(Has Angus noted anything unusual in the way the city guards regard him? Do they seem more hostile than one would expect? Fearful? Grovelling?
Also, is the underground space where he portalled in closer and/or more hidden and accessible than the Library?)
Insight 23
The guards assume Angus is a Bastard Bull and as such their boss has instructed them to leave him alone. He is literally above the law, but that doesn't mean he can act with impunity. There are many forces at work in the city of contracts, a delicate web of checks and balances. 4D chess, if you like.
I think the guards' general sentiment of Angus would be that he is "somebody else's problem"
The shared basement of a number of small businesses is accessible through any of those businesses. They all have occupants. The library is literally on the same street, so the relative distance is about equal.
Edit: the Thayvian embassy is across the street from the library.
"I'm staying at the Embassy and the Library is basically right next door. Either will do, let's move!"
Chadderlay will lead the group down the next street, North or South, whichever leads directly to the Library. If the first armed unit to appear seems to notice them then Chadderlay will attempt to wave them off.
(How far away is the first armed unit when he appears? Does he notice us ducking down the North or South street?)
The others would not be allowed entry into either of those buildings, which is not to say that they cannot gain access, or even admittance, but it will not be granted freely. They'd have to be Cloaks or Red Wizards, or somehow otherwise tolerated arcanists to get ino the library, and at the least either citizens of Thay or having official business with Thay, or some unofficial business with a particular high-ranking person to be allowed in the embassy. Chadderly's rank is not high enough to get uncredentialed outsiders in on his word alone, but it is definitely not impossible to enter.
"Not at all, Sir. Learning about world serpent is not our primary intention. I'd say that we're just a group of adventurers looking for an adventure. We've managed to teleport here from Oerth, it's located in the Greyspace."Gravity explains everything while following the red cloaked male without giving it a second thought. She has picked up a shield from the cluster of weapons and armors and claimed it for herself.
As Gravity picks up the shield, a voice comes from within a shop nearby "Hey, youbhavent paid for that. Seeing through the shop's window, from behind the shelf she cowers behind, Sam and Chadderly looking in her direction, their attention drawn by the sound, the voice falls silent.
Tetrevess says cautiously..”well, we stepped through a planar gate opened by Heward to arrive here, and I believe we moved far both in time and space. I’m a scholar and traveler. I’d welcome some company that can help keep these two out of trouble. I’ve been warned that the use of Magic is illegal here except by members of the Red Wizards- is this the case, and if so- can I join?”.. “.
The Red Wizards are Thay-born historically, but the local Red Wizards are a separatist group, whose leader has named a new school, Artifice, with the title of Zulkir given to a secret, unnamed Lantan artificer, so the exclusion is far from absolute. Still, the city's rulers, The Blades, would insist that Tetrevess pay his debt for trespassing without writ or emolument. The Thayans could push back and might dissuade the Blades, but at a cost. This would be a difficult course to pursue.
Becoming a member of the Brotherhood of Cloaks, by contrast, is actually pretty easy. If you're interested in the brotherhood, let me know and I can give you more details - that goes for anyone capable of casting any arcane spells as outlined above (i.e. not through racial ability, only those from certain classes/subclasses.)
Angus will follow Chadderlay looking for taverns or inns of the "no-questions-asked" variety.
Hold for Sam's roll.
Let me give some details on inns:
The Leaning Boot across town, other side of the harbor.
The Leaning Boot is a tavern in the cellar of a dockside tallhouse. For decades it has been marked only by an single old boot, nailed to a post at the top of the steps at street level. The interior is dimly lit and tends to be quiet, making the subterranean bar a favorite of the few dwarves in Mulmaster, older locals, and a handful of dedicated alcoholics. The Leaning Boot is the only place in Mulmaster proper that serves half-orcs. The cellars are damp, making corked bottles swell and burst open over time. As a result, only ale, beer, and other vat fermented beverages are served. Loud and merry drinking songs are forbidden by the owners, as if any stroke of happiness would disturb the sorrow of this place. Only Dwarven hum-songs are tolerated
If Angus told you he was a knight if Myth Drannor, you m8ght have some feelings about that, given their strong connection to Watereep:
Red Wizards are taught that Aglarond, Rashemen, and Mulhorand all want the Red Wizards gone so they can conquer Thay, and that distant financial rivals like Baldur’s Gate, Sembia, Waterdeep, and the Zhentarim all want to slyly dominate or come to own Thayan assets, and thus are constantly seeking to blackmail Thayans into acting for them.
"My coat...?" Angus looks down at the orange garment he is sporting. "Why that little... *sigh*.... the tailor I purchased it from must have recognized me as a foreigner and decided to get me into trouble. Hmm... well it could come in handy I suppose, in the right circumstances. Thank you for the warning, I suppose I'll just go by Angus for now.
I assure you, Chadderlay, I am not here to foment revolt or harm this city in any way. Your aunt brought me here because we need to... acquire... a certain item to defeat a common foe."
You make your way quickly down the street. In the distance, you see the Wave n' Wink. Outside, members of the soldiery stop patrons as they exit and passersby. All reach inside a pocket or purse for their papers and show them before being allowed to pass. You decide to take side streets as you pass through town. Here amid the beautifully decorated walls of the city center, which hide the mansions of the wealthy nobility, you meet a pack of 5 well dressed men, with embroidery on their coats, reminiscent of the patterns stitched into Angus' newly acquired garb. They spot you as you rou d a corner.
"Aye. And what have we here, brothers? Who be this frssh faced felllow? And what fine company has he brought him with? "
I assure you, Chadderlay, I am not here to foment revolt or harm this city in any way. Your aunt brought me here because we need to... acquire... a certain item to defeat a common foe."
<incidentally, some of the red wizards in town are actively planning a revolt.>
<bump. I updated the action 2 posts prior (#125), so if you're relying on notifications, this post is to call your attention to my belated update. Thanks @everyone for your patience. This is roughly the path you've taken to get here, red being Chadderly, yellow for Angus, blue for the three arriving from Oerth. At the point you all met I switched to using a green line, originally I used blue from finish to the alley, and these artifacts are still visible. You're now at the X.

Angus will smile broadly, "Greetings, fellow Bulls! I'm Angus, just joined up over in the opposite side of town (insert here the opposite of wherever we are, i.e. if we on on the south, Angus will say North) cause my cousin Mario's a member and he told me how awesome you are. The Boss sent me to escort this here wizard over to the Leaning Boot for some sort of hush-hush secret meeting, I don't know the details. These others are the wizard's guests. How's tricks over in this part of Mulmaster?"
Gravity presses her lips together, squinting at the five well-dressed men while curling her upper lip in disdain. When she finds the knight trying to deceive them for no apparent reason, she will lean against a nearby wall while folding her arms. "He's lying, you know? He's been changing topic frequently and people generally do that when they try to hide something. I do that a lot."

@Legion4: Do you think anyone sees Sam cast disguise self? If yes, make a Charisma (deception) check, if no, make a Dex (sleight of hand) check.
