Tales are told throughout Golarion of shadowy figures that lurk in dark corners—stories recounted at children’s bedsides feature bestial creatures that come out only when the moon is right, and fireside legends speak of otherworldly beings beyond reckoning, whose very existence is more than the human mind can bear to know. These are the legends that explain where the blood of the family cow went, and why clerics spend so much time ensuring the proper Pharasmin rites are observed at grave sites throughout the Inner Sea. One can write them off as simple, scary stories in Absalom or Westcrown, but in Ustalav, everyone knows the truth of the things that go bump in the night.

Welcome to a 5e Adaptation of Carrion Crown, a set of adventures in the Pathfinder Adventure Path intended to take players from level 1 - 20. These adventures in particular are built to be in a Gothic Horror sort of vein...think Frankenstein, Dracula, and the like. So let's get down to the brass tacks for recruiting: Word of warning, if you don't read this then I know you won't read the thread...You will not be selected for the adventure.
Ability Scores: I have come to the conclusion that 3d6 is not really what 5e wants if you look at the standard array, so I have come up with my own ability score rolling algorithm. If you want to roll you may roll 3d4dl1+7 6 times. This gives each ability score a range of 9 - 15 and will generally edge out the standard array and point just barely.
So, 3d4dl1+7 or pointbuy at standard array level (27 points).
If you decide to roll you must keep what you roll unless you get something with a point buy equivalent less than 21 points, in which case you may switch to pointbuy.
Level: Everyone starts at level 1
Backgrounds: I have built custom backgrounds based on the campaign traits in Pathfinder. You can find them here. Only these 6 backgrounds are campaign legal, they give you a tie in to the campaign's beginning. Because these are homebrew I reserve the right to take a second look at them as we go along if they are under or overpowered, and will be open to feedback on them.
Recommended Reading: I strongly recommend you read over the Pathfinder Players Guide for this module, which you can find here. It is a free pdf purchase from the Paizo website. This will give you some helpful direction on race and class choices, although the last twist I am about to tell you will factor into that as well. Also also, keep in mind that book is Pathfinder system, so not all comparisons will be 1 to 1. I can help translate stuff if needed.
The final twist: This will be a Playtester's campaign. That means none of the published races or subclasses are available for selection. Instead, you must select from the unpublished materials currently in UA playtesting as well as Homebrew creations found on this site by contributors. Some caveats on the homebrew materials: For a race or subclass to be considered it must have at least 10 rating votes and more positive than negative (rating threshold of at least +1). If this hurdle is cleared I will then review the option for balance before approving. For example, the race GOD (Too Powerful do not use) is an extreme example of something that is clearly not balanced and would not be allowed. (+30 to each ability score...argh!) Generally speaking races and subclasses should be balanced (at least on paper) against the races and subclasses that can be found in published materials. The idea behind this twist is to have fun in the campaign while also hopefully generating some helpful feedback for our homebrew community.
For spells and feats we will be using published materials because if we went homebrew everything then there would be zero foundation.
Level Advancement: Level Advancement will be by Milestone. PF and DnD do not have very compatible experience tracks, so it is just easier to tell you when you go up a level.
HP: Max at first level of course...Once players are selected we will discuss later levels. I am open to rolling or taking the standard...but if we roll and you get a crummy hp bump thems the breaks kid.
FAQ: If there are any questions that I have not answered already I will edit in the answers here.
Background and Backstory: The Literal Teacher's Pet:
The result of an experiment on transfiguring inanimate objects into sentient creatures, Pita was sold to Professor Lorrimor for study. Imaging the shock when the dog greeted him in fluent common! Pita became interested in the studies of magic. By first learning to summon a spectral hand (mage hand) to write with, he was able to write down other spells. The professor became less of a master and more of a teacher and friend. While most students specialized in specific fields of magic, Pita learned a bit of everything, showing his progress in the evenings when he came home.
I present Goliath: a Gargoyle Barbarian - Path of the Warlord.
Background: Subject of Study.
Once a stone watchman over the place of Lorrimor work. Through spells and incantations Goliath was given life. Following orders to protect the grounds until his body crumbles. He did so gladly, Lorrimor wasn’t the first wizard or scholar that would pace before Goliath. Over years and years he stood in silence.... learning the art of war. Loyal to his word, he follows the summons awaiting his next order.
Telantha has left the forests of her home to learn more about the other people of the world. She has always been curious and thus felt the need to learn more about the folk out there. She soon found that there was a thing called money, which she did not have. She quickly learned that there were those who could take money from others, and thought this was as good a way to get some as any other, so started picking pockets as well. She soon had many friends among the criminal faction and her light-hearted attitude was quick to earn her their friendship and loyalty.

That's a very interesting build...The AP does assume that you have been seperated from Professor Lorrimor for a time and are summoned to the town at the event of his death because you were written into his will. If selected your character will have finished his under studies at the Leipidstadt University and gone out into the wider world as a kind of journeyman apprentice. Since that time the Professor will have retired to the town of Ravengro with his daughter. This is where the tragic death that begins the adventure occurs.
I do have a question about the Fey-Bred Corgi as a race. If they have the bodies of Corgis as the race write up seems to indicate...do they have the ability to manipulate items? Weild weapons, open doors, pop a cork and drink a potion, etc. I understand that Pita would be able to with the mage hand...but since the "...hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds..." that might be a bit of a problem at times? The dagger that Pita possesses, how will he wield it should the need arise?
While not written in the race write up, I would be inclined to give the race a natural bite attack. Corgi's do not have particularly vicious bites...perhaps 1d3+strength, and a strength attack bonus to hit, can't be used with dex. Thoughts? In particular do you think this would still be a balanced race or would we need to remove or limit one of the other racial features to add in the bite attack?

I think that one fix is for Pita's arcane focus to be a collar badge. That frees up his paws. He can wield the dagger with his mouth. Regarding the limitations of being a dog, it's a limitation that I'll have to think on the fly to work around, and it would make for great RP at times. I think he should be fine without the bite attack. He would use his mage hand a lot. Plus, what he does covers stuff the party can't do (wizard magic), and vice versa (having opposable thumbs and being tall.)
I really prefer to keep it restricted to subclasses that have gotten at least a little bit of thought and feedback from the community at large (hence the minimum 10 votes net positive rule). Having said that, I will review your subclass and compare it against currently published druid subclasses and give you a more definitive answer tomorrow.

Fate smiled on you and Professor Lorrimor one day in the not so distant past. Through a matter of pure chance, you were in a position to save the late scholar’s life and did so. His gratitude was effusive, and he promised that he would never forget you. You are unsure of the nature of the summons in his will, but believe he may have listed you as a possible heir in thanks for saving him from an untimely demise.
Bowser was raised in a loving home and turned away from his chromatic heritage. He uses his sword to help others - and make some money on the side. Professor Lorrimor was one of the few people Bowser remembered in his travels.

At first I was concerned about Half-Dragon because it is patently better than dragonborn as published...but as I dug in more I came to realize that dragonborn probably on one of the weaker teirs of published races...so on the whole I think Half-Dragon is acceptable as written.
DragonKnight though I have concerns about. For comparing power level I looked at a Circle of the Moon Druid. I did this because I feel like the most potent ability of the class is DragonShape, which compares favorably against the combat wildshape of moon druids. Ultimately my take away is that DragonKnight punches in a whole other weight class. At level 5 you have the ability to turn into a CR 10 monster (young red dragon). At level 6 the circle of the moon druid is just getting access to CR 2 animals. Infact circle of the moon druid can never attain something as strong as CR 10. Granted, dragonshape can only be used once per long rest and it comes with a drawback in the form of exhaustion. But my initial feeling is that the shapes are still just too strong. My first shot at a rewrite would be at level 5 you can shape into a wyrmling, and then a young at level 10 and an adult as the new capstone at level 20, instead of an ancient. But honestly even then I think it might be too strong.
I am disappointed the community doesn't have any comments on this subclass, just up and down votes. I would really like additional opinions.
I am open to hearing your thoughts, especially if you see a flaw in my analysis.

I understand. And it's cool if you don't want to hassle with it. Just thought I'd ask.
Okay, So I found a benchmark to measure against. I feel like your homebrew circle lends itself favorably to be compared against Circle of Spores with a dash of Circle of the Shepherd thrown in at the end.
On the whole I like the subclass and the theme-ing you have going on. But I do feel like a few of the level abilities are stronger than their comps.
Thorn Growth is easiest to compare to Symbiotic Entity in Circle of Spores. Ultimately I feel like Thorn Growth comes out the winner of that comparison. You did drop the temp hp down to 3 per level instead of 4, but in exchange you get 5 notable buffs in contrast to two. My balance recommendation is that anytime you benefit from one of the buffs you lose a temporary hit point, representing some of the thorns breaking off. This would cut into the duration of the ability as well as be a drain on the bonus resource. Implementing this drain on the resource, it might be appropriate to bump up the number of temp HP as well. I personally am a fan of a die roll instead of a fixed number...so 1d6 per class level would likely be appropriate.
Extra Attack at level 6 is fine.
Burning Thorns seems okay, but I do feel like it would be a good thematic place to put another drain on your temp HP...probably a larger one than before given the number of thorns being ejected to drive the ability. Maybe 5?
Scorching Spirit feels like Faithful Summons (Circle of the Shepherd). The last bullet point is essentially all of Faithful Summons, but then you get a few other small buffs as well. It might be a little stronger, but not overly so.
Really looking over my feedback now that I have typed it up in whole, there isn't as much negative about it as I thought there was...Most of the stuff is pretty balanced. Think about my feedback...Let me know what you think. I am thinking I might allow it in as written, but if my thoughts spur anything I would be open to you making adjustments.

I think your analysis is warranted. I decided to forget playing a Dragon Knight and I found a build for a Rune Knight instead. This was from the Homebrew section.
hi i really interested in finding out how this campaign is gonna be with the dnd 5e rules.i used to play pathfinder and i have played a bit this campaign.
Subject of Study - Professor Lorrimor approached you aspart of his studies, as he had heard that you had survived a recent encounter with a strange monster or had another fateful encounter. Interested in the conditions of the run-in and the means by which you avoided death or injury, hemet with you and maintained frequent correspondence until several months ago. The scars of your experience and his continual reminders of the encounter prompted you to hone your skills lest you someday face the same type of creature again. The professor assisted you in this endeavor, providing you with insight into the anatomy and defenses of the creature that attacked you.
Use Skill proficiencies, Languages, and Equipment from Haunted One:
Feature: Prepared for the Foe: Years of study have improved your combat effectiveness against your chosen foe. Choose a non-humanoid creature type (Aberration, Beast, Celestial, Construct, Dragon, Elemental, Fey, Fiend, Giant, Monstrosity, Ooze, Plant, or Undead). Once per long rest when you hit an enemy of this type with a weapon attack you may treat that attack as a critical hit as if you rolled a natural 20 on the attack die.

Baldur, I must regretfully decline your application. I made it very clear in the initial post that I expected everyone to read and follow those directions as a sign of your ability to read and participate in the thread.
This being a playtester's campaign, Goliath is not an available race...which was also very clear in the initial post. It is apparent that you did not thoroughly read the post as requested.

Making Good on Promises: At some point in the past, Professor Lorrimor did you a favor under the condition that he would someday call on you to repay it. After he came to your aid, however, you never saw nor heard from him again, leaving you with a sense of unending anticipation that each day might be the day you were asked to return the favor. Yet that day never came, and your fears and anxiety about what the professor would call on you to do abated. Assuming the old man had either forgotten about you or died, you eventually assumed you’d never have to follow through on your end of the bargain. When you received word of the professor’s death, and that he had named you specifically in his will, your dread of what he
could possibly want from you has grown throughout your entire journey to Ravengro.

Yam is a tight-beaked adventurer who skulks the darkest regions of the land. He's a monster hunter. Always has been. Anyone tells you different, they're lying.

DM question: Would it be permissible to swap out shortbow for hand crossbow as starting equipment?
In answer to your question, I have no problem with you having a hand crossbow instead of a short bow in your initial equipment. I am not really clear why the hand crossbow costs 3 times the amount of the shortbow honestly.

Any consideration for our own homebrew? I have a druid I made and no matter what I do I can't seem to get it past the submission filter.
Druid - Circle of Firethorns

I understand. And it's cool if you don't want to hassle with it. Just thought I'd ask.

I am thinking I might allow it in as written, but if my thoughts spur anything I would be open to you making adjustments.

hi i really interested in finding out how this campaign is gonna be with the dnd 5e rules.i used to play pathfinder and i have played a bit this campaign.
character name : krull
race : goliath
https://ddb.ac/characters/22738304/cahexi thats my link for my character my background is this
Subject of Study - Professor Lorrimor approached you aspart of his studies, as he had heard that you had survived a recent encounter with a strange monster or had another fateful encounter.

Withdraw. To find a subclass, working with DnDB character sheets (especially subclass remotely related to the concept) proved to be impossible.

In answer to your question, I have no problem with you having a hand crossbow instead of a short bow in your initial equipment. I am not really clear why the hand crossbow costs 3 times the amount of the shortbow honestly.
