Rees watches Talien taste the substance and makes a face. "Great, you guys do...that, I'm gonna go check the next area."
52. Underpass
You open the door on the far end of the library and find damp and crumbled steps descending sharply below... You can't see right to the bottom, but there does not appear to be any twists, or turns in the decrepit stairs.
Alten would have waited for Rees to report back and then go into area 52. I would like to assess whether it is safe for the group to use the stairs - will they support us or collapse when one or two people start descending if we go that way?

If Ungrim is still with Rees, she would ask him to check out further down the stairs to see what she can't (not that he can tell her, but she doesn't really understand how he works)

Ungrim sees a door at the bottom of the stairs. It is wooden, but thicker than the rest you've encountered. It appears to be shut fast, but Ungrim can't tell if it is locked, or not.

Using your passive perception you can tell more than one person at a time will likely degrade the integrity of the stairs and probably cause them to crumble... especially since Talien weighs a ton and is carrying a small medieval armory with him.
Assuming I catch up to Rees and see the condition of the stairs
Those stairs look pretty rickety. I'm almost tempted to trash em to delay anything down there while we check the other way first. If the wand isn't to the east, we can always come back and rope down. What do you think?
The stairs aren't than 60 ft long? I'm assuming I can see the bottom and the door with Darkvision. I'll take a couple of steps down, duck my head and take a look to see the door - unless you're changing up the map

Nope. You can see straight down to the door about 15 feet.
DM Note: Which rooms are you referring to in the east? The only room left up top is 48 which you haven't opened (room with glowing coming under door). The rest of the rooms in the east are only available via the stairs.
I meant the down hallway to the east - 52. Considering just collapsing the western stair case. Mistake on my part
While I'm at it, I'll go look at the stairs going down 52. Are they in better condition or are they the same?
I think the stairs symbol on 52 W is backwards... and what's causing confusion (on my part as well). I drew a path in the direction you need to go (follow the red arrows). For the sake of brevity and the fact there's nothing actually interesting on these stairs in the module, let's just say you all file down the stairs one by one and are now standing at the aforementioned locked door (marked with a red circle). Sorry about that.
The map is confusing. Is that a door at the 7 o'clock position on room 49 with the purple fungus? It appears that you can go thru there, go down and then come back around to the other side of the stairs that comes back to the 9 o'clock position. That's can't be right, unless 50-52 are slopped or on some kind of mystical mobius strip.
If that's a door, then that changes the calculation about destroying the western stair since anything in there could come out the 7 o'clock door. Unless we can spike it or otherwise make the door impassable?

How does this register Grom?

It doesn't register as any school of magic Grom is familiar with.

Sorry... You haven’t come across this substance before and can’t figure out what it is based on ingesting it.

Points of Interest:
Talien shrugs upon tasting the substance and move on to the next room. He places one of the flasks in his pack.

You would see the same as Rees upon entering the next room
