Everyone give me a perception check at disadvantage. You may use your passive instead of rolling. If you do so, then your passive for this check is considered 4 less than what it normally is due to disadvantaqe. The reason for disadvantage... I will tell you later. It is not lighting.
Endurance ducks out of the way just as an algal vine swoops down from the tall tress and attempts to grab him. Three vines swing down from the canopies of the trees that are kept alive. The vines are hostile. What do you do?
(OOC : To be clear, we have a rockface in front of us, trees behind us and a bunch of tentacles coming from the trees above us? Is it trees as far as the eye can see left and right/ North and south, and does it look an awful lot like those tentacles will be able to harry us if we try to climb the rocks or are they sloped to a degree that we would be moving away from the trees as we climb/hike? Also - you promised you'd tell us what the disadvantage on Perception checks was for! :D )
(Oh. That's right, I didn't make it obvious enough. All the trees here are infected by moss, fungi or algae. So there are many different algal vines hanging from the trees and there are more in the canopies themselves. So noticing the "alive" algae out of all the dead ones is not going to be easy. It's like finding a specific tree in a forest.)
The mountains have a slight slant but you are not sure if you can get out of the reach of these vines in time if you go that route. Though trees and vines are all around you, only one tree is actually attacking. Maybe you can run deeper into the forest and hope whatever it is that's hiding in the canopies don't follow you.
"Damn it. I picked the wrong boat trip to stop dying my hair!" Yuldra spits, disgusted at the lack of peroxide in her pack. "They're not all alive, so one of us must smell of decaying plant matter - don't look at me, I washed before we set sail." She shoots a daggered look at Endurance. "We can't climb and fight a ******* tree. How about we slalom north so the tendrils tie themselves around other trees and choke each-other to death? Oh I don't know... Wait, don't burn it, didn't you say something about releasing the schmores?"
Varis sighs and backs up, pulling out his sword. I'm actually getting tired of plants trying to kill us...at least these don't have teeth. That we can see, anyway. I agree with Yuldra...serpentine! He weaves around a few nearby trees.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Back and ready to DM and chew bubblegum. And I'm alllll outta bubblegum.
"Releasing spores, spores from things like fungus, not from vines" (though not sure why Endurance might know that) "If we teach the vines fire hurts, they might stay away from it and we can use it to get past"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
In the time you've spent talking and lighting a torch, (you are not in initiative but turns are still being tracked) the vines make a wild swing at Endurance.
Hit: 8 Dmg: 8 Bludgeoning.
The vine swings at Endurance and the tree rattles as slimy leaves drop from above. Endurance backs off and barely avoids the strike.
Varis can see approximately 60 feetish, and stays towards the back of the group trying to keep an eye out.
perception 12

Endurance lights a torch and holds the flame near the vines, attempting to burn them

Varis quietly ponders the metaphysical question of whether vines can be "taught".

"Well, good luck training your pet. It seems very affectionate."
Yuldra takes off at a slalomy run, ready to fire an edritch blast if anything looks to threaten her.
