Kal climbs up the rubble pile expertly careful not to dislodge any rocks or fall. Once he reaches the top he (currently without light) sees a dark passage continuing down from his current position heading eastward. There is a natural stone pillar about 10 feet from the ledge. It seems to have some weird markings on it but you can't make them out without light.
Branagh is the groups only source of light at this point so he will be hanging back while the sneakiest of us scout ahead. I thought it was a group check my bad
Does climbing the ledge lead me away from the rest of the group or is it overlooking the place we're headed towards? I'm not looking to split up. I was envisioning a pile of rubble leading to an elevation that followed along the way we were going.
If it is two different directions then Kal will stay with the group.

You don't know where it leads and there is not enough light for you to see. You can see a stone pillar about 4 feet around that could make a good tie off point.
(Kal, do you tie a rope to come back down or do you just descend without assistance?)
Need a stealth check to move forward past the rubble pile (will not be affected by the light) (Already have Branah's)
I climbed up without the rope. How does Kal assess the difference in difficulty between rope and free descent? If I use the rope, is there any way to retrieve it or does it mean I have to leave it?

Lower DC to descend with a rope. Also it would depend on the knot you would use. As a soldier (and you have a sailor with you as well) that could more than likely tie the proper knot (I would use a 'man harness' personally) to allow you to retrieve the rope once you have descended because you would just pull the slack back around.)
Kal grew up in the Marching Mountains in Calimshan. Between that and being a Ranger with a soldier background, I presume he's decently familiar climbing. I was trying to assess how much easier it is with the rope vs without. Does the descent go from easy to moderate? Easy to difficult? I'm trying to assess risk. If I know that I can use the rope and retrieve it, then I would use the rope (unless the difficulty difference is less than 5, mechanically speaking).
Personally, I know almost nothing about climbing so I have no idea how you attach a rope at the top of something securely, climb down, and get the rope loose since I presume you tie it at the top.

Moderate without rope, easy with rope.
To make it easy (with your background), I will say you do know the appropriate knots to make it back down and retrieve your rope once your make it back down.
(If you think of a rope and pulley system, you would be the weight (and the counter weight by using your hands/feet against the wall) and the stone pillar would be the pulley)
(If you had 2 ropes, you could do a slip knot and tie the second rope to the release and toss it over the ledge) (Sorry my inner rope nerd is showing)
Kal pulls out his rope and secures himself to it, and wraps it around the pillar. He then rappels down from the ledge to the party members and retrieves his rope placing it back in/on his pack (as it was before).
Need a stealth roll from the following still (Niche, JC, Kal, Shadrac)
Branagh still has his shield alight.
Stealth with disadvantage due to shield illumination and armour. 5

Only need stealth if you are continuing on past the rubble pile that leads to another entrance. Is the party splitting to explore separately?
(I think it is a case of same time posting so just making sure)

It will be if you move forward past the rubble pile/ledge.

I will move forward enough to give off dim light near the ledge

So we're moving forward to where Niche explored, ready for trouble.

I nerd out over many things. Ropes and knots is not one of them. But I'll use the rope to come down
