Nosam felt the mood shifting, the unease was palpable. He realized the time had officially arrived for him to start earning his share of the coin; he couldn't help but wonder what Gundren had left out of the job description.
(rolls above in an earlier post and again here for reference)
Berry’s eyes instinctively scan the forest wall around him for bandits that might still linger or, worse, lie waiting for new prey, and a shout of warning forms in his throat. PER 9 / 9
Vidruth PER 9 / 9
The woods are rustling with small birds, and the slight dripping from the morning’s rain continues. There are no other sounds within Berry’s or Vidruth’s earshot.
Kiselina: The dead horses, his mind races. What was the markings of Gundren’s horse, his escort’s? Are these the same? PER 14 / 10
Nosam PER 14 / 11
Kiselina tries to correlate the dead horses with those ridden by Gundren and Haldir. However the pair left the day before the wagon did, and Kiselina never saw their horses. Yet, both Kiselena and Nosam notice (a decent perception roll indicating that…), one of the saddles has the kind of decorative stirrups and leatherwork which sometimes bears a family crest or monogram. One would have to look closely.
Marten’s…gaze darts from the horses to the embankments. PER 16 / 16
Daphyra - sniffs the air. PER 18/15
Marten and Daphyra both notice two things. First, the saddlebags look like they were slashed open and lie empty in random places. Second, under the horse to the right. A small leather tube to hold parchment, perhaps, half-buried in the mud. One would have to look closely to determine more about it.

“Berry, would you kindly maintain control of the wagon and the oxen, Sun and Moon as you are already situated in the most appropriate position?”
”Anyone else care to join me?”
Kiselina will then approach the horses with caution with whoever cares to join him.

How high are the top of the embankments above the level of the road?
By "steep," did you mean that the wagon cannot go around the horses, but the characters could easily walk up them? Or is it more like a sheer climb to the top? The reference photo from earlier looked like the former.

Although if one did that, the holly leaves, which are sharp and serrated, like most holly leaves in the vicinity, would cut exposed skin, and one could get stuck and off balance. Berry shrugs as he can't perceive any immediate danger around him and nods to Kiselina, "Alright, I'll sit tight." Then in contrast to his words, he flutters to the oxen and does his best to calm them and move them slowly forward closer to the bodies, albeit they appear to be enjoying the unexpected rest (Animal Handling: 8). At last he returns to the wagon and sits down, watching the others approach the horses while the oxen do shuffle forward (or not).
Focusing on the dead horses, and noting that Marten is closest to him, Kiselina addresses the Ranger. “Master Marten, would you kindly escort me to the horses for a closer inspection? I’m curious to determine if these are the horses of our dear employer Gundren or some other unfortunate traveler.”
Marten holds up his right hand and hisses, "Shhhhh."
He makes a "come here" gesture with his right hand toward Kiselina, not taking his eyes off of the horses and embankments ahead. Then he smoothly takes an arrow from his sheath but doesn't nock it, yet.
Nosam realizing it's time to get busy feels his pulse and excitement rise. He asks Vidruth and Kiselina if they want him to move towards the horses or prefer him to stay put with Berry. "It's about time my hammer gets a fresh coating of blood."
As Nosam and Vidruth come to the front of the oxen where Marten and Kiselina are, Marten speaks in a measured but quiet voice, not quite a whisper but more like someone talking to a scared animal: "Quii-et-ly now. I think the attackers were lookin' for something. They cut up the saddlebags. And I think I see a map case under that horse. On the right. Maybe they heard us coming and hid before they finished lookin'?"
With a quick glance at Kiselina, he continues: "I think I'll be more use to you back here, sir. But if I was gonna set an ambush, I'd put archers up there," pointing at the embankments on either side of the horses with his left hand, which still holds his bow. "Or maybe hide a troupe just around the bend up there, beyond the horses. Best look sharp."
Kiselina will then approach the horses with caution with whoever cares to join him.
If Kiselina, Nosam, and/or Vidruth decide to walk toward the horses, Marten will follow behind until he finds a place to hide that provides him some cover but that has a relatively clear view of the horses and as much of the road and embankments as he can manage. He nocks an arrow and keeps his eyes open for any movement from either side of the road.
vidruth works his way towards the horses warily, keeping next to nosam and keeping an eye on the spots that marten advised. his posture adjusts as he stays light on his feet while switching his grip on his staff to one for fighting instead of marching

Daphyra says quietly, almost under her breath to the others "There is something under one of the horses, that one on the right. The bags were slashed -- someone was looking for something and maybe they didn't find it. They may still be waiting for us now, so be very, very careful."
She will move forward with the group heading towards the horses, but will keep pace 5' behind them. She grasps her shield tightly to her with one hand and holds her amulet of Bastet in a vice grip with the other hand. She pauses after each step, nose twitching and her wide, alert eyes darting around, as she inches forwards.
Kiselina will then approach the horses with caution with whoever cares to join him.
Vidruth follows kiselina.
Berry flutters to the oxen and does his best to calm them and move them slowly forward closer to the bodies. (Oxen roll 4 to resist vs. Berry’s Animal handling roll of 8. The team strains and pulls the wagon forward 10’)
Marten nocks an arrow and keeps his eyes open for any movement from either side of the road. Movement: 20' to M6 / Action: Hide: Stealth 27
Nosam: Move 30’ to L7
Daphyra: move forward with the group heading towards the horses, but will keep pace 5’ behind them.
Marten, you are quite confident that you are utterly protected from view in any direction.
Others: your guard is up, however, little do you realize that many little evil eyeballs are following your every move from the thickets.
What happens next is just a bit complicated, so read carefully.
Daphyra: you smell goblins, upwind, near the dead horses. They are about to act.
Marten: the sound of creaking tree limbs suddenly changes in tenor ever so slightly: bowstrings being drawn, near the dead horses.
We are now in initiative. A number of goblins have taken the party by surprise, except for Marten and Daphyra.
Surprise Round.
Goblins go first. You count four of them. Using the thickets and horses’ bodies for cover, they scream trilling war cries as they spring up, bowstrings taut, and release black-fletched arrows. They then (OOC: bonus action) quickly drop back and hide behind cover.
One shouts in its strident screeching voice, “Leave the wagon here and go back where you came and no one gets hurt!”
Another echoes, “No one gets hurt!!,” and laughs loudly.
All four arrows have struck their targets: the oxen. Sun takes 11HP, and Moon takes 12HP. The oxen shudder and low sharply in pain. They strain at their harnesses, kicking. The wagon unexpectedly lurches forward another five feet then just as suddenly stops.
Berry: make a DC8 athletics check to avoid falling off the wagon. If you fall, make a DC15 DEX check to unfurl your wings fast enough to hover instead of drop. If you fail both checks, take 2HP bludgeoning damage from ox hooves and you are prone.
Vidruth & Daphyra: you are in the path of the oxen when they jerk forward. Roll DC8 STR check to avoid being knocked prone by the half-ton creatures.
You are now situated like so:
Marten & Daphyra (ONLY) may now take turns, in any order, during this surprise round. The goblins' stealth rolls are (in order) 7, 12, 10, 24.
Daphyra may then take a second turn at the top of round 1 due to her vigilant blessing. (I.e., Daphyra should in her next post post two turns: surprise round + Round 1)
Everyone else will go after the goblins in Round 1.
Everyone: roll a Perception check to spot the goblins, who are hiding, when it is your turn. Their last seen positions are given in the map. If you spot them I will give you further information before your next turn.
