So I put up an interest thread last week with plenty of positive response. So I think I'll try an Eberron campaign. I'm still going through the setting, so it'll be a learning experience together. Here's what I've got for a campaign plan.
Shards of Sharn
It has been four years since the War to End All Wars finished. With the Mournlands now a grey misty void between the other nations, the peace treaty keeps the lands somewhat stable for now. However, flourishing in this time is the city of Sharn, the glimmering gem of mile-high towers atop the Dagger River. While the nations are on edge since the end of the war, the trade and prosperity have only grown for this hub of the world.
However, not everyone is a member of the Upper and Middle city, where there are wonders for everyone. Some of you are in the Lower City, scraping by by doing odd jobs and favours for favours. This day, a small group of unhomed adventurers are waiting for the lightning rail to pass by, as rumour of a box of dragonshards is ripe for the picking for those daring to try...
About the Campaign
My intent is to do this as a pulp action style adventure, with high flying adventure! The group is to be people who will work together (they may have personal agendas beyond their working together, but it'll be a bit more fast-paced story-wise, and I'll try and integrate things for everyone into the campaign. I'm initially looking for 4-6 players for this. If interest is big enough, I may run a second group running around Sharn with other missions. I'm currently experimenting with side-by-side campaigns, but it's still in its early stages.
What do you need to do?
Simple, fill our a character sheet application as in the spoiler below. Please read through the rest of this thread before posting. If you've built in D&D Beyond, feel free to share a link. Please post on this thread, I will not be accepting via PM.
Name: What your character wishes to be identified as.
Race: What race are you picking?
Class: Which class/classes are you starting with?
Background: Which character background are you taking?
Bonus Feat: Which feat did you take?
Backstory: A brief description as to why you are in Sharn and how did you end up on this mission. If you are from a Dragonmark House, why are you now unhomed? If you are using a more exotic race/archetype, try and explain it in your backstory. It only has to be a few sentances, but feel free to elaborate a bit if you want to.
Debt: You owe a debt of some sort, which leads to you taking this job. What sort of debt it this?
Faith: Unlike other worlds, faiths are more towards beliefs rather than a direct deity itself. There are The Silver Flame, The Sovereign Host, The Dark Six, The Blood of Vol, The Path of Light, and Cults of the Dragon below mentioned in the sourcebook.
Common Item: What your common item is
Uncommon Item: What your uncommon item is
Lifestyle: What lifestyle choice you'll be using during downtime.
Phobia: What is your character's largest fear?
Random NPC: Name an NPC and their role within the city of Sharn.
Character Creation Rules
Below are the character creation rules. Please read through them before submitting.
Character Creation Rules:
You may take from any legal sources on D&D Beyond. This will allow for Unearthed Arcana, Critical Role, and Eberron content.
If you wish to play the artificer class, then state so and we'll work something out.
You will start at level 5.
You will have fixed HP.
Encumbrance Rules will be standard. Coins count for encumbrance, so tick that box during creation.
It'll be milestone levelling.
Starting Equipment will be what you get from your class/background, plus one uncommon item, one common item, and 550 gp. If you are taking a weapon/armour as your common/uncommon item, you must pay for the cost of the armour/weapon. For example, if you are getting a +1 longsword, you get the longsword, but pay its initial 15gp from your starting cash.
Build your characters with point-buy... for now ;-)
You may multiclass once during your character's progression.
You will gain a bonus feat to reflect the high-power heroic adventures. You will still have to meet any prerequisites for the feat.
Keep in mind that The Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron is still in playtest. If the race/feat/class/whatever you take from this source changes, it will impact your character. Keep this in mind if you are taking something from this source. This also applies to Unearthed Arcana.
We will also be playing with Hero Points, as in the DMG. Don't worry if you haven't seen these before, it's just even more goodies for the adventurer which I'll explain for the campaign.
Q&A:
If you have a question, check this spoiler before asking in case I've already answered it.
Q) Can I play a dragonmarked character. A) Yes, you may select a dragonmarked race if you so wish. You'll need to think of a reason as to why you are not in the main house and just pop it into your character recruitment.
Q) Can I have an aberrant dragonmark? A) Yes, you may select the aberrant dragonmark feat. Keep in mind though that there may be repercussions based on the discovery of your mark.
Q) Can I play with XYZ homebrew? A) Send a link to the homebrew with your question. I'll look at it and see if it fits within the system.
Q) Will content sharing be available? A) Not initially. I have reached the limit on content sharing. However, I can supply "houseruled" bits to fill in unless we get a kind player to share their content.
Q) How often are you expecting to post? A) I attempt to post as often as I can to keep up with things. I would like to have players who can post once a day during the week is possible. I know people get busy on the weekends and have real life things to deal with, so I'm understanding with people's needs. If you know you won't be able to post for a while, just PM and we can sort things out.
Q) How will you be running combat? A) I generally keep an initiative tracker running on the posts, and describe distances for people to work out how far away things are etc. Check my campaigns in my sig to check how I've run it in my other campaigns.
Q) Are there any houserules I need to know about? A) There probably will be in order to keep things flowing once we start. Once I've got the party, I'll do a little discussion about things.
Q) Will this be run here, or on Discord? A) I intend on running it on here with posts. If there is enough demand for a Discord server, I'll try and setup an OOC thing there, but it's primarily for here.
Q) Wait... are we playing good guys, or bad guys? A) This is a morally grey adventure to begin with. People are playing people who are doing things to survive, rather than for greater good/evil. Just keep in mind that you may want to keep your character's alignment more of a fluid thing than it would be in other campaigns.
Q) How much Eberron lore do I need to know? A) It doesn't matter. I'm not a knowledge buff about Eberron myself, and will be referring to material a lot I assume. If you have extensive knowledge of this campaign, keep in mind I won't know everything so the players may be more knowledgeable. If I do mention something that contradicts what you've read, please take it with a grain of salt, we're not all experts on the campaign :-)
Okay, initial post written. Let's open the floodgates!
(Also totally just noticed this is the 666th thread opened in the PbP board. Let's hope that's not a dark omen...)
Backstory: Alex worked under House Lyrander and their shipments as a sailor on their skyships. He recently was dismissed from duty due to being suspected of smuggling. He has since worked in the Lower Ward, using his bits of magic as ease of convenience.
Debt: He owes a local crime lord a favour who originally set him up after he was kicked out of his work with House Lyrander.
Race: Half-Elf of House Lyrandar (Dragonmark of the Storm)
Class: Storm Sorcerer
Background: House Agent (Lyrandar)
Bonus Feat: Prodigy
Backstory: Fulgar grew up within the company of his fellow brethren within house Lyrandar . Coming from a Middle /Upper level of the house he was always taught respect and how to carry one's self throughout society as well as instilling within him an overwhelming sense of pride towards the house. When Fulgar reached the age of 18 he discovered his gift in storm sorcery and reported it to his family. On the discovery of this fact his family instantly took to training him. Finally at the age of 25 he was sent on a rite of a passage by his family, a sailing journey to Sharn. On the way to Sharn a rival family member sabotaged my ship causing me to be lost at sea, until a merchant ship ended up saving my life from certain death.
Debt: After being saved by the merchants Fulgar swore to them that if they ever needed assistance he would oblige and once he returned to his family he would make sure the merchants are recognised for their deeds
Faith: The Dark Six
Phobia: Fulgar after the sabotage incident has an extreme fear of betrayal and will take any means to prevent it, When it occurs Fulgar makes sure a message is sent to stop future occurances
Random NPC: Taris the Merchant : Taris was the man that saved Fulgar from death and the man who has been giving him work and accommodation since. Taris is a Sea Elf with a jolly attitude and tends to use sarcasm when he sees silly mistakes. Taris is an expert sailor and is often called to deliver for large companies due to his reputation.
Backstory: Zaheira dimly remembers her parents, but was lost to them when she was a small child. She was raised to be a brilliant thief by Ershkin, a gnomish thief and master of a little person's thieves' guild. (Children, gnomes, halflings) She struck out on her own when she grew tall, but grows tired of the petty crime she's dealt with so far, and longs to make a really big score and retire.
Debt: She owes a debt to Harrison, a memeber of the City Watch who saved her life after a mission gone bad, but didn't turn her in.
Faith: The Sovereign Host, Olladra and Kol Korran in particular.
I'd like to join this. I'll edit this post with my character info when I'm done working out the finer details of the character.
Name: Eldin
Race: Tiefling
Class: Rogue 3 (Arcane Trickster)/ Ranger 2
Background: Urchin
Bonus Feat: Infernal Constitution
Backstory: Eldin was abandoned at an orphanage as baby so he doesn't remember his parents. When he turned 18, he became a mercenary to earn his bread.
Debt: He is indebted to the high elf who raised him in the orphanage. If she asked Eldin to do something, he would try is very best to do it.
Faith: The Sovereign Host (Sovereign of World and Wealth)
Common Item: Breastplate (paid for)
Uncommon Item: Shield + 1.
Lifestyle: Modest
Phobia: Fear of Fanaticism.
Random NPC: Alicia Lionheart, a human girl Eldin grew up with at the orphanage. She is now a paladin of law and justice. Tends to view morality as black and white.
Backstory: The end of the War got Kerthak suddenly without an emeny to fight, without a unit to rely on, without a captain to follow into battle. The rest of his brothers that survived the war dispersed throught the four winds, looking for a destiny and a porpouse for themselves. Kerthak has been moving from village ot village, selling his services since then, he hasn’t found a group of people wich he finds himself comfortable, and who he can trust again and call it his unit. He misses the days when all was easier and one knew who was the enemy and what the mission was. Perhaps in this city, with its great spires that defy the very skies he could find what he is looking for.
Debt: He is in debt with an artificer who helped him after its last mission. He is not a bad guy, but he is kind of a freak. His name is Viktor and if you had seen Critical Role... no more words needed ;)
Faith: Not a particular praying beign, he feels that the Silver Flame is the closest to him as he has served with clerics of it during the War.
Uncommon Item: Shield+1
Common Item: Armblade longsword.
Lifestyle: Modest
Phobia: Deep water
Random NPC: Vrailin Lyrandar, half-elf dragonmarked from house Lyrandar who was the captain of the small airship that brought him here. He bought his passage to act as guard and his presence was well justified when the airship was attacked a couple of times during their journey.

( I was about to post the half-elf Lyyrandar dragonmarked sorcercer of the storm but there is already one ;) )
Think your link is broken. If you could also use the same format as the others. If you are trying to link your character sheet, click your character's portrait on View mode, and select "Shareable Link".
Backstory: Life isn't easy in Sharn, but Carrick always had the necessary skills to survive. A veteran of the war, Carrick knew how to make the best of his resources, how to avoid being seen, and how to kill someone when the situation called for it. Even after the war ended, he would find that those skills would later be very helpful in staying alive in the less savory parts of Sharn. Carrick's talent with stealth and the blade would ensure that he would never go hungry or be in the cold, and while he isn't looking for one big score that will set him up for life, he wouldn't be opposed to doing a job that promises to be reasonably exciting.
Debt: Carrick needs to repay a blacksmith who forged Mithral Splint Armor for him, so that he can be but not make a ton of noise while he's doing a job.
Faith: The Dark Six
Uncommon Item: Mithril Splint
Common Item: Poisoners Kit
Lifestyle: Comfortable
Phobia: Tight spaces
Random NPC: Velvet Vesper, prettiest courtesan in Sharn. She's provided Carrick with information about jobs that could be particularly profitable for him and has warned him when someone was coming after him. She might be one of the few people that he would call a friend.
Background: House Agent (Vadalis) this is of course flexible to fit the story as needed since Eberron is all new to me
Bonus Feat: Mobile
Companion: I'm still trying to determine if he wants an awakened shrub, a giant badger, or something else
Backstory: Erthor isn’t really unhomed – he’s from House Vadalis, but was sent to the Lower City, under the guise of being unhomed in an effort to track down exotic beasts and those who might deal in them without drawing attention to the House and their magebreeding. But because of the nature of this assignment – he has been cut off from all resources from the house outside the occasional contact when he finds something that may interest the Druids of House Vadalis, including dragonshard focus items. So he does odd jobs etc to still make ends meet and keep a place for him to ‘rest’. Being use to just following orders in the war Erthor has found some sense of structure and command he was accustomed to during the war. Conditions in the Lower City can sometimes be miles above conditions on the battlefield and has no desire for the finer things in life that the softies tend to covet.
Debt: Vadalis gave him purpose after the war when he was found just wandering aimlessly around the world. He owes them his life for the stability they have returned to him and so he’s content to do the odd jobs asked of him by the house.
Lifestyle: Squalid – he lacks the desire for creature comforts the other races love
Phobia: Autophobia – the fear of being alone or isolated
Random NPC: Kelvhan Kriscan, an elf at one of the local vendors who deals in the rare and exotic and sometimes hard to find items and information....for a price
Backstory: While robbing a monastery he was caught and lived with the Monks there as punishment and to be rehabilitated, leaving his rogue lifestyle behind and becoming more aligned with Monk traditions meditation and freeing himself of worldly possessions. Although he still struggles with dealings from his past life.
Debt: I need funds to pay for the information that I need it's the only way.
Faith: The Path of Light
Common Item: 2 Daggers +1 to hit Normal Damage (Duel Wielding: no +1 bonus on off-handed attack)
Uncommon Item: Boots of Elvenkind (If you allow)
Lifestyle: Modest.
Phobia: claustrophobia
Random NPC: Winnifred "Winnie" Mae - Local Bar owner in the upper areas of the lower city - a full elf orphan who had her ears cut as a child by the humans who took her in. (Named by them also)

Name: Hayden Cinderthrone
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline)
Bonus Feat: Would chose elemental adept (Fire), but don't have access to PHB.
Background: Criminal
Backstory: Child of an elven noble and a human servant, Hayden Cinderthrone grew up an outcast, shunned by humans and elves alike for his mixed blood. While initially only stealing to survive, The young Hayden grew to enjoy the cathartic feeling of stealing from those who looked down on him. His draconic bloodline only served to make him more adept and daring at his chosen profession. Everything changed when he attempted to steal from his father. The noble denounced his son, calling him a traitor, a monster, and an embarrassment. Overcome with fury, Hayden unleashed his magic, burning the noble along with three of his guards. The Elven nobility hunted him relentlessly for several years thereafter, forcing him to flee his homeland. He lived in Thronehold for a time, working for local crime syndicates. However, Clashes with both the law and his employers once again made him flee. Now he's a drifter, doing shady jobs for quick cash. Deep down, he wants to atone and become an honest man. However, his explosive temper and compulsion to steal do not help matters. He has a long-term goal of gathering allies, returning to Thronehold, and killing his former boss. He's a bit iffy on how, but he's confident that he'll eventually be able to pull it off.
Debt: To the old monk who told him he could be redeemed.
Backstory:As a scholar working on subjects which are considered taboo for many, Arcano always read records about Undyings leading the Elves. Pursuing his ambitions, he started digging information in the libraries of Morgrave University, yet never got accepted as a scholar. Instead, to make a living, Arcano was occationally visiting local graveyards to provide cheap workforce for locals using the bones of deceaced , renting them for the use of those who can pay the price as cheap labor.
Arcano payed too much price for the great library, and made a big debt, which led him to seek more opportunities to pay what he owes. He believes that while out adventuring, he may uncover secrets which he was looking for all his life.
Debt: Arcao owes a big debt to the Great Library of Morgrave University.
Backstory: Priest was created for a single purpose. To spread the word of The Silver Flame — specifically the subsect of the religion, The Servants of the Pure Flame. Shortly after his inception, and before his indoctrination could be completed, his creator was killed during a village raid. Left without a tutor, Priest was left to search out members of his religion, but few would have him, based solely because of the man who made him.
He spends his days now teaching others what he does know of The Silver Flame and their doctrines, always searching for more knowledge about The Servants of the Pure Flame, and of the man who made him, whom he calls father.
Debt: During his most recent say at “The Wicked Wand”, a local hostel, Priest’s message of faith angered a veteran of The Last War such that the encounter came to blows. The common room of the inn was throughly destroyed, but more importantly, a stash of dreamlily behind the counter was smashed. The Boromar Clan happened to own the establishment, and suggested that if Priest couldn’t cover the costs of renovation, he might find his days of helping the less fortunate come to a close sooner than he’d like.
Faith: A priest of The Silver Flame, though he isn't a true member of the organization, and isn't fully indoctrinated with the religions beliefs.
Random NPC: Myssia Suvius; the young gnome daughter of Sanadal Suvius, Priest’s maker.
I've only been a member of one PbP game before, and it fizzled out due to DM loss. I'm eager for another shot at it though! I've also got a Master Tier sub and would be more than glad to enable content sharing for the group if anyone's so inclined. I have a copy of the PHB, MM, DMG and Xanathar's.
If we have Too many sorcerers, I could roll up a warlock. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the specific pact I'd enjoy the most (I had the whole idea for a quori-based Great Old One warlock).
Just keep in mind that my post (#2) is just an example one. Beyond that, people can apply as sorcerers. Based on if this recruitment is popular enough, there may be multiple groups so sorcerers can be split into the different groups to allow for diversity in the parties still.
Don't feel you have to change your character if you don't want to. Put down which character you would like to play, don't worry about what others have put. 5e isn't as balance-centric as prior editions, so there can be more than one person in a party with the same class and there be completely different effective roles for them.
Kinda one for others too, but feel free to edit and change your characters up until the deadline. If you want to change your mind, feel free. I'm looking over it as I go but won't make any decisions until after I've closed the thread.
RECRUITMENT IS CURRENTLY CLOSED!

Name: Kerthak
Race: Warforged (juggernaut)
Class: Fighter
Background: Mercenary Veteran
Bonus Feat: Shield Master

Name: Carrick
Race: Human (Mark of Sentinel)
Class: Fighter 5
Background: Criminal
Bonus Feat: Lucky

Xenophon: Topaz Dragonborn Fighter (ixi's Dragon of Icespire Peak)
More
Oh my bad - already failing at this hehe
Name: 3R-TH0R aka Erthor
Race: Warforged Skirmisher
Class: Beast Master Ranger
Common Item: Armblade (Shortsword) (left hand)
Uncommon Item: Shortsword +1 (right hand)
Lifestyle: Squalid – he lacks the desire for creature comforts the other races love
Phobia: Autophobia – the fear of being alone or isolated
Random NPC: Kelvhan Kriscan, an elf at one of the local vendors who deals in the rare and exotic and sometimes hard to find items and information....for a price

Name: Fiven
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Monk / Rogue
Background: Criminal
Bonus Feat: Not sure yet

Faith: The sovereign host.
Common Item: Thieves' Tools or Ruby of the War Mage (Need access to Xanathar's)
Uncommon item: Ring of Water Walking

Name:Arcano Baghmah
Race: Variant Human
Class: Wizard 5 (Necromany)
Background: Sage
Bonus Feat: Keen Mind
Backstory:As a scholar working on subjects which are considered taboo for many, Arcano always read records about Undyings leading the Elves. Pursuing his ambitions, he started digging information in the libraries of Morgrave University, yet never got accepted as a scholar. Instead, to make a living, Arcano was occationally visiting local graveyards to provide cheap workforce for locals using the bones of deceaced , renting them for the use of those who can pay the price as cheap labor.
Debt: Arcao owes a big debt to the Great Library of Morgrave University.
Faith: The Blood of Vol
Common Item: Hat of Wizardry
Uncommon Item: Wand of Magic Missiles
Lifestyle: Comfortable
Phobia: Drowning
Random NPC: Heiris, the Aereni Elf Scholar, working on Aereni Elf History and Tradition
May start with/without his "cheap labor" depending on DM choice.
Name: Priest
Race: Warforged
Class: Paladin
Background: Acolyte
Bonus Feat: Skilled (Perception, Investigation, Performance)
Common Item: Cloak of Billowing
Uncommon Item: Longsword, +1
Lifestyle: Poor
Phobia: Ornithophobia (fear of birds)
Relleonard Harrowveil: Lv1 Tiefling Paladin - Hermes' Curse of Strahd PbP | Hunhow the Golden: Lv1 Gold Dragonborn Barbarian - Sunless Citadel PbP | Mikhael Frostmoon: Lv2 Half-Elf Sorcerer (Draconic) - Rescue at Rivenroar PbP | Conway Dredmor: Lv3 Half-Elf Ranger (Hunter) - Crypt of the Elf King PbP. | Hayden Cinderthrone: Lv5 Half-Elf Sorcerer (Draconic) - Trial By Fire PbP | Edric the Nightwalker: Lv5 Tiefling Warlock (The Great Old One) - Shards of Sharn Group A |
I'm also happy to change into something like a rogue or a bard if it helps
@Nederic
Just keep in mind that my post (#2) is just an example one. Beyond that, people can apply as sorcerers. Based on if this recruitment is popular enough, there may be multiple groups so sorcerers can be split into the different groups to allow for diversity in the parties still.
@Crashlander16
Don't feel you have to change your character if you don't want to. Put down which character you would like to play, don't worry about what others have put. 5e isn't as balance-centric as prior editions, so there can be more than one person in a party with the same class and there be completely different effective roles for them.
@Kuastro
If you are trying to tooltip magical items, use [ magicitem ] (without the spaces).
@ZulkRS
Kinda one for others too, but feel free to edit and change your characters up until the deadline. If you want to change your mind, feel free. I'm looking over it as I go but won't make any decisions until after I've closed the thread.
