"Through the mists of the Ethereal Plane shines the Radiant Citadel. Travelers from across the multiverse flock to this mysterious bastion to share their traditions, stories, and calls for heroes. A crossroads of wonders and adventures, the Radiant Citadel is the first step on the path to legend. Where will your journeys take you?"
Hi everyone-
An Invitation!
I’m recruiting for a new play-by-post game using the not-yet-released published adventure, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel. Would you like to join us?
Obviously, this is a big leap of faith for me. I haven't yet read or seen the adventure, as it will not be released until tomorrow! I will be reading it quickly, following it as written, in the spirit the authors intended, without unnecessary changes. Fingers crossed! We will start with the first adventure, for first-level characters, and see how far we go from there.
The game will live entirely in this forum on D&D Beyond. There will be a separate text-only Discord server for out-of-character chat. (If you’re not a Discord user, don’t fret - it’s not critical and we’ll help you set it up. It’s very easy.)
We want to recruit committed players to our game. You should be able to make a short post at least once a day, six or seven days a week. (Of course, we understand that there may be times when real life intervenes and you may have to occasionally step away.) New players and folks new to play-by-post (PBP) are both very welcomed!
So… Propose a character you might play. We follow rules-as-written: standard rulebooks, nothing too exotic. Keep in mind that (from what I understand) while there are no new races or classes to play in this adventure, there will be some new backgrounds to choose from. (Stay tuned!)
How to apply: You DON’T need to roll your character’s ability scores yet, or even settle on your class or race yet. (But here’s a preview: You’ll start off at first level, and draw from the Player’s Handbook, or possibly Volo’s, Mordenkainen’s, or Xanathar’s. No homebrew or exotic stuff – sorry!) Instead, PM me a little info about yourself and your potential character ideas:
1. Tell me a little about your D&D and play-by-post background. Just curious to learn more about you! Again, new 5e players and new PBP players are very welcome.
2. Next, tell me a little about the character you might consider for this adventure.
• Possible Race/Class: Keep it simple.
• Backstory: Optional. (Keep it short!)
• Background: In addition to the usual backgrounds, there will be some new ones - check back tomorrow! But give me a sketch of your thoughts right now.
• Personality: Beyond the usual “traits”, how do you want to play this character? Who do you want to be? What are your inspirations, if any, from literature, film, or elsewhere? Tell us a little about your character’s quirks. Let’s make this fun!
I DON’T need: • Ability Scores: Not yet - We’ll worry about that later. • Character sheets. Not yet. Soon!
Application deadline: How about, say, about 36 hours after I post this? (Say, Tuesday 9:30 PM EDT UTC-04)
We hope you can join us! PM me with any questions or concerns.
HI cbaer8, I've been waiting for this (the Radiant Citadel) too. Thank you!
1. I've been doing play-by-post since the Pandemic. I love it since you can play off and on while in-real-life stuff gets handeld and the import stuff (like this campaign ;-) ) can be done in the in between times.
2. I'm thinking of a Magic using class. - For Race I was thinking Haregon - Backstory: Wide-eyed and Bushy Tailed, I've come to the Citadel to seek fame and adventure. Is what he will tell others. In truth he's a refugee. HIs homeland destroed with only a few escaping with their lives. - Background - TBD (waiting to see the new ones; otherwise I'll go with Haunted One - Personality - Flightily and Bravadoes
Looking forward to the new Adventure's release tomorrow !!
1. I've been playing DND for over 20 years at this point. I used to play a lot of play by posts back when I was younger and these days I find I have spare time on my hands to enjoy some collaborative story telling with others. I've been a forever DM and past few years have been able to dip my toes into being just a simple player. I'm notorious for collaborating as a good DND session is created not only by the DM but also their players. Working together to have a great time and share stories is what it is all about. I love putting WAY too much thought into my characters and why they act the way they do. This comes from my believe that heroes and villains need to be dynamic if they are going to be engaging and interesting.
2. Next, tell me a little about the character you might consider for this adventure.
• Possible Race/Class: Thinking a Ranger Bugbear
• Backstory: Aiming for the hunter trying to prove themselves here. It would be a good fit as a level 1 ranger. Insert family/drama that could tie into the story. Finding themselves in a weird and alien world at the radiant citadel through whatever odd circumstances they see this as the best opportunity to find a truly magnificent prey to bring back as proof of their status as a mighty hunter. How do they get back again?
• Background: I would love to fit in some specifics if able but without seeing the options I'm unsure what to change. Could it be their tribe finds hunt regularly through the citadel? Unknown but open to suggestions and ideas that would help bring it all to life.
• Personality: A young hunter ready to prove themselves. Reckless. Seeking praise. Nothing wrong with finding allies to help as long as they get the killing shot. They will have an odd perception of culture being raised in a tribe of bugbear. City living will be alien to them and their values will be different from norms. I expect some cultural shock as well as cultural clashes. ideally pulling some ideas of vast differences of culture from the Radiant Citadel book.
1. I have been playing dnd for 15+ years, mostly 5e since it was released, however I have only recently gotten into thr Pbp scene. I started Pbp after I moved during the pandemic and couldn't play in person.
2. Possible Race: kobold, maybe
Class: front line caster (paladin, eldritch knight, hexblade, artificer)
Backstory: joined a smuggling crew after they saved him. Found a new calling (class dependent) now fancies adventuring.
• Background: probably a smuggler.
• Personality: overly polite, calls everyone sir or Ma'am, and often timid, thinking everyone is stronger then he his. Loyal to a fault.
1. I have watched dnd shows for over 4 years now but never really had the time to play until covid was a thing. I have played a few campaigns. Some of my most memorable characters include a wizard who got sick at the sight of blood and never passed a strength check, a cleric Viking that basically behaved like a barbarian with some thunder magic and a rogue who one shotted a bone demon by disguising himself as a skeleton and lying on the ground nearby waiting to strike. I have been playing play by post for about a year. I even tried to Dm a game for my family (didn’t work, they just kept trying to spilt the party 4 ways to cover the most ground lol). Overall I still really enjoy the game and the stories people create together.
2. An half elf Paladin/ cleric, still haven’t made up my mind
Background: acolyte
Backstory: The idea I had in mind was he served a temple of Lathander, god of rebirth and renewal, as but recently has been questioning the gods inaction in stopping evil in the world. He likes the idea of what they stand for but his faith is being tested. He has decided to leave his temple to try and find teachings of his god in other temples to see if they can give him enlightenment on this.
Personality: My warrior is very young and naive of most matters. Spending most of his life sheltered, he hasn’t had to deal with many people and monsters. He has always struggled to follow his teachings the way the temple wanted him to. While they detest violence in most ways he believes that sometimes it is necessary to stop an evil spreading. He believes that there are many ways to serve the gods and keeping a narrow mind in life means you will never grow as a person. He is inquisitive, smart but also unsure of his gods intentions. He doesn’t understand why the gods interact with mortals more regularly and why so much suffering occurs in the world. It is a constant battle for him and no matter how much he discovers he always ends up asking more.
1. Long-time role player, several PbP games, some of which ran for quite a while.
2.
• Possible Race/Class: I‘ve got a human fighter folk hero I’ve been wanting to play. Or maybe a Kenku arcane archer - would make for some interesting role playing
• Backstory: The human is a local hero who screws it up by also being a drunk loser. The kenku is a scrappy street kid trying to make good.
• Background: Pretty much that!
• Personality: The human has visions of being a romantic hero, but no confidence despite being objectively awesome. A screwup bigger than normal forces him to strike out and try something new. The kenku speaks in quotes from popular entertainment because that’s what he knows (in world, but I’d probably be digging up Shakespeare lines - maybe too gimmicky? Maybe worth it) he’s fearful but protective of fellow vulnerable people.
I started playing DND my Junior year of college, and got heavily into PbP during the pandemic (for obvious reasons XD).
I'm thinking either an Eladrin Barbarian
My Eladrin Barbarian is part of an entertainment troupe that enjoyed going between the feywild and the material plane to bring laughter to everyone they could. - Background: Entertainer (Though Witchlight Hand is a tad more fitting) - They find everything about the material plane to be fascinating, regardless of how mundane it is. They enjoy playing pranks on others to try and make them feel better if their down or upset, and adore children more then anything else because they always ask to see them do tricks. I'm thinking along the lines of the Jester (not the CR character) archetype for a base and building on top of that.
1. Hi there. I've been playing off and on for a year now, but I've been reading up and following live streams on DnD for several years now. I'm trying my hand DMing for a group of friends at the moment (loving it by the way) and I have absolutely no experience in PbP games, but I wanna give it a shot.
2. Race/Class: Human/Druid.
3. Background: Guild Artisan/Merchant - This fella made his living as an artisan wood caver in a small village outside of the city of Jigow on the continent of Wildemount. He specializes in making the finest fishing rods in the region and exports his goods all across Exandria through his contacts in Jigow.
4. Backstory: In Wildemount, the wilder races are not only common place, but quite prominent. He grew up mingling with orc, drow, bugbear and goblin. As a matter of fact, after years of apprenticeship under a renowned female goblin wood carver, they fell in love and lived happily together for over 60 years. Upon the passing of his wife, he closed up his business and vowed to live the rest of his days traveling the world and, perhaps with a bit of luck, one day making his way to the famed Radiant Citadel.
5. Personality: He is a country boy at heart, and though aged well beyond 60 years old, he lives life with a childlike wonder and he's always eager and willing to try new things. He misses his wife dearly and he has taken comfort, not only in his new life on the road, but in his new study of nature and the ways of the druid.

1. I have plenty of experience with D&D 5e as well as some other systems such as Pathfinder. I did a lot of PbP forum RP when I was younger, have been dipping my toe back into it lately!
2.
• Possible Race/Class: Human Paladin! I'm thinking of multiclassing to either Divine Soul/Draconic Sorcerer or War Wizard depending on how things develop/how stats work out, as I want to play a character who blends the divine and arcane. :)
• Backstory: A servitor of Mystra from humble beginnings.
• Background: If the new UA might be allowed, Gate Warden would be cool and seems fitting for this setting! Otherwise probably Acolyte?
• Personality: I want to play a character who is full of wonder, a love of magic, and a desire to help lift up others. Passionate and open, falls in love easily - not just with people, but also with places, cultures and ideas.
#1: While I have participated in numerous PbP 5e games in another forum, none of them have lasted and I'm looking to scratch an itch.
#2: I am interested in playing a vanilla half-elf lore bard. Nothing overdramatic in terms of background. Parents aren't alive anymore, but it doesn't eat him up. He's a bit on the young side (15-16) and is trying to make his way in the world. Despite his profession, he's introverted and may have a bit of imposter's syndrome going on.
While I won't formally close applications quite yet, I already have 27 applicants for a party of 4-6, so I may close applications a little early. (If you're still planning to throw your name into the hat, please do it ASAP!) I'm already dreading turning soooo many of you down. I apologize in advance!
Update: I'm just getting my very first look at the (digital) Radiant Citadel adventure book this morning. (I hope to get my physical book today!) Right now it looks like there are NO new backgrounds - so I apologize for spreading that rumor. Again: no new playable races, classes, or backgrounds.
So I'll make a final selection of 4-6 of you in the next 12 hours or less. Again, I apologize in advance to you 20+ undoubtedly wonderful players whom I will have to turn down tonight. Ideally, I'll try to assemble a nice mix of new and veteran players.
