Let's post our ideas for characters here so we can see what the party might look like. I don't care about the composition - but you might! If you want to create a few characters to play around go right ahead!
You can choose any core race (you will have access to more - let me know if you want to use a monster race - kobold and goblin are okay for sure).
If you are ready and want to play around - use these settings. Things can be changed / fixed later!
Advancement type: XP Encumbrance: Use encumbrance Fixed or rolled HP(you can decide - but the rolls will be done on the forum so no cheating :) Show unarmed strike
We are mostly all new to the site etc. so ask any questions you have etc. There are also pre-generated characters you can play. 5th edition is new to me as well so we will learn as we go.
Stats: Point Buy or Standard Array
Equipment. . add your starting equipment as listed or purchase items
Everyone who joins this campaign will have access to the player's handbook and DMG on this site's compendium. It works great on mobile devices and an app is coming.
Looks like I may have added multiple empty characters. One of the options is Leave, but I'm not sure if that means Glen will leave or the character will leave?
I think i removed the extra ones. I fixed your hit points to max plus con bonus for1st level. Just go into equipment and "wear" items toy want on so attacks and ac update.
Hello everyone! I am starting to put together some ideas for characters. Currently I have three....
Nelly Stonebottom Race: Dwarf (Mountain) Class: Sorcerer (Stone) Role: Meatshield Summary: Gregarious and boastful, Nelly is a spirited lass with a strong preference for casting under the influence. While she is friendly and helpful, Nelly rarely takes anything too seriously, or gets too close to anyone. She likes a good joke and appreciates the finer things in life - you know, like driving your enemies before you, and hearing the lamentations of their barkeeps.
She calls herself a mighty sorcerer, which most strangers have trouble believing, given her general disposition and overlarge axe. Truth be told, she doesn't do herself any favors in this regard, as she regularly shouts out 'magical' incantations while swinging her weapon ("Arcane smite!"), kicking down doors ("Knock!"), burping ("Protection from Indigestion!"), and a hundred other mundane circumstances. Whatever the truth of it is, she gets the job done.
Erhart Friedgard
Race: Tabaxi Class: Ranger (Monster Hunter) Role: Scout/Killing Summary: From the time he was a kit, Erhart dreamed of being a hero. He collected scraps and sewed them into costumes, then sprinted through his hometown battling imagined foes and make believe monsters. It was a common sight, watching him hurtle precariously between rooftops, trusty stick-sword in hand.
Times change, and people grow up. Erhart is far from the wide-eyed, innocent youth with idealistic dreams. When his family perished during a Wight incursion, Erhard's god-uncle took him in, and taught him the real trade of monster hunting. How to be cunning. How to be ruthless. How to be harder than a dragon's claw, and twice as sharp. Erhart doesn't laugh much now. His once bright eyes are colder, focused, and always searching for danger. Maybe the heroic young boy is still inside, but if so, he keeps that child locked away.
Because he knows what this world needs even more than heroes. Killers. Killers who keep young families safe from the merciless monsters who would destroy them.
So far, I have Chantrea, human cleric. That's it, that's all. I'm pretty sure she's the one I'll play, unless everyone else wants to play a cleric, too. LOL
Quick note for everyone - I am very open to collaborative character backgrounds, or just having known connections between characters. Anything from friendships to rivalries. I like interesting character inter-dynamics. :)
I would like to start the game next week (October 1st). I want to give people a chance to finish character and decide on their background.
Setting
The game takes place in the Forgotten Realms (Sword Coast). The area you will be in could fit in most fantasy settings. Don't feel that you need to be a Forgotten Realms lore expert (I am not and I will take many liberties!).
I will explain rules as we go and I learn them :)
Character Backgrounds
- Your background is up to you except that you will start the game travelling together escorting a wagon (see Adventure Hook below - I posted the entire thing but please don't respond In Character to it yet). You will all know the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker in some way. We could go for the "Ocean's Eleven" thing where he has gathered previous known associates to work together on this. . OR you could all be part of an adventuring company of some kind (newly or loosely formed - maybe for misfits since you have a goblin). The last idea would mean that you have reason to trust each other somewhat (even if only because it has been convenient or profitable in the past). You can discuss this as a group and decide.
Posting and Combat
I will try to check in / reply every day for questions etc. I will post game updates at least every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (if I miss one it will be the next day - may switch the schedule if other days seem to work best for people). If people feel the pace can go faster we can do that. I don't want it to be much slower than 3 days a week. I don't want to overwhelm and lose anyone either. Let me know what you think.
For combat we can do it one of two ways or a hybrid (please give thoughts on this):
1. I post the initiative order and we post in turn, one at a time. . so player 1 acts. . then player 2 after seeing the result. This is more like table-top and could be more tactical and is the slower of the two options
2. You give me your "orders" for the round and I work them out as closely as possible to what I think you would do with you giving me a back-up plan. This makes combat go much faster but leaves you at my mercy at times.
Option 3 would be a mix with me stopping or PMing for changes based on events. So I get your orders and then if your intended target is killed I let you revise. I have only ever played in games that used one of the first two.
Adventure Hook
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."
You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
and that you can link skills, spells etc. to help me out!
ow do the tooltips/links to spells etc work?
D&D Beyond offers the ability to link certain aspects on the forum in mouse-over triggered tooltips, such as magic items, monsters or combat actions - examples being Adult Black Dragon and dash. To create tooltips in this way as these, use the appropriate [tag][/tag] around the desired subject.
Example: [ magicitem]sunblade[/ magicitem] (Without spaces within the [ ] brackets.)
Use the following within the [ ][/ ] bracket system: action - an action taken in combat condition - a condition afflicted upon a creature item - a mundane item magicItem - a magical item monster - a creature you can encounter sense - a type of extra sense, whether magical or natural skill - this is used for professions spell - a magical spell wprop - a property of a weapon
I should also point out that I am a fan of using different stats for skill checks when it makes sense. . it. . intimidate using a DEX check if you want to casually flip a dagger around. . . maybe a mage could be intimidated with an INT check etc. if you are debating something.
I voted for the full round option. It's not too hard to write in "And if X dies, my character attacks Y instead" as a footnote if we're really worried about it.
Combat is the slowest part of pbp, so anything that speeds it up is generally a good thing. :)
Darrien Mord Race: Tiefling (or similar) Class: Warlock (Hexblade) Role: Face/Jack-of-all Summary: An infamous bard once said, "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." What he neglected to mention were the bloody bastards who steal greatness from the hands of worthier souls - bastards like Darrien Mord.
Rakish, clever, infuriating, and charming - not all of those at once - Darrien possesses all of the courageous wit and boundless luck of a swashbuckling hero... without all the pesky heroism. One might blame his parentage for the lad's personality, his mother being a demonic corsair from the abyss, and his father a captain in the Carrion Fleet. He mostly grew up in the latter, until he was forced to part with his family on somewhat ill terms. "No imagination, my father. Nothing but rules and traditions, there. But what is the point of pillaging if you can't even enjoy it? I swear, the man had no joy in his heart even before I tried to carve it out."
Presently Darrien is on holiday. No piracy. No murder. No dark rituals to bind the wretched souls of hapless victims. For now, Darrien is determined to explore a different and brighter way of living - that of the 'hero'.
Maybe he's just hiding from an implacable undead scourge. Maybe it's a youthful rebellion thing. Maybe it's just because when heroes slaughter people and take their stuff, everyone claps and cheers. Either way, Darrien Mord has sworn off the dark path of treachery and evil, for as long as it is entertaining and convenient to do so. It's not like he'd actually start to like anyone, form friendships, and have to actually care about them, right? Right?
TL;DR: An evil, charming bastard... but he's your evil, charming bastard. :)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
you have to take out the spaces between the [ and the 'roll' also the little icon on the top of your post is the easiest. It also handles advantage (you roll 2 and take highest) and disadvantage (roll 2 and take lowest). Give it a shot :) WHOAAA they just updated it with three tabs. . man they are working solid on this thing.
Attack: 23 Damage: 10
This was an attack with +3. . 1d8+1d6 for damage and +3 damage modifier
Man. . I like all 3 characters. At first I was partial to Nelly but all 3 would be fun. I will fill in a role that is not met by the party with an NPC directed by my wife in an attempt to get her hooked. ;)
Chantrea (Shan-tray-uh) is a human female in her early twenties. She has long, pale blonde hair, green eyes and fair skin. Her build is slight, and she's on the shorter end for her race, around 5 feet, 4 inches. Her clothing is simple in colour and design, but good in quality. She often wears pale blue, pale green or violet robes and shifts, but she has plate armor for the when the occasion calls. She carries a nondescript shield, a shortbow and a large club.
As a traveling companion, Chantrea does her best to help. She uses her divine magic to heal and protect those around her, and is always wishing she could do more. She prays often to her chosen deity, the elven goddess Sehanine Moonbow.
Anyone who has interacted with Chantrea will find her quiet and polite, treating most around her with respect and kindness. However, she doesn't smile, and her eyes carry a haunted look. It's clear she has a troubled past, and won't speak of it.

I totally heard your 'Adventure Hook' in the voice of the narrator from Icewind Dale.
I agree, speedier is better.
