A Level 14 Dungeon Crawl for Experienced and Masochistic Players
EDIT: The first party began their journey so we're currently full. People will leave so more spots will open. Leave your application in this thread and you might (and probably will) be chosen in the nearby future.
What is the Tomb Of Horrors?
Tomb of Horrors is an adventure module written by Gary Gygax for the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) role-playing game. It was originally written for and used at the 1975 Origins 1 convention. Gygax designed the adventure both to challenge the skill of expert players in his own campaign, and to test players who boasted of having mighty player characters able to best any challenge. The module, coded S1, was the first in the S-series, or special series of modules. Several versions of the adventure have been published, the first in 1978, and the most recent, for the fifth edition of D&D, in 2017 as one of the included adventures in Tales from the Yawning Portal. The module also served as the basis for a novel published in 2002.
What should you expect?
A deadly dungeon, full with traps and instant deaths. Your characters will die, multiple times. This is not an adventure intended to role-play and develop your characters. It's unforgiving, hard, and many players won't find it fun, be aware of that. There are many riddles and TPKs without any kind of save. Most of the mechanics are made to instakill the players. It will be a test of endurance, but getting to the end will be rewarding.
What about the characters?
You'll need to create one level 14 character. Any manual will do, but no UA or unofficial content (also the main manuals i'm expert with are PHB and Xanathar's so it'd be better if you stick to those. Point buy or standard array. Fixed health, and no leveling up. Each one of you will get an uncommon magical item of your choice (the final decision will be left to me tho). As I mentioned before you're character will probably die, so have one as a backup if you intend playing after your first char is dead. Submissions for the characters will start immediately (and they will be closed on the 10th). Consider that people might leave after their first death so if you submitted an application during this period you might be considered to enter the game.
Timezones and Attendance
I live in Europe (UTC +1) so I will be mostly posting during daytime. Expect a couple of posts a day, but not each day. This will be expected from you as well. The game will start on the 11th of August.
Other Info
This is my first PbP campaign, but I have a fairly big DMing background. The adventure will be mostly ran RAW and as-written, so if its up to you not to read anything from the module. If there's evidence that someone knows the Tomb he will be kicked. Please come blind (in a metaphorical sense of course :^)). I'm new to DnDBeyond as well so the start will be a little slow and rough but I hope to improve. The lenght of this adventure is supposed to be ~6 hours so I'm expecting to end this in a month or so.
Please note that this is an adventure for EXPERIENCED players. If you're a new player and come without any experience you'll probably end up frustrated and angry. Don't tell me I didn't tell you.
I suppose I can enlist into the suicide squad should people want a fresh bit of meat to chew on.
Name: Lumiere
Character Sheet: ddb.ac/characters/4492475/Gsdz9s
A bit about your character (OOC): A sun soul monk. Her path is to attempt to shed the light of goodness to the land, and where else better than the darkest and most notorious dungeon to attempt to shed it?
What's your experience with DnD: I've run a decent amount of D&D (see my extended sig for my PbP history) and joined the hobby during the end few months of 3.5.
Question: how are you dealing with starting equipment? There are recommendations in the DMG for characters starting above a certain level to start with additional gold and some magical items.
A bit about your character (OOC): A Kensai monk weapon master (dual wield long swords) with 6 levels of Battlemaster Figther. He's all about training body and mind, and testing himself against the greatest challenges he can find.
What's your experience with DnD: I've been playing D&D and variants for years. D&D 3.5, Black Company, Conan, Shadowrun, TNMT, and so on. I've recently gotten back in to D&D with 5e because of Critical Role. I'm participating in many PbP games here at DnDBeyond (see sig), and I am DM'ing my first module for RL friends (Lost Mine of Phandelver). I have a general solid understanding of the mechanics.
A bit about your character (OOC): A roguish Assassin in it for the gold. While he won't straight up stab you in the back, and has a set code of honor, the money and the job come first and everything else comes after.
What's your experience with D&D: I've been D&Ding for about 4-5 years now, starting with 5th edition. While I don't have to much in game experience, I have a solid understanding of the mechanics gained by too many hours spent reading the manuals over and over again.
(A few notes: The assassin subclass looks slightly different, as I haven't purchased the PH on DDB. However, I do own a physical copy of the PH, and made a homebrew subclass to use as a substitution. I live in America, but I'm generally pretty able to keep up with posts.)
Currently playing in: Quest for the Shunned City, Coliseum of Conquest, DragonDenn's Dragonlords, Shipwrecked on Fugue, Tomb of Annihilation, Razor's Lost Mine of Phandelver, The Lost Kenku & One Grung Above
Currently DMing: Princes of the Apocalypse, Out of the Abyss, Coliseum of Conquest—The Arena (Sometimes)

The starting gold is 6250gp. I don't think you'll really need it tho. As for magical items, it's written in the main post. You can choose any uncommon magical item to get, but i'll have the right to ask you to change it.
A bit about your character (OOC): Kol was raised in the northern wilderness of Icewind Dale as a member of one of the Uthgardt Tribes. He is keen to face down any challenge.
What's your experience with DnD: I've previously played and DMed Pathfinder for around 5 years. I've taken up playing and DMing D&D 5E around 6 months ago and I'm loving it so far.

A bit about character (OOC): Growing up on the wrong side of town, Jerigg began his career as an enforcer and sometime second story man. One night while attempting to steal from an Elven "witch" he was caught literally red-handed. "You poor thing, you are far, far too big to be a thief." Instead of turning him into a toad as he feared, she took him in and taught him the ways of the ancients. Years later, he had a drastic change of heart and became a champion of the light.
What's your experience with DnD: I'm an old old player from long long ago. Began playing in the 70's with the original red box and blue boxes. Played 2nd, 3.5, life happened so didn't play 4th edition.

Thanks. I chose the lantern of revealing since it seems to fit the character concept. Beyond that, the main reason I ask is the follow-up. Can we buy items from the PHB with the cash? I know grabbing a couple of potion of healings would be great, and maybe grabbing a couple of extra bits and bobs.
A bit about your characters (OOC): Ubogri and Boriglar are twins. When they were old enough to leave their parents, Boriglar, who had always loved drawing and looking at maps, pursued a cartographer's guild membership. His father and grandfather were members, so becoming a member was almost guaranteed out of respect. The fact that Boriglar is fairly unintelligent has relegated him to being an errand boy. He understands the tools of the trade and can draw simple maps, but errors generally abound. The guild humors him and puts him to use as physical labor as much as possible because he loves the guild and works hard. He is most handy as protection for guild members who need to venture into dangerous territory. Ubogri has never appreciated honest work. As soon as he could, he began associating with a shady group and turned to a life of crime. He is just as unintelligent as his brother, but he makes up for it in wisdom. He sometimes works alone, but generally works in groups, and switches groups often to not develop close bonds with those who he sometimes has to stab in the back to get the most out of a job. Very recently, he heard through his sources about a group of tomb raiders being put together and thought the job sounded good. Feeling a wave of nostalgia, he contacted Boriglar and asked him to join him on this adventure (it being less shady, but more dangerous). His motives are somewhat noble; he does miss his brother, who he has always gotten along well with. But he has led his brother to believe a little more heart is going into this invitation than really is. Mainly, Ubogri would like more muscle, and he knows Boriglar can deliver. Unfortunately, when the campaign begins, Boriglar will not yet have arrived, but the group wants to go ahead in. Ubogri will proceed, assuming his brother will catch up. When Ubogri dies, Boriglar will (tragically) arrive.

Yes, you can buy some items as long they're not Very Rare (and only a limited number of rare ones, at your discretion)
A bit about your character (OOC): Carmythe is Falmo's employer. He's a shady figure at the head of one of the most prominent assassin guilds. He rose to power partially through ruthless tactics and "convenient accidents," and partially through the power given to him by a pact made with a powerful devil. He is known as the Scarred due to the multitude of scars covering one side of his face, caused by a failed attack from a wizardly rival.

What's your experience with DnD Playing since 4th Ed, was on hiatus for a couple of years, as recently decided to play again.
Mace McKell (sometimes pronounced McKill) is a veteran of a hundred campaigns. After being exiled from his band of sellswords for a crime he didn't commit, he took to the adventuring life as a soldier of fortune. His toughness and masculinity is matched only by his wits, and a certain predatory monster that killed his whole squad on mission to the feywild. He is always concerned with "the plan," and he knows that, when a team works together, anything is possible. His most recent job is a tough one, but it should pay well: kill Acererak for his client and get out with the loot. After polishing his trusty morningstar and brushing up with some manuals on squad based dungeon tactics, he's ready to begin.
Vesth Hammerhall is a good hearted priest who left her monastery to put her magic to good use helping out the common people. Her openness to others and their faiths lead her down many paths, including making a pact with the Fiend. She allows the many sources of magic withing her to coexist, and would prefer to redeem or spare enemies rather than kill them. This doesn't stop her from doing what she needs to protect her "family," and she will kill out of necessity (though never vengeance). She heard about the lethality of the legendary Tomb of Horrors, and is willing to risk her life if it means saving the fools who enter. That said, she has no care for gold and glory, and she will cast drag her companions out for their own safety if she needs to.
I mostly DM, but I just bought Tales from the Yawning Portal and I know I will be running the ToH soon. I would like to give it a shot as a player first, not knowing anything except its reputation. I'm okay with dying a lot. The longest I've ever kept a character was for two and a half adventures, and I find the Dark Souls style "try, die, repeat" to be fun and rewarding. I like the role playing part of the game the most, so I'm probably going to focus on that even when I know my characters are not long for the world.
On my experience, I've run a lot of 4e and I'm slowly getting into 5e (hence TftYP). I did run 4e's Return to the Tomb of Horrors, but the campaign fizzled quickly after the first adventure.
So i bought a Flame Tongue Greatsword, but since there is no definitive pricing on magical items in the rules( it only says for rare item 501-5000gp) i was going on a limp and though that a rare sword would be 5000, so now if its not then please let me know.
Welcome to the Tomb, now DIE.

FYI, I'm out of town for 24 hours. If my character Jared is chosen, my first post won't be until Sunday evening.
Thanks for the submissions. I will let you know before tomorrow if you've been chosen and I'll start the campaign!
