Erric, you are the model of a perfect student, asking all the right questions and listening without any distraction. Once the last fish has been caught, you feel like you have a pretty good handle on Maldorn's fishing techniques (though you still need to work on converting knowledge into experience).
Jambiya, you realize after being at camp for a little while that you haven't seen Snap since you all were dismounting. In fact, he doesn't appear even up until you're ready for bed.
Anafrey, as you have never crafted armor before, you are at quite a loss on how to convert the pieces of the crab shell into usable equipment. But that doesn't stop you from trying because you're pretty sure you'll figure it out!
Anafrey, please roll a vanilla d20 for me.
Maldorn volunteers for first watch, Jambiya for fourth watch. Ebokk volunteers for second. Erric and Anafrey, where do you fall in?

OOC: Missed that part of your post, Erric.

Nothing of import happens during first shift. Maldorn smokes and enjoys the night. Rain is coming, being pushed along by a brisk breeze. He wakes Erric and Ebokk when it is their turn to take over. Erric entertains Ebokk with jokes and humorous stories. There are several times that they have to hush each other to keep from waking the others with their laughing. Anafrey is woken at her appointed time, and she busies herself trying to figure out how to turn her crab kill into armor. It is incredible dark because the clouds are thick and obscuring the moon and stars. Even the fire has gone out because of the wind. She works with her hands practically in her face. Suddenly, a sound like a hand bell starts ringing.
Round 1
Maldorn, you're up. Actually, you're prone, but it's your turn. You were just awoken by your alarm spell. It's super dark. It's also windy. Perception using your human hearing and sight are both at disadvantage and are no good more than 20 feet away. I can't find where it is said whether the sound of the bell gives any indication where the spell has been activated, so I'm going to rule that it does not. The sound is everywhere since you are within the radius of the spell.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maldorn is not taking any chances. He stands up and blows his horn as to wake everybody up. Time permitting, he'll have a quick glance over his shoulder.

Maldorn's horn sounds mightily over even the wind. While those who were sleeping were already waking from the sound of the bell, their eyes shoot open at the trumpet blast.

Maldorn, you look around, but don't see anything.
Suddenly, two arrows fly out of the darkness at Maldorn. (arrow attack A from the west: 12, damage: 3 piercing damage — arrow attack B from the southwest: 11, damage: 5 piercing damage) Maldorn isn't sure how — perhaps it was the wind — but both arrows miss him, flying off into the darkness.
OOC: To add to the element of surprise, I'm not posting an initiative order.
Next up, in this order: Erric and Jambiya at the same time, then Anafrey.
Jambiya only:
With your darkvision, you'll see a bugbear 20 feet north of the group and two hobgoblins 30 feet away approaching from the east.
Anafrey only:
You're "prone" because you're sitting.
Flindbar knows where all the enemies are because of his darkvision, but you're not in a situation where he thinks you're in danger of dying, so he's not saying. This isn't strange to you because he hasn't ever been helpful to you, but I thought you should know.
Jambiya scrambles up from her bedroll, looking about hurriedly. "Two uglies over there, one big one over there!" she points first east, then north. Then she cuts loose with a blast of green and white energy into the darkness to the east. Then she scampers into the darkness to the south.
Move: Half move to stand up. Half move after attacking to run south. Action: Cast Eldritch Blast at one of the foes to the east (per spoiler). 23 to hit, for 1 magical force damage. Bonus Action: Nimble Escape to try and Hide somewhere to the south (depending on terrain, I guess the DC may be ridiculously high if they have dark vision and there's no cover). Stealth: 20

she/her Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands.
Anafrey would open her eyes.. and realizing they were under attack by arrows she would remain still on the ground and look around, attempting to locate the threat.. Perception! 10
Erric, the blast itself doesn't give off light, but you see the blast hit something about 30 feet east of the campsite (the five of you are all within a 20 feet cube).
Erric wakes up, again with bedhead despite sleeping on the ground, and tries to make sense of what is happening. He partially takes in what Jambiya said, and he follows her to the south, though perhaps 10 feet to the east, ideally finding some cover.
He peers into the darkness, trying to pinpoint the general area from which the arrows (did he even see arrows?) flew. He pulls out a bit of fleece and waves his hand and the sound of a very large tree falling -- branches snapping, roots being yanked, leaves shaking, enormous appears from a point he hopes is right behind the attackers (minor illusion). He's hoping it will roust them from their hiding spots and into the camp so he can see them and begin casting more useful spells. It will take too long to light a torch so he does not even try.
Jambiya and Erric stand (yes, you both saw the arrows because you were awake even before Maldorn blew his horn). Jambiya points out some targets and then hoofs it south, throwing a blast of green white energy eastward. The blast hits, but she can see it did minimal damage. Erric watches the energy explode and veers that way, deciding to try to cause a distraction. The sound of a very large tree falling sounds a little to the west of Ebokk, who jumps, looking around.
Anafrey, you look up from your project of trying to figure out how to make armor out of the crab shells and look around. It is really dark, and you don't see anything except Jambiya and Erric, who have scurried south, Maldorn standing and looking around, and Ebokk looking like he's about to get to his feet. Oh, wait! There's a bugbear stomping in from the north looking angry. (The perception was your action, but you could still move and have a bonus action if you want.)
"Hey! Hey guys a bug bear incoming!" Anafrey would shout as she scrambles to her feet and draws her shortbow.. trying to focus on the target in the dark.
OOC: Yeah, it is also unclear to me what Maldorn can see. He presumably saw the arrows and where they came from. He heard Erric's fake tree sound, saw where Jambiya shot an enemy, and now Anafrey is pointing out another foe. With all of these hints out there, can he see the enemies? Would attacks be at disadvantage?
I was waiting to see if Anafrey wants to do anything else besides just look around during her turn. As it is very dark, those without darkvision have very limited distance of being able to see anything.

OOC: Sorry, She is just going to draw her weapon and alert others to the bugbear heading in from the north. She isn't going to bother to move since she is drawing her bow.
Said bugbear stomps south and, once Maldorn is within range, swings his morningstar at the hunter. (morningstar attack: 8, damage: Unable to parse dice roll. piercing damage) At the same time, two hobgoblins march in from the east. Both of them converge on Anafrey. (longsword attack #1: 15, damage: 6 slashing damage) (longsword attack #2: 6, damage: 2 + 8 slashing damage) Anafrey is able to dodge the first attack, but the second creature uses its pair's attack to give it the upperhand, and it slices into Anafrey with a deep cut.
Ebokk jumps to his feet. "We're under attack!" he yells belatedly. As Anafrey yells out in pain, the dwarf moves forward to stand between Anafrey and Maldorn and swings his hammer at one of the hobgoblins. (two-handed warhammer attack: 14, damage: 8 bludgeoning damage) As the hobgoblin is knocked backward off its feet, blood flying from its nose and mouth, with a half-hysterical yell, Ebokk swings his weapon again at the other hobgoblin. (action surge; two-handed warhammer attack: 19, damage: 6 bludgeoning damage) The hobgoblin's head is almost knocked off as the hammer hits its cheek. When the creature turns back, half of its face is bloody and misshapen, and it sways a little on its feet.
Round 2: Maldorn, unknown archers in the west, Erric and Jambiya, Anafrey, bugbear, remaining hobgoblin, Ebokk
(Really thought I had inspired Jambiya one my last turn but on further read I apparently did not. If you'll allow that mulligan, lovely! If not, no worries and I'll get it the next round.)
