Bones strokes his beard in thought as Talinian tells his story. "Well," he says finally with a small cough, "As a cleric of Eusoses, of the graves, and having performed last rites previously, I'm sure that book would prove informative. As you say, your school forbids it, but perhaps some time looking over the book with some guidance from my patron I might be able to ascertain even a speck of how this book is involved and where it might take us. If as you say, this book is involved with Strong as Oak's summoning, then do we not owe it to the spirit of such a man to look at every avenue in order to put him at peace? If you were in such a place, my friend Talinian, I would not hesitate to do what I could to ease your pain and torment."
Talinian smiles fondly at this small friend. He had known it would be this way. "I do not suggest we no use the book. I ask for advice on if I should read the book or give it to the Magus and let him use it on behalf of Strong as Oak. In any event, Bones, you could not read it, I think. It is written in an obscure and old form of Elvish. So, please, how do you all think we should proceed?"
"I'm not too knowledgeable about magic, but if you can do it yourself, I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't bother anyone else with this," Pietersite gives his two coppers.
Talinian nods. "That seems wise. I will see what I can learn from the book," he says, leaves a few coins, then goes upstairs to his room. Once there he takes a few minutes to alarm his room, sits in the middle of the floor, and begins to read the book, skimming at first to see if it is one big spell, several small ones, or spells sprinkles throughout a book of arcane knowledge and research. If the spell used to summon Strong as Oak is readily identified, he will focus his time on that, trying to determine how to reverse it or seeing if the book itself has such a spell.
It is just one spell. You would know that Kersaat Pavmases (which is what this is) are like spell scrolls, most of them hold harder spells, think of them as lvl 9 spells, and even higher. Some like this one has charges to it, so to make an example there is could be another Kersaat Pavmases for Meteor Storm with a number 3 on the cover, So you could cast Meteor Storm 3 times, OR cast it at 10th or 11th lvl, which while these do not exist mechanically in the system, you would just add a d6, but it would have a 24 hour+ recharge time.
So this specific Kersaat Pavmas is for a spell, the name of which you can not really make out, but it's something along the lines of true self zombie. And you see that it has a recharge time of 1 week, and a casting time of 8 hours, total, with 6 different parts. As you look through it you do see notes in there at the end of each section, the ones that I think would catch your eye are.
“If one would manage to get this far the spirit would come to the material plain.” This page seems to be ripped a little.
“Tried this part without the pound of fresh flesh, the results were not good, while I did finish the body was soft, and any little damage would cause it to fall apart.
“The body started to move here, freaked me out, and I stopped. The results were I had zero control, barely killed the thing, I might try again in a year.”
And on the last page “Successful this time, I am exhausted, the past 8 hours were bad, physically and mentally, but well worth it, next week I will try again with my wife, then an army.”
As said previously this specific Kersaat Pavmas does still require material components, each section has a list of what is required, the list of less than honorable things on the list.
Pound of human flesh, cut from living being within the past 8 hours.
Human brain, body dead for less than 24 hours.
Live animal of less than 20 pounds but greater than 5, and less than 2 years in age.
"I'm not too knowledgeable about magic, but if you can do it yourself, I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't bother anyone else with this," Pietersite gives his two coppers.
Mialee is of similar opinion. She trusts those in their group more than those outside it.
Talinian goes back downstairs to talk to the others, his failure weighing heavily on his mind. "I was unable to locate anything in the book used to summon the spirit that will help us free it. I do not know what to do, from here. I am not certain if I can trust the Magus, though normally that would be my first option. I would welcome any thoughts any of you have on this matter."
Bones shrugs, "The offer stands for me to look over the book with aid of my patron. Otherwise, the only course of action would be to return to the museum and see what we can do to help Strong as Oak. Where did you say this mage that had the book has gone again?" Bones strokes his beard as he considers the options moving forward.
“I share my same sentiment that I trust us over a third party source. I’d be comfortable with Bone’s taking a review. I’d offer some guidance of my own if Bone’s welcomes it.”
(And if for what ever reason, if that fails too. Mia would give it a go if others are willing. She doesn’t have any mods, but would be worth a try if it’s allowed.)
"I did not say. We do not know." He looks at Bones. "As you do not speak or read elvish, I am not certain what value there is in letting another read this book which should never have been written. I have read it and am disgusted by it," he says, emotion strong in his voice. "I will tell you what." He pulls out a sheet of parchment and writes something down. "Here is a passage, one of the more innocuous ones, or at least less disgusting ones, in the original old elvish. If either of you can make anything of that," he says to Bones and Mia, "we will try the whole book."
ooc: He wrote out the spell's introduction, which discusses the necessary frame of mind and mental focus needed.
"Haterade must fill your heart, while control filling your mind. Then begin to soak the cat claws in your blood, and chant….. (Talinian leaves the words out)... use claws to stab cat.”
Talinian informs you that there is an image showing where to stab the cat with the claws.
