As you exchange pleasantries, the serving girl departs, stifling a giggle at the antics of the Kobold. She smiles to herself as she heads for the stairs. After she disappears below, you see another figure ascend the steps and make his way toward the table. He is a well-dressed, middle-aged male. He has sharp features that hint at possible half-elf lineage. His shoulder length black hair is slicked back. Dark brown eyes stare stoically over a long nose.
Marion LaTiffe greets you all in turn and shakes each of your hands, wiping his hand discretely after shaking the kobold's. Marion takes a seat, and thanks you all for attending and partaking in his hospitality. The bottle of wine catches his eye and he says.
"Ah, Melshimber red! One of my favorites! Excellent choice, I think I'll have some." and he pours himself a glass. He takes a sip, savors it, and swallows. He then clears his throat and says:
"My name is Marion LaTiffe. My family’s fortune was built hundreds of years ago as maritime traders doing business that spanned the entirety of the Sword Coast. LaTiffe Trading Company is still the biggest and most successful trading company on the seas today. Outside of business, my passion lies in exploration and the acquisition of rare and exotic items. I recently acquired a peculiar set of items at an auction in Neverwinter that stoke the flames of those passions."
"Those items are a map and a spyglass. According to the legend told before bidding began, the map marks the location of a secret uncharted island that was used as a hideout by the ruthless pirate, Jean-François de La Rocque de Roberval."LaTiffe practically spits the name with obvious disgust.
"Roberval is well-known to my family as he was the cause of many lost trade ships some two hundred years ago. The legend went on to say that Roberval amassed his fortune on the island in the ruins of some long-dead maritime civilization. Roberval supposedly made a pact with a fiend found within and gained immortality and powerful spellcasting ability in exchange for the souls of he and his crew. With his newfound abilities, the pirate cast a spell on the island. The spell caused any ships that sailed near the island to become lost in an impenetrable fog. Only to be found floating lifeless and plundered weeks later. The spyglass is supposedly the key to navigating the fog and reaching the treasured island beyond."
"In my eyes, these "legends" are no more than fairy tales told to inflate the starting bid for the items. Sit long enough in any port city dive and you'll hear all sorts of similar fantasies slurred over tankards of grog and rum. What piqued my interest were the facts already known to me. That Roberval did operate in the general area illustrated on the map and that LaTiffe company records show hundreds of thousands of gold lost to the cunning swine. Not to mention the countless other ships he and his crew waylaid in their time. I will say that no record of Roberval’s death has ever been found, though I would bet he was lost at sea in one of the vicious storms The Trackless Sea is famous for."
"I have funded an expedition to find this lost island and I need men such as yourself to provide protection for the crew. My sources tell me word of my expedition has spread and I am confident one of my rivals plans to intervene in some malevolent fashion.
I am willing to pay you 500gp each, half now and half upon your return. Should you find this island and claim it and its contents in my name, you will be awarded an additional 500gp for a total of 1000gp each. This is non-negotiable. And he looks to each of you in turn with the stern eyes of a master businessman.
If you agree to these terms, you will rendezvous with Captain Red Skies aboard the Misty Maiden. You’ll find the Misty Maiden docked near Bilge Water Lane in the Dock Ward. Together you will oversee the supply of the ship and set sail for the island the following day."
OOC: I apologize for the wall of text. I have to go to work and I wanted to set the adventure hook. It's unlikely that I'll be able to post while at work, but I will check the thread when I get home around 9:30 tonight. I work full time, take college courses half time, have a family, and run campaigns for coworkers so I'm pretty busy. I enjoy DMing though so I shouldn't have a problem posting a few times every day. "I uhh, I am pretty good at talking..." The kobold would say with a smile. "I mean.. I like to talk that is... to just about anyone that will listen really" Strife will say as he holds a claw to his chin. "I am pretty good at digging holes and tunnels, I like to call them lairs. That is has been my main source of income really, digging lairs under peoples homes for them and digging sewer tunnels under the city . I have a few other magical abilities as well but I haven't really found a way to make any money using them yet so they are kind of worthless." The kobold would say with a frown as he extends his claw up into the air and twists it, and in doing so causes color of the flames in the lanterns throughout the tavern to change from their normal orange glow to a purple color.
(I was slow to type, this would be before the guy walks in with the offer :P )
Agamemnon downs the last of his ale and slams the empty mug on the table. "I apologize, I missed most of that. But if there are monsters to slay, then I accept."
Vappa's hand flinched at the amount of money they were promised. That had to be more than enough to start a new nest in the swamp. And who knows, if he performs well enough, this man may have more jobs for him in the future. He puts his fists together and slightly bows to the half-elf. "Vappa....accepts."
The kobold gasps at the amount of money offered. "Yes, that is fine.... yup... I will take your offer" Strife says with a huge toothy smile. "So can I have my half now... do I need to sign anything?.." he would say as his mind races with the things he wants to buy....
Lady Sue thinks to herself that would be a good deal towards what I will need to go back home and clean the corruption out of the keep and temple where I grew up. "I'm in she says, I can definitly use this as a training excerise to hone and grow my skills."
Seldor fills a glass with wine and quickly drains it. 500 will keep me going for a while and 1,000 would be even better. "I'm in. When do we start?" Seldor began thinking about whether he'd be able to spend some of that 250 up front on a night out in Waterdeep without getting too crazy.

If all are agreeable with that Susanne will set off to the local temple and find a shrine to Tyr for some prayers, if no Tyr shrine just the temple will work. Then will report to the boat after.
Strife would nod "Sounds good to me, I need to do purchase a few things. I cannot be a brave adventurer looking like this..." The kobold would say looking at his tattered clothing. "If anyone wants to come with me they are more than welcome, I don't think it should take me very long..." He would mention already getting up from the table and making his way out the door. The excitement of having this much coin causing his tail to whip back and forth wildly as he bounces out the door.

Agamemnon unceremoniously stuffs his pouch of coins in his sackcloth trousers and heads out into Waterdeep. If possible, he will purchase the following items from the various shops. He is also on the lookout for any shops which feature exotic or magical merchandise.
Perception: 21
1 fishing tackle (1 gp), 1 grappling hook (2 gp), and 50 feet of hempen rope (1 gp)
Vappa will take his bag and stroll out of the Yawning Portal. He wasn't quite sure what supplies he would need other than things he could scrounge up from nature, so he will purchase things he believes his comrades could use.
Lady Susanne bids the group farewell and heads downstairs. Behind the bar, she sees Durnan the barkeep, organizing bottles of alcohol. After asking Durnan the location of a Shrine to Tyr, if any, he tells her "Aye. In fact, we've an entire temple dedicated to The Maimed God. The Halls of Justice in the Castle Ward. Big statue of a big bearded man with a big sword out front. Can't miss it." and he returns to organizing the bottles. Lady Susanne then sets off to find the Halls Of Justice.
Strife leaves the group and makes his way through the noon crowd at the Yawning Portal. His tail whacking patrons in the shins and knees as he slips past. More an annoyance than actually harmful, he garners no more than a few raised eyebrows and head shaking in his wake. Strife steps out into the noon-day sun and readjusts his hood, looks down one end of the street, then the other, shrugs, and sets off to find supplies.
Is anyone joining Strife as he heads out to find supplies?
Seldor catches the attention of the serving girl and she comes over to the table. "Yes, sir? Anything else I can get for you?" Seldor places his order and requests one of the better rooms available. After a bit of a wait, Durnan, the proprietor of the Yawning Portal, comes to the table bearing a bottle of wine that's enveloped in a rich black velvet sack. He pulls the drawstring and reveals the bottle to Seldor. "Here you are sir, the finest vintage we have to offer. And, a feast fit for a Masked Lord." Durnan sets the bottle down and backs away from the table as three servers approach the table with trays laden with food. They set your feast before you and leave you to enjoy it. Suckling pig, pigeon pie, turnips soaking in butter, and honeycombs.
Seldor, you'll be (hopefully) sleeping aboard the Misty Matron tonight and setting sail at daybreak tomorrow. Do you still want the room at the Yawning Portal? The grand total for your purchases comes to 165gp. 100 for the wine, 50gp for the feast, and 15gp for the fine clothes.
Agamemnon wanders the winding streets of Waterdeep, looking for a general store through the crowds of Waterdhavians going about their business. After almost an hour, he stumbles across a storefront with a sign reading "The Pack Mule". Agamemnon enters the establishment and makes his purchases inside. After inquiring about magical items, the shopkeeper, Jahner, directs him to another store a few blocks away called "Mage Pindu's". Agamemnon thanks Jahner and leaves for the shop down the street. Entering Mage Pindu's, Agamemnon is greeted by a tall, bald Turami man with dark skin and dark eyes. With a large smile, he says "Welcome to Mage Pindu's! Please, feel free to browse. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Some of my wares are capable of much more than they seem." Agamemnon sees the following items for sale.
Feel free to purchase what you like. These are all homebrew items of my own design, and I haven't yet entered them into dndbeyond. Keep in mind almost all of them require attunement and you can only be attuned to three items at one time. For the sake of our adventure, we'll say attunement requires you to carry or wear the item on your person for at least one hour.
Vappa leaves the Yawning Portal and sniffs the weak breeze blowing along the street. He smells the usual inner-city scents, manure from horses pulling carriages, body sweat vainly masked by sickeningly sweet floral perfumes, and... Copper. The sharp aroma so similar to blood fills Vappa's nostrils. he follows the smell and soon catches whiffs of silver and gold. His nose leads him to a street merchant's stall. The merchant, in opulent attire, stands behind a finely crafted shop stall. The stall is cleverly designed to fold up for easy transport in the back of a carriage. Dwarven construction ensures it's sturdy enough as well. A fat sack of coin hangs from the man's hip and he greets Vappa. Vappa communicates his needs to the man and walks away from the stall 200gp lighter but with four potions of healing in hand.
I'll resolve Strife's supply run in about an hour. Let me know if anyone wishes to join him. Agamemnon, due to your low perception check you'll still be busy trying to get your bearings in the unfamiliar city as Strife goes about his business, so you'll be unable to join him.
Agamemnon stares in awe at the magical merchandise offered him. He selects the Backlash Bracers, Amulet of the Watchtower, and Deck of Tarot Cards, and pays the shopkeeper the requisite 85 gold pieces, purposefully neglecting to engage in his customary bartering procedure: that of intimidating the seller into half price. He bows to Mage Pindu and exits the shop, heading in the direction of the docks, where he inquires for the Misty Matron.
Strife sets out on his own to find supplies. The towering buildings and towering Watderdhavians for that matter, surround Strife in maze-like confusion. He adjusts his hood to block most of the noon-time sun and takes a deep breath before darting off down the busy street. Under horsedrawn carriages and through the legs of passersby, Strife runs in no particular direction, trying to get clear of the hustle and bustle and find a quiet nook to compose himself. His flight leads him down a blessedly deserted alleyway in a run-down part of town. Smashed windows are boarded over, the boards themselves smashed open. The buildings in this older part of town sag and lean against one another in a drunken fashion. Strife finds a pile of hay to sit upon while he steels himself for another foray into the busy streets. A sudden cry shatters the silence "Get away from me- help! Someone HELP!" a woman's voice and the sounds of a struggle echo from around a nearby corner in the alley. Strife, what do you do?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(is this after buying my stuff? Just wondering, it shouldn't matter as far as potential combat goes)
Strife would lift his head and look around for the sound before trying his best to quickly and quietly make his way around the corner towards the woman in trouble, pulling out a dagger in one hand and holding his orb in the other.
