Life circumstances have recently dictated that it will be hard for me to make my in-person games for some time. As a new father of a baby girl, I will be spending a lot of time at home, and often only have access to my phone, so I figure playing some pbp would be a good deal. I would much rather be a player than a DM as I don't have much time, but it appears as though DMs are in short supply around here. I'm looking for some players who won't mind a very casual and slow approach to a game.If we find a good crew, maybe somebody would be interested in being a Co-DM to help drive it forward.
Before committing to an entire campaign, let's do a "one-shot" dungeon on here to see if I like the format. If it is fun and successful, maybe we will continue.
Please post player applications here. I'm looking for 3, maybe 4 people. When I find people who I think might be good candidates, we'll get started.
Application:
Willing to Co-DM? (Yes or No)
Basic Character Background
Class (if you are committed to playing one)
Stats will be point-buy or standard array (your choice). We will not be rolling. Homebrew content not permitted (unless I homebrew it). Anything official that you can add to a DND Beyond character you can use. Unearthed Arcana is permitted.
This may not be exactly cannon, but based on Forgotten Realms setting!
During the Blue Age, when Toril was still a new world, the gods and the primordials fought for dominance. This Age came to a sudden stop when the primordial known as the Dendar the Night Serpent took the sun out of the sky. Eventually, the Elder Gods won the fight when the primordials were betrayed by one of their own: Ubtao the Deceiver.
During the period of eternal night, the Yuan-Ti all but conquered the world. However, the spiteful creatures grew comfortable and soft during their period of dominance. When Dendar the Night Serpent was smote from the sky and banished beneath the Peaks of Flame in Chult, the dawning of the new day brought hope to the people that they oppressed.
Yours is a brutal, primeval world. The kingdom of man is new, the wisdom of the elves has been secreted away in the deepest woods, and the strength and pride of the dwarves has been broken. The world follows the red law of tooth and claw, and the Yuan-ti have doubled-down on their cruelty, hoping to bring back their banished goddess. The blood of sacrifices seems to dye the very seas red.
You have been unfortunate enough to have been swept up in a recent Yuan-ti raid. Maybe your tribe lost their battle with them, or perhaps you were spirited away in the middle of the night by their enchanting magic. Regardless, you now find yourself in a water-logged slave pit, along with others, awaiting your eventual sacrifice to Dendar, or your conversion to a Yuan-ti.
He is a slave who spent the last few years working in a major city (I was thinking Waterdeep, but that can change.) During this time he was worked on construction projects and has gained skills in working with stone and wood. He is also fairly strong and hardy from lugging around heavy materials. He was made a slave after his family became so indebted to one of the guilds that there was no way to resolve the situation besides servitude or imprisonment. Daner is not sure they made the right choice. After several years of dealing with the abuse and humiliation, he tried to run, looking for some way to restore his family name, and free those he had to leave behind. This attempt failed though, and rather than deal with a troublesome charge, he was handed over to the Yuan-ti
Hi, I would definitely be interested in giving this a try; I have not done a pbp before, but am eager to have a bit more DnD in my life! I currently DM a home game, so have a preference to be a player, but I'm not averse to doing some DMing down the line. I live in the UK, so don't know if that will cause time-zone issues though.
I would like to play a Wizard, and if you allow variant human
Background: Brought up in poor slums, Darion was surrounded by danger and poverty. His mother cared for him, but food was often short. From an early age he would roam the streets, stealing, begging and as time went on swindling using games of chance. He saw the differences that luck and chance played, how some families in the aftermath of Dendar's fall had been able to claw their way up and others cast low. A clever boy, he saw and was fascinated by street-conjurers using simple spells and taught himself some basic cantrips, and that led to his first real break. A Wizard, a rare kindly soul, saw him in the streets and was impressed by this drive. Over time, he took the boy and his mother under his wings, training Darion as his apprentice. Pulled from the slums, Darion is distrustful of wealth and those with it, though is quite happy to accumulate it himself!
Hi! I've never done PbP on D&D Beyond but I've done quite a bit on RPGgeek. I'd love to jump in on this game and I have a Goliath Barbarian (lvl 1) with the Plan Insurgent (from Curse of Strahd) background which lines up perfectly with being captured by Yuan-Ti. He used to be a blacksmith in a village by the sea until his family was killed and he was captured and thrown into the slave pit. Now his rage is all that drives him forward.
I'll write out more backstory when I'm on my computer.
I've done a few PbP campaigns as a player and am currently DM'ing my own PbP campaign. I've played & DM'd face to face for roughly 4 years and will be willing to Co-DM as needed/ wanted.
Tempest lived deep within a river valley about a hundred miles upstream from the coast he used to call home. When he was 15 his family was taken by smugglers and barely managed to escape diving deep beneath the waves refusing to surface. He followed the boats that took his parents for two days straight before he passed out and sank to the sea floor from exhaustion. Tempest was startled awake from his exhaustion in a daze feeling his body being transported by a gentle current but exhaustion took him and he fell back into a deep slumber. The gentle current brought him back to the shore near his home where he woke to find a female shrouded in a flowing robe of leaves standing over him. A single tear fell from her eye and landed on Tempest's chest. Immediately his strained muscles felt renewed and his mind sharpened. He shook his head and grasp her outstretched hand. He looked down upon his body and out to the sea from which he came but when he turned back the female was gone, only a leaf gently floating in the wind remained. The leaf spurred away from him caught in a breeze. Tempest followed the leaf until in finally came to rest in a nearby river delta. Tempest swam upstream for days until he reached a large waterfall that fed a giant pool. For the last 13 years he lived on his own growing to be one with nature in his secluded grove hidden away from the Yuan-ti that took his parents. Unfortunately for Tempest they finally found him. He was asleep lying in the cool mud on the bank of the pool when he felt a sharp pain in his leg. He jerked up only to have his vision go dark and feel another sharp pain in his temple. Tempest's eyes slowly fluttered open trying to discern his new surroundings, a dull steady pain in the back of his head from a blow he never saw coming. He sees the Yuan-ti sentries and scared faces of other slaves when the realization that he is now a prisoner hits him.
I'd like to play as a Water Gensai Druid named Tempest if allowed.
A few responses already, nice! I’ll probably arbitrarily (since I don’t know any of you) pick a few folks and we can try to move forward.
Some clarifications. We’ll start at level 3. As for equipment, it will probably be confiscated at the start, but perhaps the gear has been stored somewhere?
By Co-DM, I mean somebody to assist running the game. I imagine this would mostly be taking over some monsters during combat, so everyone isn’t waiting around on me all of the time. It could include running your own dungeons and giving me a break! But, we’ll see if we keep this up that long.
I've never DMed before, but I would be willing to attempt to Co-DM with a little guidance at first to get the hang of it but I'm also busy irl too. I have a Variant Human (if that's allowed) Bard that I would like to play.
He was born to peasant parents in a relatively small village in the far outskirts, a full day's travel away from the nearest big city. They lived a simple life, not having a lot of money but they did the best they could with what they had and making sure that Ellis grew up happy and healthy like any child should. But the eternal night made things very difficult with trying to farm their crops and with no sun, everyone in the village was depressed and feeling hopeless everyday. Ellis wanted to be the light in this darkness and so would sing for everyone in the village, playing his lyre too. He provided some happiness, his voice like that of an angel and having such a big heart of gold, always trying to help out anyone in need no matter what. He eventually decided to make the trips out to the big city in order to perform there so that he may earn more money for his parents and the other villagers. He quickly became famous for his angelic songs and selfless personality, earning quite a bit of money and taking it back home. Even after the eternal night ended and the village was a happier place now, his parents no longer needing his money, Ellis continued to perform in the big city because he loves seeing the smiles on everyone's faces when he performs while bringing joy to those around him. At the same time, he could feel that his music was now magical and hoped to continue using it for the good of other people. One night Ellis had been traveling very late at night, having stayed in the city too long when he realized the time, on his way back home to the village. It had been quiet as per usual until someone in a hooded cloak appeared on the dirt road and was approaching him, him believing that they might have been a villager that came to meet up with him. It wasn't until they were right in front of him, having pulled their hood down when he realized that they were no villager, the person appearing human but had eyes and fangs of a snake. Ellis had heard stories of the Yuan-ti, especially after Dendar fell but never expected to ever encounter one out here. Before he could even move, he was staring into the Yuan-ti's eyes and suddenly had no control over himself at all, quickly falling unconscious. He woke up to find himself in the slave pit with manacles on, afraid for his life and now worried about the village and his parents as well.
Willing to Co-DM: yes (though this will be my first time dming but with a little guidance i might be able to cover your down time to keep the story moving)
Basic Character Background: half elf ( wizard), a former acolyte who rejects all gods after suffering many tragedies, he now indulges his urges (chaotic neutral) and is seeking revenge against his wrongdoers
Rawk felt relatively safe high in the mountain temple where she served as an apprentice to a priest. The temple served as one of the few sanctuaries from the Yuan-ti until they attacked. Rawk fought and watched as her master was slain along with many of the refugees within. Unable to help Rawk attempted to fly away carrying two children but took a spear through her wing and was yanked to the ground and promptly bound. She watched as the children were taken before a hood was thrown over her eyes. When the hood was finally removed she looked frantically for the two children but can't find them.
Alright people, I'll go ahead and pick some folks so that I don't have to go through the anguish of turning too many people down. If this plods along and someone drops out, I may open it back up. Thanks for the applications!
Let's go with @Sixftoot10, @foofaspoon, @Xtracrispy, and @Amaya5.
Many thanks to everyone else. What a great wealth of untapped players exist on here! Maybe if we get this figured out we can get more people in on it.
I don't imagine that this will move at a very quick pace, so I am not worried about the timezone difference for our UK friend! Out of combat, we will say that it is generally free play, and we don't need to follow a particular order, unless there is an initiative count. In combat, we'll have all players go in one group, and players can post their action as they find time. Then the monsters will go. If it has been too long and you miss a round of combat, you can have 2 actions the next round. If you get passed up again you will lose the action. (Luckily that won't work on the monsters, mweherher).
I'll close the thread and make the opening post. Then we will figure it out from there. Apologies in advance for my pbp newbness... but.. as we can see... somebody has got to DM around here!
(Disclaimer: This encounter might bear more than a passing resemblance to a certain part of Tomb of Annihilation. If this is old news to you and you don't feel like doing something very similar, please let me know!)
The stench of sweat fills the humid air. Your arms are manacled together by the wrists and you sit at the bottom of a dank, partially flooded pit. Other prisoners whimper nearby, lit by faint, sickly green torchlight from the hole above.
It has only been a few hours, you think, since you have been thrown into this pit, but you already feel the tepid, stagnant water making you ill. You have been stripped of your belongings, but any clothes you had on were left on you (the Yuan-ti abhor viewing the pathetic humanoid body). After getting your wits about you and calming down to reality, you appreciate that there are three other individuals down in this pit with you. (The other characters)
Use this as a chance to introduce your characters and ask basic questions of one another and of the situation. You may make a Sleight of Hand check to see if you were smooth enough to smuggle one piece of your starting equipment into the pit with you. The larger the item, the higher the DC.
Sleight of Hand: 20 (Attempting to keep my sprig of mistletoe.)
Tempest, a tall stout water gensai with light blue skin and green hair looks around the pit and then to the other three occupants. He gives each a nod as their eyes meet and he whispers, "I'm tempest. I think I might be able to get us out of these manacles. Are any of you injured?"
(How much water is in the pit and are the walls earthen or stone?)

Daner wrinkles his nose at the putrid smell rising up around him. His clothes soaked in the damp and he doubted he would ever truly get rid of the slime out of his bears. Even as a slave for the guilds he had had a dry bed to sleep in and he could always step into the sun and get warm. Daner stumped around trying to find a place he could try and at least get a little dry.
in the gloom, he could see three other figures who looked as miserable as he did. Daner took a few steps toward the closest one. “Hey? You okay over there?”
The water is about three feet deep, and very murky. The walls are masonry stone but (as the dwarf would surely point out) it is a sloppy job. You think that there might be sufficient footholds to climb to the top and have a peek out of the iron grate “lid” that is sealing you in here.
Tempest easily sneaks the sprig of mistletoe in with him. Daner is not as lucky.

The figure of a large gensai appeared. He easily dwarfed (pun intended) Daner. “Getting these chains off would be great. Do what you can.”
Daner scans his surroundings, seeing the masonry and the iron grate high above. Sure he might be able to climb, but there was no garauntee that the grate could be moved. Daner hoped there was some other way to get out of there. Even if it was a pipe he had to squeeze through.
"I'm fine. Are you okay?" Tempest responds as he lifts the sprig from underneath the collar of his leather tunic and attempts to cast Goodberry. If successful he'll hand one to each of the occupants and say, "Eat this. It will help with the hunger."
After eating one of the berries himself he'll look around at the manacles and to the water. "Raise your manacles out of the water." he says and he'll attempt to use Shape Water to fill/ surround the hinges of the manacles with water then instantly freeze it to try to break the metal or at least bend it enough where their hands can slip through.
