After arriving in Galena, you manged to find a little Inn, called the Full Flagon, with some rooms still available, luckily arriving a few days before the general throng. It was nothing fancy but it was comfortable enough.
The Full Flagon was brightly light and kept tidy by a jolly little Halfling inkeeper named Zalfur Ostgood. He was always ready with an ale and a smile. As the days passed, the Inn became busier and busier and soon it was difficult to even move in the common room, let alone get Zalfur's attention to place an order. You heard many visitors grumbling as they entered looking for a room, only to be turned away.
A day before the festival was to begin, a Crier entered the tavern, dressed in the red and blue colours of the local lord. "Here ye, here ye."
He paused briefly for the room to quite before continuing, "The honorable Councillor Darius is seeking volunteers to bolster the town's security during the festival. Any and all who are interested must report to the Watch headquarter at first light tomorrow."
Satisfied that the message had been received, the Crier turned on his heels and exited, no doubt to deliver the same message to the next establishment.
Checking your coin purse, you noticed that funds were getting a bit low. While small, the Inn was by no means free. This might be a good opportunity to replenish your dwindling supply.
OOC: let me know if you would like to do anything before the morning.
Deciding that this would be an excellent opportunity to not only refill his coin purse, but also be a better way to execute his mission, rather than spending his days trying (and failing) to get Zalfur's attention, Rhomorn spends his evening meditating in his room, resolved to speak with this Councillor Darius in the morning.
Uncertain if a man of his talents would be needed, but not wanting to lose his room should the fees increase due to demand, Zailoth decides to head to his room. It might need protecting at this point and the common room could become dangerous. . . yes. . he would head to his room and read something.. . while listening at the door. . just in case. Well, maybe just a few walks up and down the hall to see who was here. . then listening. . then reading.
The evening passes uneventfully. First thing in the morning, you head down to the common room. There are only two or three other guests in the room at this early hour, most of the others presumably still fast asleep after a late night of debauchery. You grab some cold porridge before you make your way to the Watch headquarters.
As you get up and walk towards the door, you see that one other inn guest has similar intentions. You both converge at the entrance.
OOC: feel free to describe, and if you would like, introduce yourselves.
Bumping into another guest at the door, Rhomorn is suddenly acutely aware of how he may appear to this other guest. Covered in bright fiery red scales and standing at 6'10", clad in his armour, he is well aware of how intimidating he can look. Seeking to reassure, he looks into the face of the stranger with as much kindness as his scaly face and orange/black eyes can muster.
"Well met Sir. Are you also off to answer the Councillor's summons?"
"Oh. . indeed, yes", Zailoth looks up and sees the imposing figure after regaining his composure. Fascination quickly overcoming sensible fear, "you are quite large aren't you. . no insult meant by that of course."
Zailoth thinks about all the times people have tried to teach him to focus on the present, "I am headed to the Councillor's as well. We could travel there together, I would love to hear about how you came to be here. . or another time perhaps." Zailoth pulls some cheese and break from his pack and offers some to the towering guest.
You make small talk on the walk over to the watch headquarters. Despite the early hour, the streets are already fairly busy, being the first day of the festival. The sun shone brightly and there was feeling of excitement emanating from most everyone that you passed.
The watch headquarters was a relatively nondescript building; a squat, single story structure made almost entirely of a gray, rough cut stone. The only entry that you can see lies at the top of three wide stone steps, two heavy wooden doors are set into a wide hole cut into the front of the building, almost like a cave entrance in the side of a mountain. There are no windows to speak of, only a few arrow slits set high above the city street. The building seems out of place among the relatively bright and cheery surroundings.
The doors to the headquarters were open to the street and a few other individuals filtered into the building ahead of you.
Entering, it takes a moment for your eyes to adjust to the dim light. You find yourself standing in a large entryway where several others are milling about.
Shortly after you arrive a tall human with broad shoulders strolled into the room from an adjoining room. His brown, shoulder length hair is graying at the edges. The man is built and moves like a trained warrior, but clearly his edges have begun to soften, likely due to an administrator's lifestyle.
He loudly clears his throat to get everyone's attention as he walks to a position close to the center of the room, he looks tired and worn, and not overly impressed with his current situation. He sighs and in a loud voice addresses everyone in the hall, "Welcome, thank you all for coming. My name is Councilman Atreyan. I have been tasked by the council to head security for this years' festival. The watch will be in charge of the regular lawkeeping, but they are not equipped to completely handle the temporary influx of visitors that the festival brings. Thus, we have decided to hire supplemental security for the event. This position pays a handsome sum of 1 gold per day. In addition to this, your lodging will be covered for the duration of your employment. Now, anyone who agrees to this position will answer to myself, the Captain of the Watch and any watch member. You will be expected for follow the directives set out by any of these individuals. We do not expect more than simple drunken bar fights, or perhaps a theft or two during the festival, so the job should be fairly straight forward. You will be paired with one other volunteer who will be your partner for the length of employment. Are there any questions?"
He pauses for a moment to look around. When there are no questions, he continues, "anyone still interested, please register at the desk behind me." He points to a long wooden desk against the back wall of the room, staffed by an older, slightly balding female dwarf. "Lysrielle there will take your information, just tell her where you are staying so arrangements can be made. Once you have registered, you will be directed to Chief Landry, who will assign partners and provide you with your assignments."
He clears his throat once more, "Thank you for volunteering and good luck out there." His task done, he exits through the same door he entered through.
Rhomorn merely nods when the man says "here we go", then follows just behind him as they approach the desk. Thinking back to what brought him to this town in the first place Rhomorn is sure that taking on a security position is the right thing to do - he IS here to protect and watch over others after all.
He remains quiet as the man informs Lysrielle of their sleeping arrangements, and fills out the paperwork with a sense of pride and duty.
When all is said and done, and they have been pointed in the direction of Chief Landry, Rhomorn turns to the man and, with a sweep of his large hand, says "After you Sir".
You exit the main lobby through the door in the side wall that was indicated to you. The room you enter is no more cheery than the last, it is smaller however. A line forms in front of a plain, solid wood desk. The human male sitting behind it is presumably Chief Landry, handing out assignments to the volunteers. You join the line and wait as it slowly moves closer to the table.
It is mid morning by the time you finally get to speak to the Chief. As you approach, another watch member walks behind the table and whispers something into the Chief's ear. There is a brief exchange before the watch member leaves and the Chief beckons you forward.
He pauses for a moment when he registers Rhomorn, but quickly recovers and gets down to business. "Welcome volunteers, it appears we're hitting the ground running. I just received a report of a minor disturbance at a tavern, the Sloshing Drunkard, about one block from here that I would like you to investigate. I don't have any details, just that the owner, a half-orc named Ogden, was heard bellowing for the watch. Head over there and see what the brute is yelling about."
He gives you directions and waves you on in dismissal before becoming the next pair forward.
You exit the headquarters and head in the direction that the Chief indicated. The tavern is easy enough to find only takes minutes to walk to, despite the increased traffic on the street. Besides the sign hanging over the door, there is nothing to set the tavern apart from the surrounding buildings. The one thing you do notice immediately is the portly half-orc pacing nervously in the street in front of the establishment. This, presumably, is the proprietor Ogden. He sees you notice him and waves you over enthusiastically.
Zailoth begins waking toward the half-orc, Ogden was the name, then stops looking back toward his new companion in arms.. . thick arms at that.
Scanning around the street, one eyebrow cocked, he whispers loudly, "Rhomorn. . did i say that right? Do you want to speak with him. . he seems. . more like someone . . .that would appreciate your stature over mine. I am going to keep an eye on the building while you speak. . if you agree of course." Working with someone else was going to take some extra thought.
Casting a kind smile down upon his smaller friend, and ignoring his mispronunciation, Rhomorn replies, "Not to worry good Sir! I'd be happy to talk the man." and with a pat on Zailoth's back Rhomorn strides towards the half-orc, his loud voice booming "Hello Sir! I understand you are the owner of this drinking establishment, and that you requested the Watch. I'm sorry to say you'll have to make do with us two volunteers for the time being, but rest assured my good man, we are as capable a pair as any!" Clapping a hand on the half-orc's shoulder Rhomorn says finally, "Tell me what happened."
Ogden does not see you approach and jumps at Rhomorn's voice. He jumps again once he sees Rhomorn. He quickly recovers and looks you both over for a moment, skeptically, but then seems to accept what you are saying and shrugs.
He then stides forward, his former agitation renewed. In a gruff, booking voice he bellows, "You, go in side and deal with dat ting!"
Not really giving you a chance to respond, he points to the door and continues, "Well? Whatchu waiting for? Huh?"

Realizing that that was all the information that the Half-Orc was going to give him, Rhomorn gives a glance to his companion before confidently striding to the door, and giving it a nice firm shove open.
You manage to duck out of the way as a bar stool sales though the door to splinter on the street behind you. You hear exclamations of surprise from passers by and a stream of curses from Ogden.

Zailoth looks to his newest companion for the morning, smiles, and leads toward the desk, "here we go..."
Zailoth will approach the desk and state that they are both at the Full Flagon - accepting the assignment assuming there is no funny business.
