Thaux turns while still having his Bull-skull-bow at the ready as he looks at the bonfire and hurriedly says, "Fools! Extinguish blaze, blaze is beacon!"
Korbiña goes into a defensive stance as she listens intently for the direction of the laughter, and moves a little to the side and outside the radius of the bonfire...
(and readies to dodge should anything go in her direction quickly)
Thaux immediately darts his head from side to side attempting to make sense of this odd laughter. He reaches behind his back and pulls out an arrow, setting it down on the nose of the bull skull as he pulls back a bowstring that is tied to both ends of the bull's horns.
OOC: (Can I try and roll perception to see where the laughter is coming from? Also I will take the ready action.)
[You could, but you'll have to roll disadvantage due to the thick veil of mist]
Thaux can't make out the shapes in the mist, but his sense of smell and hearing at least give him numbers: three on the left, flanking the giant, two from the middle, and two more on the right. Their cackling and their pack numbers betray their identity: hyenas! No doubt drawn by the sound of death from the river and the smoke from the fire. Opportunistic scavengers at best, ambush hunters at worst, and they use the mist quite well. They're cowards when their numbers are few. 'But seven of them, five of us,' he thinks.
Korbiña's eyes draw the foremost shapes of the lead hyenas as they lope out of the daunting veil, beady eyes fixed squarely on the adventurers. These are not desperate creatures, like the crabs on the beach. These are hunters, confident in their skill, eager for fresh blood. Looking around, more are spotted behind Quartz, attempting to flank him. Another pair approaches from her own rear. With only the cliff understandably clear, the party is surrounded. And still... she sees another. Another hyena, larger than the rest, stalks beyond the treeline. It's true size is lost in the fog, but a lucky glance is enough to discern its presence.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Quartz welcomes the hunter, feeling a sense of subtle comradery with the survivalist, but knowing enough to be wary of a lone hunter. Hunting is more effective in groups, so a lone hunter is either likely deceptive or antisocial. In either case, it's a red flag.
Before he can come to any conclusion about the disposition of the scaly scavenger, the eerie laughter from the trees demands immediate attention. The firbolg makes a trilling sound, loud enough to be heard from a distance, but not an unnatural sound, at all. perhaps a chirping insect or an unusual frog would make this sound in nature. In a moment, flying over the ridge the party scaled shortly before this moment, an owl, or what appears to be an owl, appears.
The owl lands at the giantkin's feet. The firbolg speaks to the owl in an animal series of clicks and whistles, which the owl listens to, tilting its head in interest as Quartz speaks to the avian predator. As Quartz completes the brief communique, the owl takes wing and flies fearlessly into the forest.
(Wild Companion, as find familiar, (it's a fey). Speech of beast and leaf)
Perception (if the DM thinks it's appropriate, just trying to expedite)
Apparently some hyenas were spotted since i started typing 20 minutes ago and got sidetracked by irl distractions.
ooc Question:
Well, now that I have a familiar on hand, and since the word 'flanking' has been invoked, I am wondering, are the optional flanking rules in use in this game.
Alerted to the presence of the hyenas, Quartz finds his shield braces himself. Though the shield is full-sized, in the giant's hands it appears almost as a buckler.
(Do I see the hyenas, because if so my character would leap into action and shoot at the first hyena he sees.)
[You got a ten, so no. You know what they are because of your bestial knowledge, you know where they're coming from and you think you know how many there are, but you don't actually see them. But if you want to try for a potshot and start combat in earnest, by all means. Only DiceDragon, roll to hit]

[I will actually use those rules later, but for this encounter, it's just unfortunate flavor text. Sorry for any confusion.]
Darkvision makes the fog seem lighter, but it cannot penetrate the veil itself. Regardless, Quartz's sharp gaze catches every single creature, even the brute in the back, holding position well behind it's brethren. Their presence in a forest like this is unnatural.

Asher stands from his siting position when he hears the laughter. " well folks looks like brake time is over ."

" not all of us can see in the dark , and i have to see something to cast spells on it let alone hit it with my spear"
