You return victorious to the town of Knockon Wood, bearing the meat from the giant boar you were hired to kill for your reward. It's a small village that is home to about 200 full time residents who live in town, with several dozen more families in the outlying forest. During “adventure “ season 1 or 2 thousand people annually come temporarily either to seek adventure or to sell goods to adventurers. Knockon Wood is more of a tourist, or adventure town than anything else. It has a variety of shops selling equipment, magical items, and weaponry; many guides who use their experience to guide newer adventurers, for a cost of course; and an impressively opulent tavern known as “ the Flatulent Marionette” used by nearly all the adventurers who pass through. The Mayor of Knockon Wood is a retired old druid named Dream Leaf who is rarely seen.
Shops:
The village has a wide variety of shops for adventuring supplies, weaponry, and normal wares such as clothes and food. To buy anything for sale simply post describing your character going shopping and what you are buying. Then simply deduct the appropriate amount of money from your character sheet and add the item. Honor system will be used here, please don't cheat and add something you didn't buy to your character sheet.
When shopping assume you can find any mundane items that cost 1,000 gp or less, which can all be bought at the price given in the equipment section of the PHB.
Tavern:
the Flatulent Marionette tavern lies at the center of the town. It provides rooms for 1sp a night, and meals for 50cp. It has a tap room spreading 100 feet across, providing plenty of room for talking, eating, preforming, and more. All people all welcome in the tavern, and while weapons are allowed in it tavern brawls are discouraged by a pair of experienced looking dragonborn veterans. It is a great place to discuss or form into adventuring groups. Menu: drink: Mudd (strong, slightly thick whiskey) 1sp per shot, Meade 10cp, Wine 10cp meal : random meat of the day ( freshly kilt by adventurers like yourselves) and tubers and mushrooms 50cp
meat of the night: 1d6 1- beef 2- Chicken 3- Pork 4- Tastes like chicken 5- undetermined 6- Venison
Other Town Features:
Knockon Wood has many other features. It hosts a small observatory, which can be used for a fee of 10 gp, a public library which contains a reasonable amount of scrolls, books, tomes, and strange contraptions. Weapons are not allowed in the library. In addition, the village has a multi-purpose shrine to most of the major deities, along with a few representatives of some crafting guilds. There is also a quickly growing cemetery in clearing just outside of town with an active mortician, for a fee of 50 gp you can reserve a plot and coffin for proper and honored burial complete with service and headstone. Those who die and did not preplan can be interred in the mass grave pit of not left to the wilds to consume.
Finally, Knockon Wood hosts an annual festival/ tournament of skills, including art, marksmanship, duels (not to the death though!) I will create a separate thread for the tourney with more specific rules when than comes around).
Characters should be lvl 3 basic starting equip + 300gp .Have your background on your character sheet, and reveal naturally via RP as appropriate during the adventures. map of the town, ever evolving and will grow with time:
You pull up to the front of the inn with the cart filled to capacity with the hastily quartered meat from the giant boar you and the others slew in the forrest. The other had gone off on their own leaving yourself and the Kobold known as Salt Peet to cash in on the bounty. Peet has a quick discussion with one of the Dragonborn security guards, Ferak Ironscale you think his name was, and he quickly returns.
Salt Peet says to you, “ Mr Ferak says to take it around backs. mr WhittleFingers will meets us to unload”
The Kenku (Chankla) would remain quiet for know as he would push the cart to the back to unload, he was grateful for the work as most people wouldnt usualky hire kenku's since they where seen as a cursed species.
He would whistle out a small nice tone as he continued pushing the cart, due to the previous fight his tunic had a few holes in it, he would get it fixed later, he wondered if salt peet would tell him to get lost when he finished.
When you get around to the back door, Salt Peet is blocking open the door with a rock. “ over here friend Chankla. Mr. WhittleFingers is getting our monies. He says we did a great job and we can have a free night stay.”
Once you bring the cart over he will begin to unload, which will take 1d20 mins to finish. Roll a d20 for me
(Would it be alright in world sense if Chankla was able to talk? Since its just two of us currently it would be better if he could speak)
Chankla would unload the cart in 4 minutes as he made quick work of the project as he looked at Mr.WhittleFingers, He hoped he had done something good for the time being.
(Np . There really is no reason they should not be able to since they can mimic sounds. And other peoples voices. You could just have his voice be different in different situations to match voices he has heard before)
Juggut Whittlefinger returns from the main hall to the kitchen and is surprised at how quickly you tow got the cart unloaded. Over his shoulder he is carrying a marionette that he is currently working on. “ Well done my friends. You are truly efficient.” He says as he hands over a pouch of coins to each of you. 50gp each for the bounty with an additional 200sp each for the meat. “ you two can stay for free tonight and i hope you watch the show,” he says motioning to the marionette. “ tonights show tells the tale of Zargaz the bold vs the harpy queen. Its a classic.” Juggut will show you your room above the main hall and will let you know that other jobs are available posted at the town hall and that some of the town vendors may also have things needed doing as he bids you good day.
I would walk over to Salty Peet as I spoke in a voice recognized by one of the travelers we passed on our path, "Want to go watch the show?" The kenku was clearly excited and wanted to go watch the show as they passed you a drink.
Salt Peet will say, “ yes for sures. I thinks it happens at dinners. You needs to buy supplies? We can see the towns while we waits.”
Peet will pull out a hand scribbled map of the town he made when he first got here and points to a couple of spots he would like to check out until dinner time.
Since chankla hadn't picked up any voices for buildings in the twon he would point at the pot shop, one small thing that people didnt know about chankla was about his fascination over exotic flowers.
“ Okays, we go to pot shop, rock shops and town masters place, then we can watch the show. Mes very goad to have friend Chankla”
You two head to south street, feeling good. The sun is high and on its way towards evening side, a beautiful day in Knockon Wood. You to the front of the pot shop, the sign is hand painted in colorful fashion with the words “ Pot Shop” and images of various potion bottles, plants and herbs and a mortars and pestle. You enter the shop and a gentle bell rings alerting to your presence. From a back room you hear a female voice say, “ be right with ya.”
the shop is 20’x20’ with the room divided in half creating a workshop space in back and the shop proper in front. There is a long counter made of glass containers holding some of the more rare potions and components. Along the left wall can be found well organized paper envelopes filled with dried herbs, flowers and other components required for making potions and salves, along with glass vials, bottles and ceramic jars of varying shapes and sizes. The variety is staggering for such a small town shop. On the right wall are shelves full of salves, potions, and essential oils of all kinds of more common types.
After a moment, a slender elven woman in simple garb and apron emerges from the back room. Her elegant elvish features and golden hair seem even more stunning in the simple dress. “ Welcome to the Pot Shop, my name is Marelle, i am the owner of this humble apothecary. What can aid you fine gentlemen with?”
He noticed there where no exotic flowers in the shop and seemed slightly dissapointed, he would take a look around wonderign if he should use the gold he earned or... try to steal a potion.
Chankla thought that Maralie looked nice, maybe elves where always pretty.
He told himself he wouldn't steal if it was necessary, he would place a minor healing potion on the counter.
in a gruff barbarian voice he would say "ill take this one." This voice seemed to scare chankla himself (backstory content if you want to find out)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Marelle will say, “ the potion of healing is 50gp for 1 or buy 2 for 75gp. These are of the highest quality.”
Salt Peet will ask how much she will offer for the components he collected on the adventure. “Me has 3 venom sacks from big crawlies from wonder forest and 3 singing nettle leaves…how much you gives?”
Marelle will respond, “ wow, 3 venom sacs are truly a great catch. The nettle is fairly common around here, but is valuable for common potions and salves…i can offer you 880 gold for the lot and i will throw in 2 healing potions for your friend as a bonus”
Salt Peet will think about it for a moment, like he s calculating in his head and then promptly agrees to the sale. He will hand the two standard potions of healing to Chankla and hands over the carefully wrapped poison sac and the raw nettle leaves. Marelle hands over a small chest with the gold to Salt Peet and thanks you both for the business. “ Haps we should take these to our room, its heavy” says Peet, as he visibly struggles a little to carry the little chest.
You quickly make your way to your room and you watch as Salt peet pulls out a rusty, old lock from his pocket and places it on the chest. He then pulls some lock pick tools out of his pouch and begin to cast a spell of some sort on the lock. You watch as the key hole transforms into a mouth and a few of the rivets turn into eyes that immediately start scanning the room.
Peet will give it some instructions, “ keep this safes, let no ones get in the box without the passwords…” Seemingly satisfied, he slides the chest under his bed with is backpack and says, “ Okey dokey, lets check out Jem’s Stones store and town boss’s lair.
the reason chankla was so afriad of the voice he made earlier was when he got caught by a barbarian tribe a year ago, He had been walking down a old beaten road when qhen got ambushed, he would wake a few days ealier in the center of the encampment, one of the barbarians would uncuff him from the pole he was put against, "Ill take this one" the barbarian would say, by that they meant that Chankla would be used as prey for the Orc barbarians amusment, they would release chankla into the nearby woods with a rope around his right foot which caused him to stumble.
Kenku where not typically known to be a violent race, they where known to be more inventive and intelligent. With the few minutes he had before the barbarians would chase him down to catch him, he would try to cut off the rope, but unfortunately the rope was thick and tight. Chankla was just like every other kenku, except- he was afraid.
chankla would keep running as fast as he could, he would hear a horn in the distance indicating that the chase was on. He would feel the tug of the rope as he was pulled back towards the barbarians.
He would manage to hang onto a trunk of a tree, he had about 2 minutes before the orcs would reach him.
he would kick his foot and start scrapping the rope off, by some miracle it would become loose, he would re-tie it to the tree trunk.
He would start running away when he found an rusty axe stuck in a tree trunk, He would pull it out and scurry up a nearby tree, he would watch the orcs as they looked around for him. 20 minutes would pass ans the orcs stayed resilient in their search, one that had strayed from the group would get close to Chankla, this is when he snapped, Chankla would quietly jump down from the tree snd bring the axe down on the head of the Orc.
"can i hold it?" He asked in a girls voice he picked up from the market, he would be curious on how it worked. He would then look at your handdrawn map and make a path for the two of us to get to the bosses lair. "Will we have enough time before the show to go there?"
The Kenku would touch the lock a few more times before leaving it alone. He would put the health potions on a shelf in the room, he took a small sip out of one, he didnt care much for the healing factor of them, he enjoyed the taste of them more.
He would then fall back onto his bed and released a loud sigh, he was tired.
