Gort and Gnut would around the ship, adjusting sails as required, but otherwise silent. Even Klatu remains silent beside the tiller, watching the party with faint amusement and exasperation.
"There it is," he announces pointing at a town beside the river. The air is full of the sounds of seabirds and the taste of salt and as you round the final bend, you can see the ocean maybe a league beyond. Darksheld sits at the elbow of a bend in the river, its harbour sheltered from the sea by a spit of land, that has been reinforced with gravel and dirt from the mining excavations. On the upriver side, another spit small spit of debris breaks the slow current. As you enter the harbour, the river shallows suddenly as a black shelf of rock rises to form the riverbed here. Inside the harbor are several small fishing boats, and two empty barges drawn up on the beach. A third barge is moored in a small canal dug into the town. Despite the early hour, a line of Men are busy loading the barge with granite and limestone bricks.
Gort and Gnut lower the sail, and Klatu mutters a phrase, the tiller glows momentarily and a hum fills the boat as it turns easily and bumps gently against a wooden pier. Gort and Gnut swiftly make the vessel fast. "Come on then, the Master's office is just up the street a bit," and sets off with his guards in tow.
The town, you can see, as rapidly grown, but the streets are made of hard packed gravel and the houses have all been whitewashed in the recent passed. Smoke comes from chimneys and the smell of breakfast, salt and a bit of dead fish fill the air. The Men loading the barge, though dirty, seem well dressed in smocks, pants and shoes, and the townspeople are respectable dressed. Nothing fancy, but clean, well mended and serviceable.
Klatu leads you to a house with the sign of a scale over the door into the Master's office. A simple room with a few shelves of books and scrolls, a table, desk and four guest chairs.
The village overlord is a stocky, middle-aged man with graying hair and a beard to match. He looks a bit startled by your sudden appearance, but smiles at Klatu. "Good as your word, I see," he says to Klatu.
"You asked and I delivered, and a more likely group of adventurers I don't think I have ever run across. I see, big things, big things for them."
"I'll bet you do. Well, here is your finders fee," he hands Klatu a small bag that jingles.
"Thank you, and now that they are here, would you mind telling us ALL what this is about?"
"You've told them about the mine? Bazili? Good, good."
The Master turns his attention to you, “The results from the quarry seem too good to be true,” he says. “And the raid on the slavers’ camp was a little too quick and clean, if you ask me.” He starts counting on his fingers as he paces back and forth across the room. “And then there’s the dwarves that work in the quarry at night but that nobody ever sees. And, of course, the terrible attacks we’ve had around Darkshelf.” He turns to face you. “Something’s not right at that quarry. Will you look into it for me?”
Allistar listens intently followed by a puzzled look. “We are more than qualified to look into this quarry. But I think it is pretty deep and it gets dark there too, no? We might have to go inside it as well.” Allistar looks at the rest of the party nodding his head yes, seeing if they agree.
"About time," Zansnut thought. He waved to a few of the better looking ladies as they made their way through town to the master's office. When he entered the halfling started looking for anything valuable to him that wasn't nailed down, before being distracted by the jingle of the bag. The one that the master handed Klatu. Zansnut assumed that meant his job was done and that he would not be joining them on the mission.
After listening to the master tell them his purpose he spoke up. "Do you suspect Bazili is behind the recent acts?" If that was the case it would make sense why he called outside adventurers. It also would line up with what he was thinking. He didn't trust the dwarf since the moment he heard about him. "What do you think about this?" He asked Khloe. She seemed to be the only other person he talked to so far that he thought was as cautious as him. It was something he respected.

Maya would try and take a moment to take in her surroundings as they got off the boat. Maybe falling a little bit behind the group she would do a little scramble to catch up. Breakfast smelt good, and she couldn’t help but wonder when they’d get to try the local food.
Holding her hands behind her back, Maya would saunter in the office after a couple of the others and veer off towards the bookshelves and scrolls. Not really tuning into the others, she would scan the shelves, mostly out of pure curiosity, to see what there was.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Khlöe out of habit would have pulled up her hood to make her elven ears and by proxy her face as obscured as possible without it looking too suspicious the minute the town was visible. During the walk to the village master's office she kept pace with whoever seemed the most relaxed in the party hoping that the party didn't too much attention from any of locals. The fact the maybe-employer wanted discretion yet was willing to walk them into town broad daylight didn't sit well with Khlöe who was more or less accustomed to walking into towns with the purpose of being unseen and unnoticed by prying eyes.
When inside the office she didn't pull her hood choosing to stand nearest to any exist just in case. As the master spoke to the group she focused on his word in hope of figuring out which claims of his were true or if he was to be trustworthy. Turning her attention to Zasnut when he asked for her opinion "A job with too many variables, and not enough facts. I'm willing to look into it if the coin if right" Folding her arms she leans on the closest object "From what Klatu told us during the boat ride here, the trouble only really started after the miners hit a ground-spring. Bazili has the mines in his control awhile so better results quarry results could just be 'accidental finds' very convenient knowledge of new veins but not sinester in nature, after all the town is getting jobs and revenue if a bit skimmed from the top. Unless he found something that will earn him and his own big coin and wanted to cut others from the picture, there shouldn't be much reason to mess with quarry. The most likely scenario, went too deep and found something that got hungry enough to begin exploring," she let out a sigh "A quick looking clean up of a slaver's camp could mean either terrible management in the slavers part, big power on Bazili's, or some sort of truce, but nothing to signify maulings and corpse chewing. "
Erevan enjoys taking in the new scenery as they disembark the boat, always one to seize the opportunity to explore new places, no matter the reason for his being there. He strolls through the village, visibly at ease but alert. As the group enter the Master's office, the half-elf nods his head in greeting to the man that they have been taken to, before frowning slightly and cautiously asking:
"It does certainly sound suspicious! But can you offer us any kind of protection if things turn hostile? Or are we entirely alone in this, and you will never have heard of us if we are caught? We may be able you look into this for you, although I'd have to discuss with the others. You can't blame us for being cautious, we're still basically strangers being asked to look into mysterious goings-on involving potentially very dangerous individuals. There are a lot of things going on here and we are all new to this area, is there any advice you can give us before we head out? If we do this, that is. Perhaps anyone we could speak to, somewhere we could get more information, people to avoid, that kind of thing?"
Maya's attention went to Khlöe when she began to speak. She didn't say much, so when she did, Maya cared to listen. Though, it didn't stop her from continuing to nose around the shelves, going up on her tip toes to scan higher shelves if need be. When Erevan took his turn to speak, Maya couldn't help but nod in agreement as she perused.
"I agree with all my comrades... there must be more information..." Maya muttered as she squatted down to scan the lower shelves. She patted a finger to her nose as she pondered.
Tanirall has been standing quietly near the door with his arms crossed. Preferring to watch the others this time, he listens to any answers given but doesn’t seem inclined to ask anything himself. He watches as the Master hands Klatu his gold eying the size of the bag judging its weight, curious to see how wealthy this man may be.

Khlöe
He seems honest enough, and concerned.
"Well, yes. I suspect Bazili of something, I just don't know what. He's changed since I gave him control of running the mine. But It isn't so much the quarry as it was the attacks. I sent a man named Kwon out to find what’s been killing our people and leaving the bodies looking half chewed-up. He brought me a few reports, but I haven’t seen or heard from him in a while now.” Neistor’s face becomes grim. “Frankly, I’m worried. I’m hoping that by looking into the quarry, you’ll maybe find Kwon—alive, I mean. And if you can find out what happened to him, bring me proof, then I a prepared to give you 500 in gold for your efforts.”
Hearing the amount of gold Khlöe let out a low whistle. Even if the coin was to split amongst the group that would add quite a lot to everyone’s pocket.
“Any recognizable features or items this Kwon fellow has?” She glanced at the others checking to see if they were on aboard with task. The amount coin was exactly the right amount to get Khlöe on board and she didn’t mind having to split, there was safety in numbers and this job just might require numbers.
"Oh, medium height, thin, bald, with brown eyes and a bit of a flat face and broad nose. Don't let his thinness fool ya, that man moves like a snake. Had training out in the far east as a boy, east of Thay and the Endless Wastes. Honestly believe he might be part eastern, though he has never said anything."
Flemig introduces himself to Neistor. "Flemig Flammeling at your service good Master!" Buzzing around the conversations, a noticeable frown crosses his face when the Master announces the amount of gold to be paid to the group. Sidling up to Tanirall he whispers rather loudly "That purse is a pittance compared to what they must be profiting from the mines. We should ask for more!".
Making his way back to where the Master sits, Flemig asks "Good Master, would it be possible for us to inspect one of the more recently deceased individuals? Sometimes much knowledge can be gained by determining how exactly a body met its end. If not, are there any clues that have already been gained by those that have seen the bodies?"
Neistor shuffles some of the papers and eventually hands you 3 scraps of paper and a map. "I've marked the spot Kwon indicated in that last report. "
Report 1
"Master Neistor,
I have found tracks on the riverbank near the quarry going in and out of the river. By size, I would guess it is more than one creature, and as large as a horse. It would seem to slither on the ground, much like a snake, but also to have two webbed claws."
Report 2
"Master Neistor,
As suspected, B is not being honest, I have found a hidden jetty near the quarry and what I believe to be an entrance into the mines. It is guarded, but there are also many tracks of the creatures nearby."
Report 3
"Master Neistor,
I have found an unmarked shaft into the mine, and it is unguarded and appears to be for air. It can be found east of the mine entrance and east and a bit north of the guardhouse. It right at the feet of the weeping daughters."
"Examine the body? I am afraid not, the custom in these parts is burning, to release the soul back into the ether so that it may be reborn. Even those of strangers. The bodies where badly mauled, usually the stomach opened and its contents eaten. Some showed evidence of the limbs being eaten. One body, which we believed to be a slave had burn marks under the manacles on its legs."
@Kaisen You have your directions mixed up. The ventilation shaft is west of the mine entrance and northwest of the guard house.
Tanirall leans down next to Flemig “I’m surprised you even thought about that. We’ll see what more information we can get before pushing for more money. If nothing else, I’m sure we can snag some valuable gems in the mine for ourselves. We’re getting paid one way or another” Tanirall shoots Flemig a sly grin before standing up straight again and holding a hand over his mouth to keep him from talking so loudly.

He planned to find the contract of mine ownership when they went to meet Bazili. He knew he would need a blank piece of paper if he were to replace it.
