One other thing (which I just saw in another PbP post by Kyleh2486 and am shamelessly liberating): For the structure of posts please try to use the following:
1) Character first name on the first line, or start the description of your action with it.. (so in the example below: "Dori dashes towards the gap ... ")
2) Description of your actions and or whatever you're doing. Use quotes for speech and italics for thoughts. Try to use links for spells/abilities.
Example: I dash toward gap in the floor and jump. This isn’t going to be good. Just prior to jumping, I cast light on my quarterstaff. As I land, I take a swing at the guard with my quarterstaff. “You killed my father!”
3) Any skill, attack and/or damage rolls using the forum dice roller.
Example: Attack: 21 Advantage or Disadvantage: 22 Damage: 7 type of damage
Example: Stealth: 8
4) As mentioned before, any OOC text, bold+italics.
Waterdeep, City of Splendor, is the grandest metropolis of the sword coast. Waterdeep is an ancient city, resting on the site of what was once the majestic Elven city of Aelinthaldaar. Most of the elves left Aelinthaldaar in the Retreat, when the emperor of the elves commanded a mass exodus from Faerun to the isle of Evermeet. Some elves defied the order and remained only to enter into a conflict with the dwarven civilization that resided under the city. This conflict left the city razed to the ground and abandoned, where it was later discovered and re-settled by humans as Waterdeep.
Having since grown to a population of over 130,000 citizens, Waterdeep is bustling metropolis that can cater to nearly every need. It is a favourable location for adventurers, as many of the citizens are former adventurers themselves. As a result the city is littered with a large number of vendors, artisans and shops that support this lifestyle.
Winter has fallen on the city. Winters are harsh here and this one is no exception. Snow piles up around the city and ice fills the harbour. The gates to the city are sealed for the season, which grinds trade to a halt and generally prevents newcomers from entering. Citizens willing to brave the cold still gather in local taverns and festhalls, but few venture outside the city walls.
You are a group of fledgling adventurers that have found your way together through performing tasks and filling various contracts in the city. Sariel is from Waterdeep, but the rest of have arrived from other parts of the world through different circumstances to try and find a home in the city. Given that it's winter, you have all been here for at least a few weeks. (Feel free to flesh this out more if any of you want to).
As does any good adventure, this story begins in a tavern. The Yawning Portal - a famous Inn and Tavern located in the Castle Ward of Waterdeep is a large, busy tavern. Music plays, barmaids serve drinks and food, and a large, red-headed former adventurer named Durnan tends the bar.
You sit around a sturdy wooden table lit by a brightly burning candle and littered with plates cleared of food and half-drained tankards. The sounds of gamblers yelling and drunken adventurers singing bawdy songs nearly drown out the off-key strumming of a young bard three tables over.
Having become regulars at the portal in recent months you have become familiar with other citizens who frequent this establishment. Below is a selection of friendly faces usually found in the portal. You each may select any one of them as an existing contact that you have come to know and trust. They may be of assistance in the future. (Please let me know via PM who you select)
Your conversation is eclipsed by a shout: “Ya pig! Like killin’ me mates, does ya?” Then a seven-foot-tall half-orc is hit by a wild, swinging punch from a male human whose shaved head is covered with eye-shaped tattoos. Four other humans stand behind him, ready to jump into the fray. The half-orc cracks her knuckles, roars, and leaps at the tattooed figure — but before you can see if blood is drawn, a crowd of spectators clusters around the brawl. What do you do?
“We can’t let the weather keep us down. Our next challenge awaits, friends.” Dori slams down his empty tankard against the table, hoping to catch the attention of Bonnie in the process, but with the noise of the tavern he was sure it was most likely drowned out. The Goliath sat hunkered over, trying to take up as little space as possible. The cold and snow didn’t phase him in the slightest, but he had grown to enjoy the company of the others that sat at the table with him. “The last job paid well, but was too easy. If we are to truly grow, we must...” The sudden sound of shouts and swears, followed by a gathering of the other patrons catches Dori’s attention as he pushes himself from the table and stands to his full height, looking over the crowd. “A fight has broken out and we are not in the center of it!?“ Moving closer toward the fight and pushing the spectators out of his way if need be. “It best be a fair fight or Dori “RockCrusher” Moogri will get involved. Please don’t be a fair fight!”
As he starts to push his way through the crowd they close around him, which would make him hard to see if he didn't stand a clean 16" above everyone else in the bar. Do the rest of you follow?
As Gargan stands up from the table he says to Varis “I like the cold, it brings stillness and clarity. Much unlike this chaos!”
As he reaches his full height the dragon born adjusts his robes to make sure they are tight about him and looks around the crowd taking it all in and looking for anything of note that he might be wary of while all eyes are in one direction.
Varis: That was definitely Yagra, but even from the table you can't see her (which is odd because she's almost as tall as Dori). You do see 4 others towards the center of the crowd that each have a symbol emblazoned on their clothes - a small circle with 10 branches sticking out around it. You recognize it as a symbol of the Xanathar Guild - which isn't an official guild at all but more of a gang. You also recall that Yagra talking about recently doing some work for what is probably considered their most direct opposing faction, the Zhentarim. Chances are she caused them some pain and they are trying to return the favour.
Gargan: The Portal is a big place with 3 floors, circled around a huge stone well in the center that disappears into darkness. Despite the weather it's also fairly busy. As you survey the room you can see that although there is a crowd around the commotion, most people are not getting involved. Many people aren't paying attention but you can see a few with a little apprehension on their faces, glancing nervously out the windows as if they're looking for something. A couple even get up and run out the door as if they don't want to have anything to do with the events transpiring.
I'll wait for others to catch up before going further with anything else.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Pimrick was enjoying himself. Even though his new friends were complaining about the weather, he was happier here than he ever was.
When Pimrick heard the half-orc start shouting about someone killing her mates he thought of course awful people are interrupting a wonderful night. "hold on Rockcrusher", Pimrick said to his goliath friend, "I'm coming with you".
Pimrick followed his friend looking for any evidence of who the instigator of the conflict is.
Meleager is a sturdy medium-height human in his thirties. Brown eyes and brown short hair.
His character is stern when busy but lay-off and funny when on free time. He is loyal and thus vengeful when somebody is not.
He takes all his things and suddenly joins the others in watching what goes on. When Varis mentiones the one overthere is Yagra he is interested and troubled: He knows Yagra, not as friend but at least as acquaintance.
If Meleager has the time and space enough to arrive close (like 15ft) to the Xanatars he tries to wave his hands forward (signal for CALM) and with loud voice:
"WOW, WOW, CALM DOWN EVERYONE! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!"
His posture is not menacing or threatening but sincere, nevertheless, his weapon is at his side and his hand is calmly on it.
READY ACTION: if somebody really tries to attack him, Meleager attacks him back without damages but just trying to knock him prone
Sariel is a wood elf that dons a leather armor in a midnight blue color that's close to black. He wears an emblem around his neck. It is a harp which are made out of leaves. He carries a shortbow behind his back with a shield. On his sides he has his mace sheathed. He also carried a leather bag which forms around and carries his viol that his father gave to him. On his viol there is the same harp symbol at the neck, but at the back of it there is a yellow sun outline design. He has shoulder length brown hair and a slender fit build.
Sariel rolls his eyes at the sound of a fight starting. Instead of going into the fray with the others, he slightly makes a move towards the bard at the table named Threestrings. "Good evening, fellow bard. It seems we are to have another one of those nights." I point to the crowd gathering. "Wanna play some background music? Let's see if we can make it fast one." I take out my viol and start tuning it with Threestrings' lute.
The ever curious Tabaxi sits at the table with the others swapping tales of their adventures previous. He stands medium height with cream yeallow fur on his chest that darkens to orange-brown on his back. He is covered with black spots in a rosette pattern which gives him a slightly more exotic look. He wears light brownish leather armor tooled with the imagery of sheaves of grain upon it, and leaning against the wall within reach is an old sapling trunk, its broken and gnarled remains of it roots pointing towards the sky. He smiles and waves at everyone around even if he does not know them. Waterdeep has been a very interesting place for this young Tabaxi, and the bard here known as Threestrings has been a constant source of tales and songs to entertain. At the sound of the shouting, the moving around of bodies, and the disappearance of his large companion Dori, Cloudfur looks around the crowd to see what was happening, grabs his staff and will move to the top of the table to see over the crowd ready to intervene should it be required.
Will there be a Group PM for OOC conversations etc? or everything done in the game thread?
