I go around town chatting up with the local soldiers, tell them about my encounter with the cheaters and their unbelievable rolls. I hype up the event and tell them to come and see justice be served (The locals will need to make a DC 17 Wis saving throw to not like me )
After that I do bit of push ups and practice my stabbing a bit. (do i level up ;D ???)
I also ponder a bit, if I'm in the wrong here, but then quickly shake that thought off: " in, all my days of gambling and cheating I've never seen dice fall with such luck. It cant be a coincidence, the cheater will pay."
Patience, young padawan. You had one fight, you are very far from levelling up.
The local soldiers mostly seem to take a liking to you. This is why when you tell the first few what you have to say they are genuinely surprised "Didn't you already start your basic training, maggot? Did you forget your place?" when you also mention that you are preparing to fight a superior at night they advise you to "Shut your stupid f*** maggot mouth about this, and go back and apologize, if you want to survive." When you mention to them when and where the meeting will take place they look at you as if you were crazy they thank you and say that they will make sure NOT to be there. They also ask you to forget they ever spoke to you, and after you tell them what you are planning, everybody just stands up and leaves. Nobody seems to want to be involved in something this highly illegal.
One of the soldiers tells you that fights between legionnaires are almost never to the death, but they can sometimes lead to one party or the other being maimed (loss of a nose, ear, etc). These soldiers are usually kept in lower regard by the others.
I call them cowards and tell them; " I dont care who he is. He can be the lord commander himself. It's not about the measly 6gp. I spit on 6 gp. Its about the principle. If he thinks he can rob me of my hard earned coin cause he outranks me, he's highly mistaken. I will gladly give my life for the cause alone. "
I stand up and shout out to whomever will listen.
" I look upon thee, dirt in the eyes of our supposed superiors. To those who can hear me I say: do not despair! The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear to be seen as our equals. The hate of men will pass. And dictators die. And the power they took from the people, will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish."
"If you sit in silence as one pair of muddy boots walks all over you. You invite ten more to come knocking"
"Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to these brutes! Men who despise you and enslave you! Who regiment your lines and tell you what to do, what to think, what to feel! Who whip you, underfeed you, treat you like cattle, dispose of you as they see fit and rob you when you're not looking! Don't give yourselves to these cowardly men. You are not cattle! You are men! "
"Or that is what I thought you were? But men would not allow one of their own to be robbed, beaten and mutilated for speaking out against injustice. Today it was my gold they took and they may help themselves to all of it. It is not riches I seek, but justice. "
"But know that tomorrow, it might be your gold they will want, your health, your life"
"You know me, I am your brother. I spoke out as they attempted to slay one of us. A young lad who's only crime was that he could not hold his drink. Have you forgotten that day? I have not. I watched from the ground, with muddy boots to my throat. I watched his blood seep to the floorboards. And I watched him take his last breath.
"SOLDIERS! Don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty. it is written, the kingdom of God is within man. Not one man, nor a group of men but in all men. IN YOU!
Tonight I stand up for YOU.
Tonight I bleed for you, my brothers. If another death is what it takes for you to open your eyes, then so be it. I hope mine will mean more than the last that perished.
For that one, meant nothing at all.
Persuasion: 16
I put my hand on the dwarfs shoulder, and give him an insightful nod.
The initial positive feelings of the soldiers towards Reginald are quickly gone when the recruit starts calling them cowards. With your intelligence, both of you know that veterans of many battles, who have risked their lives for their comrades, the glory of the Legion, and the Emperor and for the freedom of the people of the land countless times, usually do not take being called cowards lightly – especially if it comes from a newly arrived snot-nosed recruit who they see for the first time, a nobody freshly off the boat, who has not even had his first taste of battle.
It is only the innate likability of Reginald that keeps the soldiers from tearing him apart, but the tension is easy to feel as he starts his speech. If being called a coward is something seasond soldiers hate, then the only thing they hate more is when somebody starts openly badmouthing their superiors and the Legion. A few of the soldiers start paying attention. What you see in some eyes is rage, in some eyes you see pity, in some eyes disgust, some amusement, but they mostly find this whole situation ridiculous. Here on the frontlines, they live and die by the rules of the Legion, they understand and respect military discipline – and know that it has saved their lives many times. This was their way out of the dirt where they came from, to make something of themselves. They are the ones who protect this land from destruction and chaos, and now a mere recruit is starting to talk dirt about the sacred rules of this institution.
As Reginald goes on in his rant to talk about a „God” and a „kingdom of God,” the handful of soldiers look at him confused, some start laughing. As he talks about the Legion fighting for slavery, many eyes flare up and some shout various swearwords at him goes on to talk about „supposed superiors” and about equality you hear the words „mutiny!” – a crime punishable by death in every army in the world – and „blasphemy!” – against the Imperial Pantheon, and Tempus, the god of the Legion.
Reginald, as you speak, you start to feel your blood get hotter.
When four legionnaires come to take Reginald away, it is more for his own protection and to avoid a lynching, rather than to silence him.
Reginald, do you resist arrest? Hurtrun, what do you do?
Guys, imagine somebody telling a speech like this in a Texas bar filled with army veterans, or rather, a military mess hall somewhere in Afghanistan...
Reginald does not resist arrest, and gives master Dwarf a stop sign by shaking his head not willing to get his only friend into trouble.
This was the last straw, Reginald had spent an hour writing that speech, he felt good about it, he had even fantasized about the applause that it would garner "I've just been unlucky so far, Reginald had thought as he was writing it" .
Reginald had never felt so scared and alone in his entire life. His disappointment masked his fears though as he seemed to have lost his abilities the day he got caught and sent on board that bloody boat.
Reginald looks around the men booing him and throwing things in his direction. He has failed miserably in everything he's tried to do this past month. "On my best day, I couldn't even convince a sadomasochistic brute to direct his blows elsewhere. I don't think I could have phrased that any better"- Reginlad thinks. " I've spent my entire life mastering the art of persuasion and deception. They used to say at the ol tavern, "careful around this one, one minute with him and you'll be buying his drinks tonight." I havent even made friends, regardless of how long i talk to them. Well, except for this one - Reginald looks at the dwarf "He probably just feels sorry for me, the elf probably told him to keep me out of trouble. I bet he hates me like the rest of them. " I couldnt even convince a cripple to join me. " -why did I think I could convince an entire platoon.
"I used to cheat at dice all the time, then convince the entire room that I was the one being swindled. Now the tables have turned it seems, well almost, The ones I swindled on never got mutilated, they just got thrown out of the tavern." - Reginald reflects
I've accomplished nothing. They are right to call me a maggot, I am a talentless maggot.
From now on if I'm not hanged for this, I will only utter only the words "Yes sir" or "No Sir" and if they ask my name, I will tell them my name is "maggot" Reginalds eyes start to water as hes taken away by the legionnaires.
I'm gonna follow the legionnaires taking Reg to wherever they're taking him, when I get there I wanna judge for myself my best course of action.
If it's a kinda jail, I'd wanna speak to the people at the front desk and see if they'll let him out now that they think he's safe from a lynching. If not I'd like to see if I can post bail for him
9 for persuasion
If it's just a kinda hole in the floor like where they threw Solo in with Chewie, I'd want to go to the edge of the hole and pass Reg some rations to get him through, then I proceed back to finding whoever is in charge and see if and when they'll let him out
As the legionnaires escort the crying Reginald away, Hurthrun follows them. A drunken grunt in front of the inn calls after them: “Cheer up, lad! I have also lost at a game of dice before, no big deal.”
The legionnaires do not seem hostile, they seem a bit puzzled about the situation the end of which they have witnessed. They tell you that they did not come because of the disturbance at the inn, the Legate (the highest ranking officer of the Legion here) required the presence of Reginald at a trial. They walk you back to the Castel Negrorasul, and you go up the central tower in the middle of the citadel. After climbing to the top floor of the tower, you stop in front of a large wooden door, which you assume to be the door of the Legate. The door is slightly open, and as you peek in, you can see Galareon, head bowed down, surrounded by two armed legionnaires, behind him there is the dark-skinned soldier who played dice with Reginald. You can also see Zhorgok, talking very respectfully to an older elf. The presence of the elf commands respect, and you can safely assume that he is the Legate. The symbols of the Legion decorate his clothing, which is simple, but made from fine materials. There is an impressive full plate armor in the corner, and various weapons, military insignia, and military decorations on the wall. As the Legate sees that you have arrived, he waves to the soldiers, and sits down on a chair on a platform. Everybody else remains standing, and you don’t see any other seats.
“Recruit Reginald, step in, they have been waiting for you.” says one of the legionnaires, and signals you to move in. As they look at Hurthrun, they ask him: “You were also there at the boat when the fight took place, right? You can also enter if you want to.”
Put your spoiler here. "crying Reginald" haha **** you dude, I said water.
I had to edit as internet has been ****ed and it did not load what G' said until I posted.
Defeated and tired, Reginald enters with his head hanging low. "He doesn't even notice the shiny full-plate or even if there's an unattended coin purse anywhere, a trope that used to come involuntarily to him. Master Dwarfs words are drowned out by a mind racing"
"There were 100 other men aboard that ship that witnessed that fight, why did they send for me? They're trying to trick me!. They wish to hang me as a slanderer and a tattle-tale.
"Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" "Maggot did not see or hear a thing, ser" - Reginald repeats over and over in his head, as he prepares to open his cursed mouth. He fears that the sight of his teeth alone will be enough to condemn him to the gallows, or worse, Master Dwarf with him.
After all of you enter, the two guards close the door. The Legate starts speaking in a strong, firm voice. You can sense that he is used to giving out commands.
"Long Live the Emperor, Legionnaires! Recruits, my name is Legate Julianus Avidius Qinmenor. I will be brief, our time is short. There are two cases that I have to judge. One is minor, but the other one is rather serious. Let's begin with thaqt one. Recruit Reginald, which one of you is it? Quartermaster Servius Sentius Zhorgok asked me to listen to your testimony in an unfortunate affair that resulted in the death of one recruit and the maiming of another." Now you can see that the halfling, Tener is also there in a corner of the room. "Zhorgok accuses Sextus Avidius Galaeron of being responsible for what happened to the two recruits, Galareon denies the blame and claims that it was an unfortunate accident, due to the fact that these recruits were drunk."The Legate turns towards the two of you. "These are serious charges against an officer that can have serious consequences. Zhorgok asked you to be his witnesses. Reginald, whichever one of you that is, is what Zhorgok claims true? The other recruit may also speak. Be short, and stick to the facts. I will be the one to interpret them." With your passive insight, you get the impression that the Legate is devoting his full attention to you, but also that he is impatient. Reginald, from the corner of your eye you can see Zhorgok looking at you and nodding.
"MAGGOT, DID NOT SEE OR HEAR A THING, SER" - Reginald shouts out unable to look the Legate in the eyes. ""Long Live the Emperor"-Reginald finishes off and salutes the legate.
Hurthrun facepalms HARD and mutters under his breath
“What happened to yer fancy speeches”
Hurthrun then turns to face the legate, bows deeply and then stands to attention
”Permission to speak sir?”
If permission is not given I keep my mouth shut and keep standing at attention
if permission is given I give the full accurate 100% truthful depiction of the story and say that the npc who was worried about me can back up the story. I also would further like to mention that I have no idea what is going on with Reginald but I advocate taking him to the medicus for some TLC which may or may not include a bit of leeching.
" Fancy words, and carefully crafted speeches have no place in this new world we find ourselves in, Master Dwarf. " -Reginald thinks as Hurthrun tells all (or is told to remain silent)
Reginald, roll for Deception (with disadvantage)! If your character is lying, and he knows that he did indeed see something, you need to make a DC 18 Charisma save
The legate looks surprised when Reginald speaks, "Long live the Emperor!" and turns to Servius Zhorgok, who is looking at Reginald utterly dumbfounded: "Zhorgok, is this your idea of a joke? Is this the recruit that you were telling me about? Ridiculous." "I have no idea what happened to him, Sir!" The leagate sees Hurthrun ready to report, and he listens to him attentively. As the dwarf describes what happened, his face darkens, and gives the Whipper a cold glance. "All right, I will send for the human - guards, find him! - but from your testimony, which is similar to that of quartermaster, it seems to be clear what happened. Well done, recruit. He stares at the half-elf and says "Explain yourself, soldier!" You see that he opens his mouth and tries to speak, and first he can't say a word. Then he slowly starts talking, and his eyes go wild - as if this was not what he wanted to say!"I...I... just wanted to teach the recruits a lesson, Sir! They were unfit to be Legionnaires, and they needed to be taught a lesson. I didn... didn..." he finds it difficult to continue "I didn't care whether they would live or die!" His face goes completely pale as he says this. The Legate is furious, he stands up and starts shouting at the Whipper "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T CARE? You sent them to their deaths, you bastard! You will pay for this. You will have to pay however much the church of Tempus needs to restore this halfling's leg. As far as the other recruit is concerned, you will pay to his family. If you don't have the money, you will work in the mines as a slave until you repay the last copper. Also, you get the same punishment you gave them while you work there, ten lashes every morning. Let's see how long YOU last. There is no honor in bullying recruits. They are like children, they need to be taught, but also cared for." He talks to Hurthrun and Zhorgok now: "Well done, soldiers. You did well to report and testify, we need to keep the LEgion clean from scum like this. We take care of our own at the Seventh. I will keep this in mind."He turns towards Reginald"Do you have a ... mental issue, son? Why didn't you stand up for your comrades? Why are you talking about yourself in the third person? Probably your friend is right. Recruit Hurthrun, take him to the temple, and tell them to take a look at him." He looks at the dark-skinned soldier that Reginald was playing dice with "Obviously the human is in no condition to testify against you. But be warned, you are banned from gambling from now on. Also, if I hear anything about a duel, especially with a weak, inexperienced recruit, you will be lashed and sent to the front. Let's see how brave you are if you have to fight the Dark Ones." He looks at the whole room "anything else to add?"

"MAGGOT, DID NOT SEE OR HEAR A THING, SER" - Reginald shouts out unable to look the Legate in the eyes. ""Long Live the Emperor" -Reginald finishes off and salutes the legate.
Hurthrun, roll for Persuasion (wth advantage)!

Then he slowly starts talking, and his eyes go wild - as if this was not what he wanted to say! "I...I... just wanted to teach the recruits a lesson, Sir! I will keep this in mind." He turns towards Reginald "Do you have a ... mental issue, son?
