The Kingdom of Valemark has expanded south rapidly. Bringing the border of civilization right to the edge of Darkleaf Forest. The outlying villages live in fear of the forest's denizens; monsters, cruel fey, orc raiders, militant elves, and far more supernatural terrors.
Adventurers, like any other professional, must go where the work is and now the work is in Southern Valemark. The promise of lucrative monster contracts isn't the only thing that has lured you and your companions to the south, tales of an ancient elven crypt, filled to the brim with rich burial treasure, has piqued your interest.
The Anguis River starts high in the north and winds its way through Valemark right into the city of Alandale. From here it is a mere two-day journey to the edge of Darkleaf Forest and the villages that populate the forest border.
It's an overcast spring morning as your ferry passes under the rough hewn stone walls of Alandale and the ripe stink of the city assaults your senses. You and your companions step off the ferry onto the docks that line the commercial district of the city. Swarthy dock-workers, foremen, sailors, and rich merchants crowd the streets, going about the business of the day. Caravels loaded with goods for import and export sail in and out of the city. It's an overcast spring morning and Alandale smells like it always does, like opportunity.
As soon as you step off the ferry a crowd of street urchins buzzes around you and the other passengers, they start yelling shrilly, asking you if you need a guide, they all clamor, claiming to know where the best stables, blacksmiths, and taverns can be found.
Introduce your character give us a description, and then go find some adventurer-work.
A tall, tan-skinned half-elf with shoulder-length brown hair, an unkempt beard, and piercing green eyes surveys the mass of urchins. A pair of shortswords hang from his belt and a longbow is slung across his chest. A necklace adorned with the fangs of terrible and rare beasts hangs from his neck. "Is there a place where a hunter of beasts such as myself could find employment? A guild of explorers? I'm new in town as you can tell."

Gimdir Loderr is a thick, stocky muscled dwarf with a unkept hair and beard that foreshadows an unpredictability to his character. His hands are heavily calloused and not just from the use of battleaxe or shield that he carries. The "ting - ting" of the smith hammers draws his gaze and a small smile appears briefly. Other than a sheathe of javelins across his pack, he does not wear any armor.
"Listen up lads... there be two things I do well, and I'm not here to smith today. Where be the adventuring work!?"
Following suite with the other adventurers Kreeng steps off the ferry. The unblinking eye symbol of Gruumsh in the center of his chain mail is the first thing that attract attention. The only fleshy part that is visible is the greyish bald half orc head. Trying to ease drop on the other adventurers the half orc looks at his surroundings of the new city.
One of the more willful urchins pushes aside his fellows and leads you all out of the docks. Your self appointed urchin city guide squeaks out "don't you fret misters, Jimmy knows this city like he knows the back of his own hands. Nothing here escapes him, every rain barrel, and slum is known to ol' Jimmy. Since slayers work is what you'll be wanting then slayer's work is what Jimmy will show you"
Jimmy leads you through streets narrow and wide, over bridges, and walkways. The docks hug close to the river snaking through the city, overhanging the water with piers and wooden walkways. Tall cranes pick up goods from the ships and unload them dockside where they are loaded into carts and taken into warehouses.
The buildings away from the docks use large bricks made from a rough red stone for the first floor. The higher floors all slightly overhang the street and are made using simple timber frames, wattle and daub, and are whitewashed. The sky line is dotted with chimneys pumping out smoke. In the distance atop a rocky hill a fortress overlooks the city, bright banners snap sharply atop it's many towers. Jimmy delivers a running commentary as you go along, pointing out parts of the city."Over there is Noble Hill, the Duke lives there. Up past Tanner's Row you'll find the Alchemist Quarter, its been rebuilt five times already. The Royal Library is right past Temple Street, they're very choosy about who they let in mind you"
The streets are packed with humanoids, carts, and draft animals, all going to and fro. Running about the street are many small creatures, gnomes, sprites, goblins, cleaning up the streets, shoveling up manure, sweeping away debris. Jimmy gives one of the gnomes a strong kick, sending it sprawling on the cobblestones, he calls after it "out of the way gutter-fairy, Jimmy has places to be"
Jimmy leads you all to a large circular plaza, a fountain dominates the center topped with a marble statue of a knight riding a griffon. Tradesmen crowd the edge of the plaza selling all manner of wares from ramshackle carts. Street magicians and fortune tellers ply their trades from hastily raised tents. A troop of twelve city guards march past carrying halberds, and shields.
Jimmy shows you a forty foot long notice board at one end of the plaza, "when folk with coin need something done it'll end up here". You peruse the notice board, most of it is rather boring, merchants looking for trading partners, one silver piece bounties for giant rat heads, craftsmen advertising their trade.

A REWARD OF 500 SILVER COINS TO THE ONE WHO CAN END THE KILLINGS
Jimmy sticks out his grubby hand for a coin and looks at each of you expectantly.
Gimdir fishes out a silver coin and gives it to Jimmy. When Jimmy takes a moment to look at it, Gimdir gives Jimmy a strong kick to send him sprawling to the ground. "Outta the way, urchin. Gimdir gots contracts to choose!"
After a brief pause, Gimdir will bend over to look Jimmy directly in the eye and follow up, "Like it much?"
Looking at the others, Gimdir proposes, "3000 silver for the taking on this board. Alone we'd probably be able to finish one before needing to recover. But together we could do all three of them in short order. How bout we tackle this as a group and split the pot?"
The Half-Elf gives a pair of silver coins to the street urchin before turning to Gimdir. "It would be more effective to work as a unit. But we should start with the southford killings. Four lives have already been lost, as opposed to cattle or goods. The name's Conway Dredmor."

One hex is 6 miles. Greyed out hexes are unexplored forest. Only major cities/villages are marked, plenty of small farmsteads in-between.
Southford is 50 miles south of Alandale. At a normal travel pace the journey would take two full days of travel (-2 rations), at a fast pace you could arrive at noon tomorrow(-1 ration). If you want some security on your journey you could get passage on a coach, 15sp passenger, coach travels at fast pace. You could also buy passage on a ferry for 4gp each, the journey by ferry would get you into Southford 2 hours before sunset today.
I'll buy a map. "Should we travel by coach, by foot, or by water? If we're strapped for cash we can walk, but if you're feeling wealthy we could go by boat. I'd prefer to get there as quickly as possible, but i don't want to force anyone else."
