"May be do not touch it just yet?" Ever-cautious Ola now suspected her own shadow in this treacherous place. "At least until someone can check it for another magic trap?" In case here pleading was not heard, she would follow Zelra to the gold - just in case yet another zombie emerges from the pot or anything like that happens.
Sylyra was also moving toward the pile of gold when Ola causes him to pause. He looks over his shoulder at Uragum. "Would you mind beginning your detection with the gold? Collecting will take some time, and you can work on the other curiosities as we are doing that after we know whether it is safe. I will also see if there is any poison in the area." The elf sits on the floor, places his staff across his folded legs, and begins murmuring in Druidic.
Uragum opens his and let's out a sigh having broke his concentration on the current spell. He then then says, "The spell I have will tell me what a magic object can do, not tell me what has magic. So, I wouldn't be able to do anything with the pile of gold but if we find and object in there then I could tell what it does. "
He gestures to the symbol and says, "We know this has magic so I can cast my spell on it." He then points to the staff and magic circle, "We can assume the staff and circle there are magic so I can cast my spell on it, one at a time." Finally he points to the pile of gold, "I cant cast the spell on that entire pile but should you find an object in there, then I can... and it will take time for each object."
Sylyra and Ola cross the room, entering the southern alcove. To the rogue's absolute horror, she realizes very quickly as she begins to count the gold coins that they are nothing more than worthless wooden disks painted gold.
Meanwhile, Sylyra and Uragum each prepare their rituals. Neither finds anything with their spells, however; whatever magic the glyphs contained, they no longer hold.
Room Description:
This chamber’s walls are painted to look like the inside of a dragon’s lair: the scenes depict piles of treasure, robed acolytes bowing in supplication, bound prisoners being served up as a meal, etc. All the paintings focus toward the alcove in the south wall, where a pile of gold coins form a nest perfect for a large dragon!
In addition to the paintings, there are four large glyphs: one each on the north, south, east and west walls. The southern glyph is within the alcove. These glyphs have been marred and disrupted, and no longer glow.
In the northwest corner of the room, a teleportation circle has been etched into the floor. The lack of wear on the etchings implies that the circle was created very recently. A thick metal rod, inscribed with sigils stands in the middle of the circle. Lying on the floor in different parts of the room are 4 now truly dead bodies. Although the bodies look roughly humanoid, they are stitched together from various parts, including some that appear to be draconic in nature.
Finishing his ritual, Uragum stands up and closes the book. He blinks a few times and says, "This rune no longer holds any magic and so I can't discern what it does through the ritual. However, it's clear that it was a trap that gave movement to those corpses." He begins to walking to the pile of gold by Sylyra and Ola but stops mid way, his attention drawn back to the circle and rod. Coin was all well and good but a magic item would be better. Uragum walks over to the circle and stops short. He turns his large body towards the others and says, "Hey, I want to inspect this thing but I don't know if it's nature. I have to touch it to inspect it and doing so might do nothing, might summon something or transport me somewhere so lets be ready."
Ola smiled with relieve - not at Zelra's disappointment, of course, but absence of traps was a nice change of pace. With the cautious curiosity came came close to the circle and Uragum. "Can you tell where it leads without entering it?"
Turning his head to look at Ola he says, "No. The spell I have tells me what an item or object does, sometimes I can get a trigger word but nothing else quite that specific."
Zelra's expression changes from incredible excitement to confusion to absolute horror in a matter of seconds. She throws the fake coins to the ground and kicks the pile with great frustration. "Why would anyone do this???" She begins to mutter various curses under her breath at a fast pace, stringing the words together to create an.... "interesting" description of what she thinks of the one who tricked her.
As the others talk about the teleportation portal, Zelra takes the few moments to calm herself and says, still with a hint of annoyance in her voice, "Why don't we just destroy it?"
Sylyra shares Zelra's frustration, but shows it only in his facial expression. Taking a deep breath, the elf turns to inspect one of the bodies of their attackers as the others discuss the transportation circle. He is curious about their "construction".
"We could destroy it, we could leave it and set a trap. Though I'm not capable of casting at this level so I'd be weary of who comes out the otherside." He points at the staff and says, "That staff though, I think that may be worth keeping. So I want to check the circle out first and then if alls clear the staff."
He then sits down by the circle and casts identify on it.
Arnald, scared of setting off any more traps, stays by the entrance to the room. Glancing over at Ruik, "Too bad we don't have matching uniforms, we could be guards. Ha!"
This seems to be a quite powerful circle of teleportation. It is likely linked to a similar circle elsewhere, and its use has been protected by something your spell does not reveal.
For Sylyra:
Each of the zombies has some semblance of draconic features, such as small wings, tails, or elongated necks that have been stitched together sturdily.
After awhile Uragum stands up. He turns towards the others and says. "As I suspected, it's a powerful circle of teleportation and it's linked to another someplace else." He then and turns to Zelra and gives a stern and serious stare and says, "It is also protected by powerful magic. Though I don't know what, it would be ill advised to try and destroy it. That staff though, I want to know what it is. But first to be save."
With a flick of is fingers a hawk materializes out of thin air and upon his arm. He strokes a finger across the side of it's face and down its back. He then gently tosses it into the air where it flies across the circle to land upon the staff.
----
The hawk is my familiar from Summon Familiar. Just haven't used him yet. He's going to put his weight on the staff essentially seeing if that alone will cause it harm.
Ola knew little about familiars, only the fact that her brother never parted with his since the moment he was able to summon him. Fortunately, experiment did not end up with beautiful bird exploding or something. "Uragum, how can someone destroy a teleportation circle? Would muddying the runes work?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"If it was mere chalk or drawn into dirt you could muddle it. If its dried paint, etched, or inset then you best bet is to physically break the runes. These ones are protected, so attempts to do so could be dangerous. Though, I suspect the rod there might be involved, maybe feeding it power? Hold on a second let me check."
He then unsummons his bird and goes over to check the staff.

Ritual: detect poison and disease

He will then begin to cast his spell again.
I dont actually have detect magic, only identify.

Are the zombies wearing clothes? Do they have pockets? Sylyra is bored, so he loots the zombies.
Also, how convincing are the gold-painted wood coins?
The hawk flies to the rod, perching atop it to no effect.
The zombies are not wearing clothing, and only have natural pockets, in which there probably lies no loot worth looking for.
The paint used on the coins is a convincing color from afar, but their deceptive nature is evident on sight closer up.

Now that he's sure the area is relatively safe, Arnald goes and retrieves the arrows he fired earlier.

Is this the very bottom of the staircase, or are there more floors?
Might as well investigate the murals to see if there's anything to find there (hidden messages or perhaps secret doors).
