Calavaz, still shocked by the death of Galdren, doesn't yet seem to be aware of what has your party so concerned. He's still by the doorway when you entered, and has his hand wrapped around a holy symbol, eyes screwed shut as he prays for his departed brother.
Ravenous eyes switch between each of you as the pale woman continues to climb higher. As she nears 30 feet from the top, Crannocthrows out a thorn whip, snapping the stone just above her fingers. You hear a hear, and her gaze locks onto the cleric.
Despite the strength he draws from Silvanus, it is difficult for Crannoc not to be unnerved by the climbing creature's gaze, knowing he does not yet have the strength of divine connection necessary to turn undead. The thought makes him glance at Calavaz who is holding his holy symbol and praying.
"Calavaz! Your brother was corrupted and held in thrall by an undead horror. We see it now, climbing the walls of this pit implacably, set on revenge against us. Look for yourself! We may not be able to run from it unless you are able to turn it with your holy symbol. Please try!"
He turns to his other, more charismatic companions. "Can you convince him? If Calavaz is a priest and can hold the undead at bay, it may be just enough to allow us to flee with a better chance of that abomination not catching us eventually. Unfortunate that we have to leave Galdren's mask behind."
Crannoc remains on the opposite lip of the well from the side that the creature is climbing. He lashes out with the green, thorny vines from his free hand once more, aiming to pull the abomination off the wall of the pit into the center of the hole so that it falls back to the bottom.
Movement: remain or circle to be on opposite edge of well to climbing creature.
Action: Thorn Whip to hit: 15 (30' melee spell attack. Still no double-digits on the d20 in a long, long time, getting an 8+7 this time, but maybe it's enough?) Thorn Whip damage: 4 magical piercing Thorn Whipforced movement on hit: undead horror pulled diagonally up and east between 5' and 10', enough to center it in the hole. No saving throw.
Bonus Action: (Only if target is not already pulled off the wall) - Telekinetic Shove, DC15 STR Save or be pulled 5' up and east towards Crannoc.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Calavaz opens his eyes as Crannoccalls to him, eyes glistening with tears. He seems confused by what's being asked of him...And it occurs to you that though he may have found religion, that doesn't necessarily mean Lathander has blessed him with gifts.
The cleric'sthorn whip slaps against the stone above her fingers once more, just missing. She's taken by surprise however as unseen force pulls her from the wall, sending her tumbling back down with a screech.
Iris' ray of arcane energy fires down into the pit, slamming the stone floor next to the undead creature's head.
Order -> Hildr(Top of Initiative) -> Gawain-> Gallant
Heartened by the creature’s long fall and screech, but rendered powerless by its distance, Hildr seeks to rally her companions who have ranged attacks—which is all of them: “Keep firing at it with whatever you’ve got!”
She moves 15 ft to the southwest corner of the room and searches for oil or something else to burn it and/or to set alight the remnants of its coffin with.
If she finds something, she'll use the remaining 15 ft of her movement to return with it to the edge of the pit; if she doesn't, she'll move just SE of Iris (planning possibly to search the other room on her next turn).
Quickly looking through the barrels, crates, and open chests in the corner of the room, Hildrfinds nothing easily flammable that could be used to ignite the thing in the pit. Most of it are trinkets, things people would have been carrying on the road such as jewelry or trinkets. The wall sconces along the walls of this room are filled with lit torches.
Gawainbreathes a sigh of relief as the creature falls, though he knows this isn't over yet. "How many falls like that do you think it can take?" He stands watching at the edge of the hole, waiting for it to get high enough for him to shove it back down.
The bolt slices across the pale woman's neck as she's getting up from her fall. As she gets up again, you notice two things:
1) For as true a shot as it was, the attack didn't seem to do as much harm as you thought it should. 2) You can see the wound stitching itself up as she stands.
A frustrated growl releases from her lips, and she rushes back to the wall to begin climbing again.
He had allowed himself to hope that Calavaz with his holy symbol and city-dweller deity might turn the undead horror, but he sees now that such is unlikely to be the case. Almost... almost, I can feel Silvanus' grace and dappled light right there... but alas I cannot turn the abomination either. Not yet.
He is relieved that despite missing with his Thorn Whip, his Telekinetic Shove pulls the creature off the chasm wall and back down, but notes with dismay that Gallant's solid shot with his crossbow only seems to have partial effect, and that the enemy seems to be regenerating. Like a... troll? Can we burn it? But it is undead, not a deformed giant. This is something truly unnatural and it has personal enmity towards us now. It will not stop.
"Friends, I fear I was wrong. It resists ordinary weapons and regenerates itself. Unless one of you can set it on fire or such, I now believe that the instant one of us knocks it back down off the hole's edge again, we should all retreat immediately. Close the stone door, wedge it shut if we can, and run. There is no daylight outside to deter it, but we may have no choice. Or we keep firing away and hurling it back to wear it down. What say you?"
He considers taking a long range shot with his sling but using weapons has never been his strong suit. Knowing undead creatures may resist or be immune to necrotic damage, he nevertheless sends a sliver of Silvanus' inverse, withering, rotting energy down 60' at the creature to learn if it works.
Movement: if necessary, he continues circling so he remains on the opposite side of the hole as the abomination, ready to Thorn Whip it later.
Action: Crannoc casts Toll the Dead: 60' range, DC15 WIS Save or take 9 necrotic damage.
Bonus Action: None (Telekinetic Shove out of range).
For a brief moment, Irisfeels relief that the nature cleric has come around to the idea of retreat. It is quickly overwhelmed by the fear of what they're retreating from. "I'll go check the other rooms for something we can use as a wedge. Hold it off as long you can!"She turns and dashes back into the main chamber, heading towards the other small rooms they never explored.
Relieved by Crannoc's suggestion, Hildr follows Iris into the adjoining room. Hildr turns left, however, not right [moving 5 ft S around the corner, not N, as Iris has gone], to Search the nearest cot and its environs for iron spikes, a hammer, flasks of oil, some other highly flammable substance, or anything else that might be useful in either destroying or deterring the awful creature.
Unfortunately, Hildr is in too much of a hurry to find much, if anything. She turns around, preparing to return, shouting: "Gawain, stay so we can shove it!"
Gallant will stand looking at the creature, reminding himself of what it feels like to lose someone you love, "We did not want to end your lover's life, we are only here to provide peace to all in this land, and this includes you. Please, tell us what we can do to provide amnesty to this horrid situation. Please let us talk out our pain!"
Gallant lowers his weapon as he speaks showing he means no harm to the creature.
