ooc From reading back through the previous posts, I can find no mention of a second entrance to the cave. Did I miss something? The main entrance is 15 feet high and 20 feet wide (that is mentioned in regard to Danfi's observations from the ledge immediately after the battle). In regards to Moira's cantrip, from what I can tell, the effect is pretty much instantaneous. A five foot high, 2.5 ft. wide wall could be cast across the entire front of the cave by casting the spell twice (which Moira can do). Doing that might give us time to take on the dragon before the kobolds can join the battle. Danfi doesn't know the information about Moira's cantrip, so, he can't provide any information on how it works nor use it to create a strategy, unless someone IC tells him how the cantrip works.
OOC thanks for the quote from Felgrimm. I missed that one. And, I misread the spell description. I interpreted the 5 ft cube as 5 ft x 5 ft x 5 ft (or 125 cubic feet) rather than 5 cubic feet.
We don't have time to build a wall of dirt in front of the cavern.
ooc after some searching, the area of effect for a spell is a little more complex. According to the Player's Handbook (pg. 204), a spell that effects a five foot cube, effects a cube that measures 5 ft x 5 ft x 5 ft (or 125 square feet). But, I don't think you can change the shape of the spell (to a 5 ft x 2.5 ft x 10 ft wall). But, it would still be possible to cast the spell four times to block the main entrance off from the kobolds. I would assume that a cantrip can be casted once per combat round (or every six seconds), so it would take less than 30 seconds to create a wall across the main entrance that is five feet high, assuming there is loose earth in the area. Depending on the size of the kobold entrance, I would assume that an additional spell casting would block that entrance off as well.
In regard to the "loose earth," most caves that were inhabited by humans in the past contained a midden (trash deposit) in front of the cave. The midden would be loose earth, and I'm assuming that the kobolds would also have a midden in front of their caves (I know about the relationship between middens and caves because I'm an archaeologist in my real life).
“If we can’t lock them inside, then can we lure the kobolds out a few at a time? The spell casters swarms are actually quite vicious.” Alto rubs his neck where dozens of bite marks from insects are still visible.
OOC To get us moving forward, I'm going to take the assumption that (1) my interpretation of the area of effect rules is correct and (2) Moira relates this info to us.
IC After listening to the others talk about what the group is capable of, and what the cavern is like, Danfi begins to talk "Why don't we split up into two groups, one will follow the path the kobolds use, and the other group will take the direct route up to the cave. That is the route I used last night. I will go with Moira, and we'll position ourselves so that we can see both the large and small entrances to the cave. Alto, Kellin, and Torvin will comprise the other group. We can use the familiars to make sure both groups are in place before we begin the attack.
Once we get there, I will tie an oil soaked rag to one of my arrows and light the rag on fire. Moira will cast her spell to create a five foot high wall across both entrances. While she is doing that, I will shoot the flaming arrow into the cave. If I can see a kobold, or the dragon, I will aim it at the vile creature. That should get the attention of the dragon, and the wall should prevent the kobolds from immediately exiting the cavern. But, the dragon should have no problem with going over the little wall we've created. Once the dragon exits the cave, we attack it from both sides (ooc I'm assuming that the two routes will place us on opposite sides of the cave mouth). Then we just hit the dragon with everything we've got, spells, arrows, even swords. I'm hoping that with attacks coming from multiple sides, it won't know who to attack with its flame weapons. After we take the dragon down, we can worry about the kobolds. But, I do think we need to finish them off as well. If we don't finish them off, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't attack the town again after we leave. Does that sound like a workable plan to everyone?"
"Splitting the group is a bad idea when a dragon is involved." Kellin would remark, but would not be against the plan. "We should be able to handle him together, but he could easily take a few of us down at a time if we split up. I will move forward with this plan, as it seems you are adamant on catching them all, even though there is no real need to deal with all of those kobolds, as the dragon is the only real threat to the town."
"Well, Danfi and Kellin, whichever way the decision goes, I am ready. I am sure that Alto and Torvin also have a preference. After considering everything we talked about, I prefer to go in as one group and focus on the dragon. Thinking about barricades is interesting, also in terms of my profession, but it seems inefficient."
"I will get my stuff and leave the decision up to the male council. See you at the porch."
I leave the room.
Is Ify back? What did Hodil's book tell me about red dragons (vulnerabilities, resistances, special stuff...)?
Kellin will do whatever plan the others agree upon as well. He will just make it known he feels the only real threat is the dragon and that they should strike at it as a group and not split their forces.
Telcar looks at the other three men and says "When you come up with a plan that doesn't get us fried within 10 seconds because we're standing shoulder to shoulder, let me know." He then turns and leaves the building.
Torvin gives a loud sigh, gets up from the table and walks outside. Finds Hodil and apologizes for the damage that had been done leaves him what gold he has and walks out of town.

OOC: mold earth is not enough for the dimensions Siyaj mentioned. An earthen wall can always be build without magic as well. Just takes more time.

Torvin is fine with what y'all come up with.......except splitting the group.
