Here is a map of the dungeon as you've explored it, so far. You started at the spiral staircase just above and to the right of center. You made your way south, past the alcoves with coffins, to the room where you fought the Gricks. Then you went back north, finding one more alcove with coffins, before making your way down a few steps to the west, crossing the one room and now entering the one where I have placed you.
Føpé will search for traps, investigation 4 and if no one finds any, he will wish he had thieves tools since they'd be handy and the traveling people had taught him how to use them.
Ireena, fascinated, watches the halfling poke and prod at the locked chests. Have you no tools?
She rummages through her pack, ultimately finding a leather pouch with a set of thin rods and hooks of various types. Do you know how to use them?
Føpé thinks about Irena's offer, I have some basic knowledge of how to use them, but no expertise. If you're in the habit of carrying them. you could probably put them to better use than me, but I'll be happy to take a crack at these locks if you get stuck.
As soon as you took your first level in Rogue, you got proficiency with Thieves' Tools, as well as a second proficiency off of the Rogue's available first-level proficiencies.
while those guys are futzing around with tools and such Kif is going to go up to the chest in the north where I have placed myself and tried to strike the lock off with my ax...what do you want from me roll-wise
Having proficiency with a thing means you get your Proficiency bonus. At level 3, that means a +2. Sometimes you can't even check a thing if you aren't proficient with it.

Give me an attack roll against an AC 12. It'll make a loud noise, which might not matter. But it might.

What's the ability check for tools?
Thief's tools is dex bonus plus proficiency (+2) if you have it which you do.
Dov, when you multiclassed into Rogue you got a proficiency in Thieves' Tools and you also get to pick one of the abilities I listed above as an additional proficiency.
Everybody watches Fope as he fumbles with his borrowed Thieves' Tools. Does he know what he's doing? It's hard to say. Eventually he works his way through all five chests. He returns the tools to Ireena, who straightens the three or four that are now bent
Starting in the top right of the five rooms, and moving counterclockwise, this is what you find:
1. This room’s chest contains 11 gp and 60 sp in a pouch made of human skin. 2. This room’s chest contains three moss agates (worth 10 gp each) in a folded piece of black cloth. 3. This room’s chest contains a black leather eyepatch with a carnelian (worth 50 gp) sewn into it, and a logbook, bound in grimy black leather. This journal maintains a list of names, physical descriptions, and details of some sort of event. The second column maintains the physical description of each victim named in the first column, while the third column bears gruesome details describing the sacrifice, such as “Struggled profusely” and “No sedative given.”. 4. This room’s chest contains an ivory hairbrush with silver bristles (worth 25 gp). 5. This room’s chest contains a sleek, silvered battleaxe, engraved with runes around the neck, just below the blade.
Barnaby studies both items closely. The runes, of course, hint at the possibility of a magical aura. Other than the runes, though, he doesn't see any clues. The eyepatch does not have any magical insignia on it, but who knows? Maybe. Roll an Investigation check, just for the eyepatch.
It seems plausible that this is a ceremonial item. Maybe magic, maybe not, but it's possible that it was worn for some rituals and kept here, securely, both for that purpose and because it is valuable.

I think I did pick. I didn't quit understand what was meant by proficiency with thieves tools. Is that a dex check +2?

Kif pauses, realizes the noise might be an issue and reconsiders his plan, deciding to wait for Fope to try and unlock the chests

[bold]Ah, very interesting, veeerry interesting. I wonder if some of these have magical properties? Particularly this axe with the tunes on it.[/bold]
Arcana check on the axe and eyepatch if applicable: 10
“Hmmm, hard to say.” Barnaby removes his hat long enough to slip the eyepatch over his head. He imagines himself looking quite the badass pirate.
“Here Kif. Why don’t you give this axe a try. It looks like it could cause some serious mayhem.”

Could be cursed.
