Backstory: Fin was a bright-eyed young man, full of hope and ambition to do good work for the people of his neighborhood. When he was pinned as a deputized watchman, he patrolled his streets with enthusiasm and familiarity, meeting everyone with smiles and criminals with heavy-handed justice framed with compassion. In the early months, he dealt with thieves and small fights, drunkards and adulterers. It had its frustrating bits, but he never forgot these were the people he grew up with. Over time, he was relocated to nearby communities. "Better opportunities for someone so ambitious for good," is what his superiors called it. Unfortunately, these were areas that needed extra guard presence. Larger gangs, smugglers, dens of illicit and strange dealings, racial tensions, poverty....all the things that led Fin to appreciate where he came from and carry a heavy heart for those who weren't so fortunate. Such was Fin's responsibility for the next three years. It jaded his mind, but still he persisted. His smile was less bright, and he gave less time to speak with those he contacted, but still his determination kept him moving to do good. One fateful night, however, his perspective shifted. Fin and a number of other watchmen were ordered to gather down the road from a suspected cult meeting house. All evidence was collected, and a writ was stamped by the local lord to raid the compound to root out the corruption. The beginning was straightforward: through the back, break the door, rush, subdue, and remove. There came a moment, however, where Fin came into a ritual room with two other watchmen. The room had three cultists, two opposite each other on the edge of a circle with the third in the middle standing over a sacrificial table. Fin thought nothing of the table or the act, he just knew he needed to move to prevent whatever was happening. Fin's partners tackled the ones on the fringes of the circle while Fin took the leader in the middle. The hooded figure, however, turned and thrusted a knife at Fin's face. The seasoned watchman twisted away from the blade and tackled the cultist. Voices of other watchmen approaching echoed down the hall, but Fin was focused on his current charge. Candles in the room must have been present and knocked over, because Fin's vision seemed to darken as he wrestled with the figure. A sudden shift, however, caught his attention as he was able to finally leverage against his opponent. The shift in weight, however, moved too quick, and he stared in horror as the knife plunged into the cultist's neck. Strangely, there was a smile on their face. Fin stood quickly, and his breath came in ragged gasps. His comrades wrestled and apprehended their own cultists by now and were congratulating Fin while encouraging him to remove the body. Fin only stared in shock as he felt the floor very quickly rise to meet him. Since that fateful night, a shadow lingers in Fin's mind. It whispers to him, about terrible secrets and hidden emotions. The voice doesn't act under any malicious intent, though. It simply observes and reports. That woman's children went without food last night; she slept well with her bottle...That merchant spends a great deal of time in alleyways at night... Fin was appreciative of this voice at first. After all, months after the cultist raid, Fin and several other watchmen uncovered a mystery that led to the rest of a lord that connected him to the cult Fin helps to root out. Within two years, though, Fin came to lose much of the hopeful ambition he carried early in his career. Too often, his patrols were led by this strange voice and uncovered the darkest of secrets hidden from view, and participants in these acts were sometimes those held in high regard during daylight hours.

A dead end job, but it did teach him noble etiquette and the bureaucracy behind what the public know. Now he is looking for a better opportunity something that lets him use his magical talents beyond the odd party trick for the boss's kid. Character Sheet:https://ddb.ac/characters/102067526/wFCabN
Actually that reminds me of something I've always wondered about.
WOULD there be magicians who performed for entertainment in a fantasy world, or would magic be so taken for granted that it would be as if someone in our world tried to entertain a crowd by changing a flat tire in front of them?

My answer to that has always been: Yes.
Obviously it varies from setting to setting, but while magic does exist in your standard fantasy world, not everyone can do it. Those that aren't born naturally powerful in magic tend to need to spend a lot of time and/or money learning to do it, and aren't always successful.
I kind of picture it as like a high skill/niche skill performance art, like a gymnastics troup or escape artist. Like, sure, as a human being both of those things are/were possible for me to do with enough time/practice, as evidenced by my watching other people do it. Some of them might have be 'naturals' at it, but they still put in the work. I, however, consider that kind of thing far beyond my abilities, so I can continually be amazed watching other people perform like that.
