People only come to Icewind Dale because they've got nowhere else to go. In the best of times, the winters are harsh and the summers are brief. Food is scarce and there's precious little fuel on the tundra to keep a person warm. Folks are less likely to arrive seeking their fortune and more likely to hope to disappear into some snowy hamlet. But lately, things have been worse. There hasn't been a summer for at least two years, the sun never rises above the horizon, and people are saying that Auril the Frostmaiden, goddess of shivering frost and biting wind, is enacting revenge against the peoples of Ten-Towns. Whatever the cause, spirits are low, pickings are slim, and the (kinda) civilized folk of Icewind Dale need something or someone to save them. Could you be their salvation?

Hello all. I'm new to PbP but I've been playing and DMing for over 10 years. I want to dip my toes in the waters here and, to do that, I'd like to run Rime of the Frostmaiden. I'm looking for 4-5 players. You will start at 1st level. And, by time we are done you should be around 10th. But that's a ways out.
Things I like: 1. Exploration and Open Worlds 2. Role-Play 3. Survival Mechanics 4. The Rule of Cool 5. Newbies! (and Long-time players, too)
Things I do not like: 1. Abuse, Harassment, Hate Speech, Trying to have sexy-times in what is essentially a PG-13 public forum 2. Railroading 3. Murder Hobos 4. Watermelon (I admit that I'm weird)
Life is Icewind Dale is often nasty, brutish, and short. There is a chance your character will die (having a back-up character is not a bad idea). We will be using the variant encumbrance rules, so choose your gear wisely. Remember that it is cold out there.
Expected posting at least once daily, weekends excepted. Milestone leveling turned on. Allowed Content: PHB, DMG, XGtE, Tasha's, MtoM. If you want something from outside these sources, let me know in a DM. We might be able to make it work. Begin at Level 1. Starting EQ +50 gold for customization.
Ability Scores rolled in this thread, reroll 1s always, if total of all six is <70, then start over.

Name: Elk Running
Subrace: Eladrin Elf (Winter)
Class: Ranger (Beast Master (Primal Companion rules from Tasha's))
Alignment: CG
Background: Hermit
Brief Public Backstory:
Elk-Running was born Therree, a summer elf. Her parents were guardians of the Moonwoods, the thickly forested region just south of Icewind Dale. As she grew, she embodied the true spirit of summer--she was bold, adventurous, and daring. So daring, in fact, that she grew fond of the dwarven mining communities to the west and formed a particularly close friendship with two dwarven adventurers, Thorvald the Wanderer and Ivar the Stout.
Thorvald and Ivar drove back the fell things of the deep forests, including a great many predators who had been corrupted into shadow stalkers by some terrible malady whose source went undiscovered by Thorvald and Ivar for decades. Eventually, Thorvald took Ivar, Therree, and other adventurers into the heart of the Lurkwood, swearing they would destroy the source of the terrible evil or die trying.
Centuries passed before Therree emerged from the Lurkwood, alone.
Unsure of everything, she did only what felt right. She followed the snows. They led her into the heart of Icewind Dale and to Ten Towns. Here she has lived a life of solitude, interacting both with the inhabitants of ten towns as well as the occasional band of Reghedmen. They call her Elk Running, a name that she has chosen to keep.
Do you want an exclusive Icewind Dale trinket? Yes! 40
Brief Public Backstory: Uthal has always lived in Icewind Dale, up in the mountains with the other Goliaths. He has done some trading with the Ten-Towns before, and gotten some training from them in exchange. He's recently gotten some fame accidentally by scaring off a couple Yetis while being dragged behind an Owlbear he had tried to catch. He ended up liking the fame, and is planning to do more heroic things (become adventurer).

Do you want an exclusive Icewind Dale trinket?: Yes
Brief Public Backstory: Blackberry was raised by simple farmers, but he always had a knack for tinkering. He would fix broken farm tools, but they were always more efficient afterwards, doing twice the work for half the effort. He would build elaborate systems of pulleys and ropes and platforms to move bales of hay and feed and water the animals. Eventually, his parents recognized that his unique talent would be wasted remaining where he was, so they sent him to the city to apprentice to an ironsmith. Even there, Blackberry's curiosity would drive him to make all sorts of unusual objects, of metal, stone, wire, gears, and though he did not realize, a little bit of magic as well. Eventually, with his master's blessing, Blackberry set up his own workshop and store, selling clocks, household gadgets, tools, and various other oddities. However, his curiosity and constant tinkering in the shop far outweighed his business acumen, and soon, he was broke. He has come to Ten Towns hearing that there might be some need of a tinkerer, and also his insatiable curiosity has been piqued by the stories. What could be the source of the unnatural cold? Has someone finally mastered a way to control the weather indefinitely?
Brief Public Backstory: Aubin is a courtier from Neverwinter. An an occasional sight among nobles and affluent citizens. In truth he was fixer for those that can afford his services. He spent his days covering up indiscretions and finding wayward family members. He may seem a dandy, but he can handle himself. Currently he has been tasked to travel to Ten-Towns and offer aid to a clients last remaining family member, who for some odd reason chose to live in the frigid north. Aubin was reluctant, but once a contract is accepted he will follow through to the very end. That was his creed.

Brief Public Backstory: Hailing (haha) from the northern reaches of the Feywild, Talvi spent a large portion of his early life isolated in the secure confines of the Feywild fjords. Well-adjusted to the chilly oceanside winds that bit through his clothes, he did not shy away from whatever it took to survive in the bitter climate and harsh landscape. His interactions with others were few and far between, though he had always found a penchant for new people and interesting stories. Life in the Feywild had always held its brutal highs and lows, but a peculiar occurrence two years ago stood out in the back of Talvi's mind. A storm unlike anything he had ever seen before had hit during the return from a failed hunting trip, leading the Eladrin to stray from the safety of the wilderness pathways he had known all his life like the back of his hand. Disoriented, exhausted and starving out, Talvi could go no further. Finding what he believed to be his final resting place, he got as comfortable as possible in the snow and ice, drifted off in due time - and to his bewilderment, awoke once again. Someone had found him in their world now. Surrounded by curious, survival-hardened faces speaking unfamiliar tongues, the Eladrin shunned his new home initially. Refusing this foreign habitat as his own - despite its glaringly obvious similarities - he focused as much of his energy towards studying how to understand the locals, their realm, and how to return to his beloved homeland - but as the years went by, he began to fear he was losing touch with where he came from. Armed with a wealth of new, if not limited study upon arriving in this bizarre isolated locale, Talvi finally decided it was time to get back into the field - and figure out why he was sent here.
Fenix is new to the region of Ten-Towns (and Icewind Dale as a whole). A former soldier for one the southern kingdoms currently experiencing an intense sense of wanderlust, he left his life in the military to begin traveling Faerun to see the world and find the "something" he felt was missing from his life. At first completing odd jobs here and there, he eventually turned to adventuring as a way to continue to see the world; along the way also learning a few secrets from the secretive druids he had met on his journey. After a few years of traveling, he eventually ended up as far north as he had ever been - Icewind Dale. Perhaps he would finally find what he was looking for somewhere in the frozen tundra...

Brief Public Backstory: Coddled and protected from the outside world by a single human father, Aura Dyernina lived a very sheltered life. Her wealthy father was well-meaning, but his constant surveillance left her isolated with nothing but herself to keep her entertained. Aura used books to escape this loneliness, finding solace in the fantasy worlds of words. Unfortunately for her father, these books would lead to an insatiable lust for adventure - the Genasi longed to be like one of the heroes from her stories. Eventually, her overwhelming need for excitement beat down her love for her father, and at the age of 19, the Genasi ran away from home. Due to her father's protection, Aura is extremely naive, and this combined with her friendly nature got her in a few tricky situations when she left home. Somehow she managed to get out of each without even realising the depth of the situation, and continued on her search for adventure. This lasted for about a year until she somehow found herself in the frozen lands of Icewind Dale. (I have a few things to add privately which will clarify how she ended up in Icewind Dale :) )

Born out of wedlock to a charming half-elf bard and a tavern maid, Sabetha was raised by her grandfather in the High Forest. A retired Harper agent, devotee of Selune and Monk trained in the Way of Mercy. As the time came for her to set off on her own - for adventure - she felt herself more than ready. Exhilarated. Little did she know.
When Sabetha was sent to Waterdeep to join the Harpers, her first assignment was as a spotter for a covert infiltration. Targeting the villa of a rich and powerful family, the Cassalanters. A villa the Harpers were investigating, with rumors of human sacrifice and the presence of devils within. She had scaled the walls and hidden at her assigned spot in the outskirts of the villa grounds, taking down an imp disguised as a raven with her bow and waiting. Watching. But the operation had been compromised, her friends and associates caught, tortured and turned. She was on the run from rich and ruthless people and worse. She had to get as far from Waterdeep as she could - from the revenge of the Cassalanters and their hellish consorts. Somewhere no one would look for her.
And so Sabetha had fled from Waterdeep to Neverwinter to Luskan and finally to Icewind Dale. The far corner of the world. No devils up here, surely? Just bitter cold, and an unnatural darkness that felt wrong in the light of her faith in Selune. She tried ordinary jobs, but the itch remained. To stay true to what being a Harper meant, even though she no longer had a right to call herself one. To be the song for those who have no voice.
