dragonborn.
“Yes, but if we get on the muddle families good side, we hold more sway over the community as a whole!” Yells a dark skinned elf.
A stocky looking halfling adds, “Derrick strongarm is still a much better choice! Yes, the muddles have more money, but the strongarm family has a far longer history of being excellent fighters. If something were to happen, we would want them more than the lazy group of muddles! This is guild supplies we’re talking about!”
A gold Dragonborn sits at the head of the assembly, calmly listening to everyone’s view. Finally, he speaks in a calm, but demanding voice that quiets the room. “Everyone. Please, settle down. We have a guest.”
Everyone immediately stops paying attention to the argument at hand, and four pairs of eyes turn to you.
“Well?” the gold Dragonborn says. “What have you come here to say? The keeper wouldn’t have let you have the key unless it was for a purpose.”
He looks at you for a moment, and squints his eyes. Then….
”HAHAHAHAHA! You!” he says , wheezing and wiping tears from his eyes. “We’ve has sorcerers who can conjure an ocean, fighters who single handedly slew entire armies of orcs, and clerics of galactix itself! And they’ve all gone missing! What thinks you are more special than them? You don’t even have anyone else with you! HAHAHAHAHAHA!” He wipes more tears from his eyes.
The halfling looks more like he believes in you. “How about this? We’ll tell you what we know, and if by some miracle you survive, we’ll double the reward. Come back with anyone taken that might still be alive, and we’ll multiply the reward by five.
Ignoring the roaring laughter of the rest of the assembly, he looks at you after pulling some papers out from his stack before him and answers you.
“As you probably know if you’re here, there have been disappearances each night, 193 so far. Each of them has been a hard working man, but you should know, that they were all men. There have been no discernible care for race, just that they are a working man. What you may not know is that each man is married. More so, each man has two children, and each man worked in the deep mines, where the rarer minerals are found. If you would like to see them, there is a vault where we keep each doll found where a man has disappeared. The keeper can show you the vault if you have any interest. The rest of the council has not paid much heed to this, but I find this deeply disturbing, as one of my sons works in the deep mines, and he is married, with a pair of twins as children. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated deeply from the bottom of my heart.”
After saying this he turns to the other council members of the board of adventure and safety. “I’ve sent him away!” he yells over the laughter, “we shouldn’t be seeing him again after the scolding I gave him on his weakness!” You guess he says this to keep his public persona the council knows alive.
Klif pretends to look ashamed and leaves the room. He then walks over to the keeper and says, “I’ve heard there is a vault somewhere around here which stores the dolls found after people went missing, may I see it?
He sighs, looks up at you, and rolls his eyes as if to say, not this guy again.
”Give me a moment please, sir.”
He finishes looking over papers, and crosses off, attended to 20 adventurers doom by 11 o’clock.
”Follow me.”
He stands up, and you are shocked by his height. It seems almost as if he were hiding an entire other body underneath the desk! He walks slowly to the silver door behind him. You think something if off about the door, but can’t think what it may be. He bends over to insert the key into the lock and turns. Behind the beautiful door is a nightmarish landscape you never would have expected. And it’s not even the doll room, you notice with confusion. A swirling purple portal lies in the center of the room, which has blue-green vines growing from the ceiling, and cracked, red trees surrounding the portal.
The keeper smiles ominously. “Through that portal is the doll room,” he says with a smirk. “I’ll wait right here for you…”
As you think what you should do, you can’t help but remember the tabaxi, who must still be rummaging through his supplies outside, or gave up and left.
Ruby heads into town, checking out the market and vibrancy that is there. She feeds off of it, enjoying the liveliness, though has trouble keeping her hands to herself. Old habits die hard, and she was a real good pickpocket. No, she thinks to herself, she has changed her ways and is now an adventurer. She needs to stick with it!
The dwarf finally finds her way to the town hall and heads to the dwarf and human that are guarding it. "Hello there! It's a fine day today!"
The human replies excitedly, seeming to have been bored without conversation.
”Indeed it is! He replies. Market days are always nice and cheerful!” He then seems to realize that he is doing his job right now, and asks you, “are you here to enter the building? If so, please bring forth proof that you can be of use to us. But… if you aren’t here to enter the building, a little conversation would be nice.”
"I am! I have heard the call for help and the horror stories of what is going on and I'm here to lend a hand. I have saved my clan from an underwater creature that messed with your head, I know I can help here!" as she says this, she realizes he asks for proof, "proof? How does one prove they are an adventurer?" She draws out her rapiers, flicks them about proficiently and sheaths them again. Then looks at him quizzically.
Harron enters, having heard of the disappearances and troubles befalling the people. He approaches the town hall. "I am Harron Lutgehr, Paladin and defender of the light. I have come to assist these people where and when I can. I request to speak to your leaders."
Your silent approach startles the guard holding the door open, and it slams shut in the face of a female dwarf standing there. The human guard apologizes profusely, and hauls the door open again, more slowly than before. He then turns to you and asks, “are you with her?” gesturing toward the dwarf. “Because if you are, I may as well just allow both of you entry, rather than ask you for proof of your adventuring prowess.”

The young guard seems impressed, and more than a little shocked at the fantastic display of bladework.
“Well, I can’t say I’ve seen anyone but an adventurer display knowledge of that kind of blade skill! Please, come on in!”
He hauls open the door with a grunt of effort. He nods to you, and waves his hand to the interior of the building.
