Craven roars, (which to us would like be more of a high pitched squeak, but I digress) as he charges toward the stoat and attacks with his claws (8)
Craven leaps onto the neck of the stoat and starts beating it with his fists, shouting in an unnaturally low voice, “BISHY BASHY!” However, he doesn’t seem to notice the stoat’s long neck and powerful bite!
Mazer's first priority is the civilians. He sees that Nissa has successfully drawn its attention, so it's time to take care of the threat. He considers the large beast for a minute, thinking where best to attack it. He then draws his bow, and aims for its weak spot...
Nissa fires another shot just as the hulking form of Craven crashes into the stoat. They both connect, however, it's clear that the matted fur of the beast is protecting softening the damage. Your combined attacks deal only 2 harm.
The stoat grabs hold of Craven with its jaws and rips him from its neck, tossing him directly into Nissa. You suffer 1 harm each, but your +1 armor scores reduce that harm to 0 each.
Then there's a twang and a whistle of an arrow as Mazer shoots. Eyes are tricky targets... The shot goes wide and misses the beast entirely! (Mark 1 exp point!) With Craven and Nissa (temporarily) in a heap, it lunges at Mazer and rakes him with his claws. Mazer suffers 2 harm!
(Craven, meanwhile, you feel your blood pounding in your head. You suffer 1 harm (not reduced by armor, aka 'ignore armor')! Your potion will wear off soon...)
In one fluid motion, Eli launches into the face of the stoat as it attacks. The large mouse somehow lifts himself into the air, aiming for the eyes with his bare hands. (+1 Ongoing from Mazer) (+1 Forward from Nissa/Crushing Wave)
Fight: 9 Crushing Wave: 15 (Hold 2) Daze, and restrain.
Eli slams into the face of the stoat, pulling down the eyelids hard. The impact alone causes reverberations the nearby mice can feel. Using his weight, he drags the head of the stoat down, and when it impacts the ground, he rolls away in the same direction of his fall. He bounces to his feet, and now the great club that was on his back is in his hands. Calling out to his companions, he says, “The bigger the foe, the greater the victory.”
The stoat suffers 1 harm (damage reduced by its natural armor). Additionally, it has been briefly knocked unconscious. As it lies there, you finally get a better look at the device strapped around its torso.
It's a saddle.
Actually, as it lies there, the stoat doesn't really look that threatening. This creature was someone's mount... but who would ride such a thing?
Predator! Nissa will jump to her feet, and rather than scrabble for her bow, which she lost when Craven crashed into her, she will draw her longsword and charge in to finish the thing off. The small black mouse races up to the dazed stoat, lifting her long, slim sword for a strike!
Mazer nods in appreciation at Eli's fighting skills as he delivers a knockout blow to the ermine. His attention immediately goes back to the group of civilians, who are standing around slack jawed. "Move, quickly!" says Mazer to the group in his command voice. He points to the barn and other structures on the farm. He turns to the highway guards, pulling rank to get them to lead the farmers out. "Get the civilians indoors now!"
Craven scrambles to his fee-... foot with animalistic ferocity, he charges toward the Stoat, 9. Leaping over Nissa, Craven brings his fists down on the Stoat’s head!
But as Nissa nears the beast, her sword lowers. She gets a good look at the stoat and its harness.
Sense: 11
”Hold!” she cries out, one paw up in the air.
She examines the dazed stoat to learn more about what happened here, and if there are any dangers we haven’t noticed. That is, why is a stoat with a saddle rampaging about a relatively well defended mouse community?
Just before Craven's fists come crashing down, two things occur to Nissa: 1) Obviously, no mouse, hare, shrew, or squirrel would raise a stoat as a pet- they're one of the most vicious killers to be found on the island. Given the size of the animal (most Loamholt stoats are a bit smaller than this one), it seems likely that this stoat is from the mainland 2) There's an object crammed between the saddle cinch and the creature's torso: It looks like a large black glove with spiked knuckles
There's next to nothing she can do to stop Craven, though- and why would she? This is a terrible beast, after all; if it weren't put down who can say how many innocent lives would be lost? Craven leaps through the air and comes crashing down onto the stoat. Just before he lands, the beast's maw opens wide, its terrible, nightmarish fangs hungrily snapping. But then Craven collides and it's done.
When the dust settles, the stoat is dead. Craven, you feel a shudder of nausea and you immediately begin to, ah, noisily eject the aqua jekylli (and most of your stomach contents) from your body (take another 1 harm ignore armor). Mazer is positioned with the highway mice and farmers, all of whom are staring grim-faced at the stoat. A capable-looking highway guard (his knuckles white-gripped on his pike) addresses Mazer with a salute. "Thank you, Guardmouse. That thing would have taken any number of us. Damned if I understand it. Haven't seen a stoat that size in all my seasons."
Nissa and Eli, you sense someone just behind you. Turning, you see it's the drunken hare from The King's Ransom. He's leaning against a truly massive quarterstaff, and he's holding Craven's peg leg by its straps in his free paw. He offers it to you, saying, "Your friend over there may want this. You get your people together, then come on back to the Ransom. Sef would like a word."
Nissa will let Eli handle the peg leg and Craven and the hare. She will turn without a word to investigate the saddle and the glove, climbing up on the dead thing to sniff about. She will pull the glove out, and then check the saddle for anything telling, markings, saddlebags, non-stoat fur. She curls her lip a little at the stoat smell, unable to scent anything else beneath it. Can she tell what the saddle is made of? If leather, what kind of animal? To Eli and Mazer, when the latter is done with the guard, she says, "Never have I seen a stoat t'large. From the mainland, it is, no mistake." She will examine the glove, then hand it to Mazer. "The rider must be some about. The highway guard should stay alert."
Then the small black mouse will hop down, make a large circle around Craven and the contents of his stomach, and retrieve her bow, checking it for damage.
She will sniff the wind, and peer about the place, then go with the rest back to the inn.

Mazer takes a look at the glove, seeing if he can conclude anything from its make. Of what origin and composition does it appear to be? Has he ever seen or heard of anything like it?
Craven will recover, hobble over on three legs to Eli, and fasten his leg again. After that, he gives a sharp, but tired whistle. Who knows what it may summon to him.

The highway guard with the pike (whose name is Wit) turns his head from the others- he had been ordering the farmers to return to their home. "As you say, Captain." He recounts the events leading up to the attack:
The highway guards (3 of them) were spaced throughout the town, more alert than usual thanks to Nissa's warning. Farmer Tiddlepaw was walking home from The King's Ransom, somewhat worse for the drink. Given that his brother supplied the damn brew, Sef usually saw to it that that one or two were poured on the house. On his way, he heard a twig snap behind him. He turned and saw the damned stoat crouched and ready to rip his head off. A fallen twig saved the Farmer's life. He fell backwards and cried out, which summoned the guards and two of his farm hands. They managed to back the monster up to the barley field, which is when Nissa arrived. They suffered some injuries (one of the other highway guards is currently patching up one of the farm hands), but no lives were lost.
"Thank you for your quick thinking and bravery, Wit. You do honor to the highway guard."
Mazer looks at the other farmers to see if there are any other injuries that need tending, and if the injured farm hand needs any special care. He will offer any assistance he can until it is no longer needed. Then, he will make his way to the inn with the group to hear what Sef has to say.
"Thank you for your quick thinking and bravery, Wit. You do honor to the highway guard."
Before you leave to help, Wit takes your arm. "Yer... forgive me, Captain, but yeh must be that Mazer what the Guard's been talking about this past season, eh?" He cocks his head to give you an appraising look, then nods in approval. "My sister's husband is a member of the East Wall Banners. Yeh saved his life that day, and who knows how many others..." He glances around at Eli, Nissa, and Craven, then chuckles. "Looks like yeh've been anchored to a crew what can't be ordered around. Keep at it, Captain. If yer half the mouse I've heard yeh are, there might be a few songs to sing about the lot of yeh before the season's out."
Mazer nods at the man's words. "Thank you Wit. You are right, it is a new unit. But it is a unit with experienced veterans. I'm eager to see what I can learn from them."
