Lam follows Saoirse to the office, thinking as he walks about what she and Hemlock had said- especially what Saoirse had said about being glad to count him among them. He can feel something lightening in his chest- this group has made him feel valued, which he has not felt in a long time. He will accept the bullywug spawn title for that, even if he doesn’t understand why being last necessarily makes him a rotten bullywug spawn.
He watches everyone else look through the office, figuring they know better what to look for than he does. Suddenly, Hemlock appears to hear something worrying and Sha goes on alert. Lam is instantly tense. He speaks not exactly in a whisper, but in a low, quiet grumble: “What’s wrong? Is someone coming?”
Perception: What can Lam hear about what is going on? It was low. (These got automatically rerolled without me editing them- I’m going back to clarify what they were and get rid of the banner!)
As she grabs the map without thinking, all the placed tokens fall to the table and Saoirse mutters:
- Ok, that was stupid of me- but then hears the metallic sound of the keys she hadn't previously noticed and adds - Oh, well ... I guess every cloud has a silver lining.
Though her fist idea was to give any keys she found to Saffi or Sha, and seeing that there is a locked drawer in the table, it looks more probable that these specific keys are meant to open the drawer and not the armory door. So she grabs them and tries them on the drawer carefully, checking if they match and unlocking it if they do.
At the same this is happening, she hears Tesfaye saying that the papers they're just reading point to someone using the HMC to look for something and this caughts her attention. But that line of thought is suddenly interrupted by Hemlock, Sha and Lam going on alert. Saoirse then quicky hides the keys in her trouser's pocket and instead of opening the drawer (that is, if they keys have worked), she readies the crossbow pointing at the door they are looking at.
The keys in Saoirse's hand (or pocket) do not fit the desk drawer.
"Who the hell is still in here! Don't you know we're fighting for our lives out there?" An Aarokocra dressed in the same uniform as the dwarven guards bursts into the room through the southwest door, carrying a longbow, and a morningstar, as well as a quiver with only a couple arrows remaining. On seeing her, Tisfayeimmediately retracts their head and limbs into their shell, falling to the floor in a panic. Lam, Saffi, andHemlock drop into fighting poses, and Saoirselevels a crossbow at the aaŕokocra. The guard continues. "Wait, aren't you the lot that just arrived? You should still be in the yard with.. wiiiithhh... *yawn*"
A shadow seems to rise from this tips of her talons up towards her crown feathers, as though the sun were setting just for her. As the shadow passes her beak, her speaking slows and she yawns, and when it reaches her eyes they slowly close. The weapons fall and clatter loudly to the floor, as she drops and falls asleep, and her wings instictively fold up around her head. Through the door that she entered, you can see a narrow hallway and on the opposite side of it, light pouring in through an arrow slit in the outer wall. A shout comes from down the hallway outside the door, much closer than the animal roars and the shouting of humanoids that is happening outside of the outer wall. "Aerar, are you OK?"
Sha-Gravis finishesmuttering under his breath, and another set of feet begins to approach through the hall.
After Sha's swift reactions (first to make the Aerar sleep and then to grab her weapons), Saoirse's reaction follows: she puts the crossbow aside and begins to push whatever furniture is nearest to the door to prevent any more guards from entering.
- Help! - she asks to her new comrades.
Perhaps if someone moves the Aarakocra out of the way and other helps her push the piece of furniture (or find some other way to lock the door) they could lock that entry to the office for good. With a little bit of luck, this would give them enough time to get their gear and run back to the yard to escape through the hole the elves opened to free Cylence.
If they manage to secure the door, she will give the key she found to whoever is free, so they can try it on the armory door. Saoirsewill keep vigilant just in case the people outside being to push and more obstacles need to be added.
Hemlock watches the Aarakocra slump to the floor and curl up asleep, and looks to Sha-gravis with wide eyes.
"Uh oh, another one", he says in his slow drawl when they hear someone else moving outside. He steps forward and picks up the Aarakocra, gently moving them aside.
After watching what Sha does, Lam mutters: “Good move. Magic sleep.”
Lamsees Saoirse moving furniture and requesting help. He tries to help, moving whatever large furniture he can in front of the door. He doesn’t care about being quiet and will opt to move the bigger things in the room if his muscles will work with him.
Hemlock does not notice any rope or similar in this room. As Hemlock easily cradles the Aarokocra, carrying her and placing her on a large desk by the wall (the one with a locked drawer in it), and Sha-Gravis quickly scoops up the Morningstar and Longbow, Saoirse begins to drag chairs and loose objects to place in front of the door. Moments later, all of those smaller pieces of furniture burst into splinters as Lam grunts and helpfully slams the giant, solid stone round table on top of the pile. It would take someone as strong as Lam to open that door again.
The door shakes once as someone tries to push it open. "What is going on in there!? Aerar, please respond!"´A few tense and precious seconds pass. The voice gets louder, but at the same time slightly more muffled - as if the speaker is facing away from you and yelling. "Get back in here! Retreat! It's all been a distraction! - they're inside the walls!!!"
Aerar the aarokocra will wake up in about 40 seconds.
Tisfaye emerges from their shell as they realize that all of their new companions are sticking to Action instead of panic. They walk past Saoirse and take the keys she is holding out, and use them to open the door to the armory. As they do, they keep quickly and quitely repeating under their breath, "no more dead." When the door to the armory swings open, they smile a turtle's smile, and say in a more measured and confident tone, "OK, now we're talking. The tide is rising."
Saffi is welcome to narrate that she has done things during all of this - WotW has been busy.
Sha-gravis knows Aerar will rouse very soon, he looks to Hemlock, “Go retrieve as much as you can, we must leave! That’s right Tisfaye, no more dead, we flee!”
As Sha turns back to Aerar he uses thaumaturgy to increase his vocals, again to color his eyes full crimson. Lastly to color the light a hazy shade of purple.
With the door problem solved, the next one arises: keeping the Aarakocra controlled. Sha hasn't answered Hemlock's question, but the look on the tabaxi's face is clear enough: the guard is about to wake up. The fire genasi frowns:
- Damn, is there really no rope around here? Perhaps in the armory?Hemlock, do you see any rope in there?
As she asks this, she takes the crossbow again and points it to the sleepy Aarakocra:
- Guys, quickly!- she urges the rest as they are gathering their equipment - By the way, if you see a scmitiar it's probably mine. Can anyone get it for me? My studded leather should be next to it!
When Aerar wakes up she'll find the crossbow pointing at her. With all the calm she can muster, Saoirse warns her:
- You are surrounded, friend. So don't make any funny movements. We are just going to take what's ours and leave.
Intimidation = 6 ... Daaamn :( I Hope Sha and his Thaumaturgy are more convincing than me!
When the rest are finished getting their gear, Saoirse will suggest leading the Aaracokra into the Armory. Then Tesfaye can lock her inside using the key.
- No more dead, right? - the fire genasi smiles to the Tortle.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Aerar awakens Saoirse gives a fair warning Sha grants himself guidance then levies a bit more fair warning, “If you come after us, even your dreams will become my hunting grounds!” Ended with Sha’s best roar.

Lam quickly enters the armory and tries to grab anything that belongs to him- or anything he knows belongs to anyone else. His first priority is his axe, which is hopefully with anything else he might own. His second priority are the things he knows belong to his friends- such as Saoirse’s scimitar or Hemlock’s amulet. Lam assumes that everyone’s sets of belongings would be kept together and also tries to grab whatever seems to be with those things too. If Lam’s belongings, Saoirse’s belongings, and Hemlock’s belongings seem to all be in the same spot, he also grabs as many things as possible from the things near there, assuming his other friends’ belongings would not be far.
Would Investigation work for finding the things he is looking for in the armory? This number… was mid. I don’t remember what it was exactly.
Hearing his friends repeat the mantra, Lam repeats it quite loudly as well: “No more dead!” With Lam frantically moving around the armory, what may have been meant as a rallying cry comes out more as a roar. Lam seems to be moving faster than his thoughts can process very well.
…Can I roll intimidation for being loud in a different room? I’ll roll twice to say I have disadvantage, and then you can use what you wish. These were both pretty good rolls!
The Armory is very well organized, easy to find your way in. Along the walls, there is space for - and labels for - all sorts of tools useful for mining, forestry, and building neatly hung. In the southeast corner, these saws, axes, pickaxes, ropes, etc. give way to a section with hanging weapons - but all but a few of them are gone. In fact, it's clear that almost all of the employees of the HMC are out for the day, and what's left over is just the remains.
However, on a large table in the middle of the room, there are 10 neatly folded bundles of belongings. You recognize each of your own names, Tisfaye, and four others. Most of these bundles include weapons as well as whatever else the prisoners had when they were delivered to the prison. This indicates a certain deal of respect for prisoners - most dungeon guards would just have taken these things for themselves. Lam, in his haste, tosses each one of these bundles into the Offices, without really checking what belongs to who. It will take a few seconds for each of you to find your bundle from the pile.
It is time for you all to get some gear!
When you go to pick up your pack of belongings, add "starting equipment" to your character, using the options given during character creation. Then, roll a d20 (a pure 'luck check'). Results:
1-5: Remove one item from your starting equipment (if it's something you start with multiple of, remove them all) , and you remove one weapon, shield, or piece of armor you would otherwise have.
6-10: Remove one item from your starting equipment (if it's something you start with multiple of, remove them all)
11-15: Your starting equipment is fully intact.
16-20: One piece of armor, a shield, or a weapon in your starting equipment is a magic +1 item
Hemlock manages to grab his Amulet from his pile before Lam tosses it through the door. He also finds a long, well-made length of sturdy rope.
While they are looking around in the Armory, a door in the south opens and an human carrying a longbow and a longsword steps into the room just as the giant bugbear roars "DEAD." The human throws up his arms, says "Nope. Nope, nope, nope," steps back out of the door he had just opened, and closes it behind him. You can hear the sound of him running through the hallway.
Tisfaye was also able to find their gear, and is now standing with an adapted backpack hanging from their shell, designed to fit around the dome of Tisfaye's body. They have also donned a shield that shimmers with strange colors and subtle power, and carry a futuristic hammer whose head can be adjusted to reveal various tools.
Aerarwakes up to the Tabaxi roaring in her face, and the Genasi pointing a crossbow at her. Her weapons are being carried by the Tabaxi, and she hears more roaring from the armory. Nevertheless, her spirit is not broken, and she flaps her wings towards you both to push herself back, disengage, before making a run towards the Northern door.
Hemlock briefly stares at the human, frozen in place until it backs away, and breathes a sigh of relief.
Having grabbed his amulet and found rope, he heads back to the armoury door.
"Got some ro...oh", he says as the Aarokocra runs passed him and out the door to the corridor.
Seeing his stuff on the floor, he looks from the doorway to his stuff and back again, not knowing quite what to do. After a moment of indecision, he decides to pick up his things.
Sha's scream, though menacing, doesn't seem to scare Aerar. Same as the fire genasi's crossbow-shaped warning. In any case, the fact that the aaracockra decides to just leave makes Saoirserelax visibly. Though she has probably have gone to warn somebody, at least they haven't had to fight her at the prrecisee moment when almost everyone was quoting Tesfaye's "no more dead" mantra. The young genasi hopes to not see that woman - and no other guard, for that matter - again, but... she's not sure they will be so lucky.
She pats Hemlockin the shoulder when he comes back to the office to see that the rope isn't needed anymore:
- Don't worry. I'm sure that rope will be useful in the future - she smiles at the firbolg and then grabsthe bundle labeled with her name. Examining it Saoirsefinds that her crossbow is missing. "Thank goodness I kept that dwarf's crossbow!", she thinks as she puts on her studded leather armor, scimitar and backpack with the rest of her belongings. Then she looks at the group and throws an appreciative smile at them - Good job, guys, by the way! I think we've really done some nice teamwork. But, before leaving: Tesfaye, didn't you mention something bout the HCM seemingly being used to search for something? Where did you read that? Anyone care to do a quick check with me? I would like to say that I excel at investigating, but that wouldn't be true...
(... with a +0 .. yep, not the most studious around here.. )
I will roll an investigation just in case, though I very much prefer giving advantage to someone else if possible, DM! ... Lol... I rolled a 2. Whatever documents Tesfayepoints to, it is clearly gibberish to Saoirse.
Saoirse’s calm demeanor as she take the time to don her armor and encourage everyone really helps Sha not panic, he takes the time to also get into his chain mail and replace the borrowed shield with his own.
“Thank you Lam for sliding out my gear. Sorry Hemlock I thought I could scare the bird man into a surrender but him running off works too! We should really get outta here pronto.” If Sha sees the dragonborn prisoner’s bundle he will check its weight maybe take it with too.
After Lam hastily slides all of the bundles of things from the armory to the office, he goes back to the office to collect his own things. He notices that most of his belongings are intact- his staff is missing, but he is glad to see his axe again. While collecting his things, he watches Aerar take off toward the northern door. Seeing nobody in a rush after her, after a moment of thought, he says: “She is going where we are going.” It is said like a statement and not like a question, but he looks to everyone else as he says it as if expecting confirmation. He looks ready to take off after her in a heartbeat, but makes no move to do so.

Hemlock does as he is bidden, moving into the other room to help find his belongings and those of his companions. Along with rope.
”No more dead”, he says quietly, the same as the others, feeling the guilt of being one of the ones to take a life.
In the other room, he sees Lam moving about quickly and noisily, and tries his best to search without being bowled into by the bugbear.
“Tell us what to look for”, he calls out to those who haven’t asked for something particular to be found.
