Jambiya, still a little nervous, steels herself and speaks up. "Hey, I'm little, and I can see in the dark. Why don't we tie that rope around me, and you guys can keep it taut as I go in there, then if I fall, I won't fall very far, and if there's trouble, you can just haul me back up! Besides, there might be fish or something down there I can ask about the wreck."

"Maybe Flindbar stole it from a fishing captain? You did say it was supposed to be modest, right? So we are looking for a beard ring. Can't be that big so it could be anywhere. We'll have to look closely at everything. Also you said the pirate had a crew of gnolls - I wonder what happened to them all. Think a gnoll would fit down these stairs? I'm happy to send Gill down to secure the rope at the bottom to help us climb down safely. And I'd be happy to go down first unless someone else wants to.
"Oh I'm sorry Jambiya I didn't hear you over my talking. That's a great idea if you want to be incredibly brave. I will send Gill down first to be a helper. Let me know what you want him to do and he will do it., which hopefully will save you some effort and risk. And I can climb down right behind you, very quickly, should you need me."
The goblin girl nods bravely, and helps to pull the rope up, then has someone tie it around her so that it is secure but won't hurt her (bowline!). Then she begins going down the stairs into the hole, carefully. "It looks easy so far!" she calls up to the group. Of course, she's only gone down one or two steps!

Anafrey would take a swig from her flash before grabbing hold of the rope. "It was a good idea Jambiya.. and good timing too, I was just about to dive in myself" She would say with a grin, clutching the rope tightly and using her other hand to move her white flowing hair from her eyes as the wind tosses it around behind her.
"Maldorn, feel like being our eyes in the sky, or on deck, as it were? Just until we check out this room?" Erric says to the ranger with a grin, as he helps Jambiya and then Anafrey head down the rope. He'll plan to follow them down (rolling once for acrobatics 7 but feel free to add in another roll if he gets advantage for some reason) after they get down.
At first, Maldorn agrees: "Yes, I can stay here as a lookout. If anything goes wrong, however, you'll have to do something to inform me. That way I can come to your aid if needed."
Then, he tries suggesting a different person: "Of course, Leenock here could be our lookout instead. If there is trouble down there, we'll need more than his shield." He then looks at both Erric and Ebokk: "What do you say?"
"Oh I just meant for the first minute or so while we get things oriented. Not a long-term thing. Wouldn't want to go any deeper than what we can see right now without you holding up your bow menacingly behind me, Maldorn. Ebook, what do you want to do?"
As instructed, Maldorn waits for all four companions to go down and then does his best to keep an eye out for any threats. He also raises his arm with a coiled Sagitta on it, hoping the snake can feel the air with its tongue and hiss if it feels anything strange.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ebokk agrees with the plan, and everyone save Maldorn and Sagitta navigates the rickety stairs using the rope to the lower deck without much trouble. It is much as Erric had described. The place is a mess. Not only because the ship wrecked, but it appears everything salvageable has been taken. Since only a third of the ship is above water, it doesn't take long to search. There is no sign of humanoid life or any remains. The ship seems to have been deserted. All that's left are a few empty crates and barrels and broken ship parts. You do find three empty bird nests.
DM rollz: 4
Jambiya, you wander over to the water's edge and peer into the drink. The surface is calmer here; the choppiness has been buffeted by the ship's however damaged walls. You look down and can see there is a very large hole in the bottom of the boat not far into the water.
"Well this is exciting..." Anafrey would say as she looks around the battered ship. "I suppose we have to go deeper if we hope to find anything worth while..." She would say as she looks to Jambiya.
The goblin girl peers into the water. "I guess we should see how deep it is here. Maybe the beard ring fell out of the boat through this hole?" She looks around, spying the bird nests. "Or maybe these birds flew off with it?" she says hopefully, poking about in the nests.

"Maldorn do you want to come down and see what sort of tracks or evidence of Flindbar and his gnolls remain here? Seems like it's been picked clean, so anything we find will be found by surmounting some big danger that scared off the previous scavengers. Like going in that water. I can send Gill down to grab something we can see from the dry safety of this part of the wreck. Can anyone see anything? There's no way to get the water out is there? It'll just come right back in through the holes in the hull. Any of you love to swim?" Erric begins making strained groaning noises to try to deal with the stress this is causing him. He shakes his head a bit to try to let the panic pass. "Jambiya I hope you are right and the birds took it - then we don't have to go in the water. But how would we know? I guess we could try to float out into the flooded part of the wreck and look closer. Does anyone feel like diving down to look at that hole? Gill can be down there waiting and ready to go grab something for us if we see it. Would more torchlight help us see in there better?"
He looks up with a start, and grabs the big ball of string from his pack, and ties the broken rapier to the end, hoping it's heavy enough to approximate the sounding line he saw the sailors using on their journey to Waterdeep. He looks for a place to peek out of the wreck and drop the line into the water, letting the broken rapier pull down string until it stops and then pulls it back out, trying to measure the length of string that got wet.
(Does it seem like there is more to the ship below them, or is the deck they are on the lowest deck they can access that's out of the water?)
Jambiya, the nests don't contain anything but the usual scraps of wood, rope threads, bits of fabric, and feathers that make up the little bowls. You're not sure how old the nests are.
Erric, your inventory says your string is 10 feet long, which would not equate to a "big ball of string." As for the ship, you're pretty sure you're as deep into the ship as you can get (no lower decks).

Roll acrobatics, Jambiya. With advantage.
Maldorn will keep hold of the other end of the rope and ask Anafrey to join him.
OOC: Read the above as Maldorn offering help to any of Anafrey’s skill checks that she might have to do while holding the rope.

“Very well. You two should go in and join the ladies. I’ll stay here for an extra minute or so and then go in. Unless your yell for help.”

Ah right Could Erric try the same thing with a coil of rope and tie his whetstone and the broken rapier to the end?
Sure!
"So how deep does it go?" Anafrey would ask as she watches the rope dip down into the water.
