For ages, they and their ancestors had been enslaved and oppressed by the flying reptiles, and old hatreds die hard. Not so with Mid. For him, this was a new world, and that meant he could no longer rely on his ancestors' experiences blindly. He had to see, learn, for himself. He took to traveling, fighting evil and protecting the innocent wherever he went, and tried to learn as much as he could - especially about dragons. What he learned, particularly about the celebrated Silvers, wise Golds and righteous Bronze dragons filled him with joy and drove him to seek them out. He was especially interested in meeting a Silver, since he considered himself a distant relative, and such dragons were to be found, he learned, on the high mountain tops and in cold climates. Appearance: Half-Ear Heara is frankly put, not an imposing figure. A wiry, short woman standing only 5'3" and weighing only 135 pounds, she doesn't compare to a lot of the hardened folk of the north. Her dark chocolate colored skin and half-elven features doesn't help her blend in either. The final nail in the coffin is surprisingly the rapier she keeps at her belt, a weapon not fit for any survival situation. At least she's got a shortbow to hunt with if absolutely necessary. Wearing a thick tunic of red wool, grey woolen trousers, thick boots, gloves, leather armor overtop it with a matching satchel, and a matching cloak and hood, she at least has the clothing to match her environment.
Backstory: Haera has no last name. At least, if she has one, she doesn't know it. That'd require her knowing who her parents were. All she knows is that she was dumped on the doorstep of a Waterdeep orphanage as a baby. She knows her childhood could have been worse, but she figures it couldn't have been by much. She suffered the problem many half-elves suffer, isolation. The rest of the children were human, and the caretaker was almost entirely indifferent to what her wards did. As long as they didn't severely injure each other or cause trouble, she frankly did not care. This led to... a lot of bullying. It's always the one who's different.
It wasn't complete isolation for her though. She had one singular friend in the orphanage, another girl named Janice. One of the few people she could admit was worse off than her, even if she did so in her mind. Her parents were merchants, who's ship caught fire in the bay. A few survivors got out, but her parents didn't make it. And the ashes got into her eyes, leaving her blind. The two were the main targets of bullying. If the adult in her life wasn't gonna help her, then she'd herself. Heara grew a scrappy nature and a quick temper, especially involving Janice. You insult Heara, you walk away with a black eye. You insult Janice, you walk away with a limp. That sort of thing.
This got her into a fair bit of trouble with the caretaker, who Janice had to talk down. They grew up like this, with Heara growing quick on her feet and Janice growing a silver tongue. What free time they had, Janice sang and Heara danced. It was their way of relaxing. As they grew older though, Heara... didn't keep up physically. When everyone hit fifteen years of age and got booted out, she was still the size of a twelve year old. The caretaker didn't care, the rule was the rule. This left the two of them on the streets, and need of quick income. Heara thought of something relatively quickly.
They became performers, wandering from inn to inn. Janice put her singing voice to work while Heara danced. It made them some money. Not a lot, but enough to get by. As time went on, Janice got better, and Heara got older. They spent a couple years doing this song and dance routine until eventually something changed. A local theater troupe approached them. They wanted Janice to join in, to sing opera. She was flattered, but there was an issue. They weren't offering Heara a job. That night the two sat down and Heara had done the hardest thing of her life up until that point. She told Janice to take the offer.
She was old enough that she could find work by herself, and Janice deserved better than going from inn to inn, living off threadbare clothes. There was an argument, but eventually, Heara convinced her to take it. So that morning, Heara guided Janice to the theater, left her in the hands of one of the other opera singers, and said goodbye. Not forever, as she fully planned on checking up with her at least once per week. But for the first time in years, the two were apart.
A few months passed with Heara passing from odd job to odd job, not settling down, not being able to find anything she could stick with. Janice got herself settled in at the theater and attracted a small fan base. She met someone there, a nice young actor who thoroughly enjoyed her company. She didn't need Heara anymore, so she finally took the plunge. There was a merchant ship, Gilded Gale, who was in need of some new crew. She signed on, and told Janice the next day. Waterdeep... wasn't her home. She didn't belong and never had. She wouldn't miss it, just Janice. There was a heartfelt farewell, and then she was off to sea.
For the next three years, Heara served aboard the Gilded Gale, seeing the world and learning the ins and outs of the ship. Captain Duran, who she signed under, proved a stern, but fair man to work under. Not the strongest of sailors, she quickly proved herself adept at keeping a steady hand and steady foot on the decks. Of course, any time the ship pulled into Waterdeep, Heara spent all her time visiting Janice. Sharing stories of what she saw, and just generally checking up on the woman. Who was rapidly getting her own life, and had even had kids!
Good things can't last forever though. On a trip north to the city of Luskan, the Gilded Gale got caught in the grip of a terrible winter storm. It had such power behind it that it dragged the ship far far off course. It was a constant struggle to keep the girl afloat through driving wind, thick falling snow, and the pounding of the waves. It was a struggle that proved for nothing, as in the almost complete blindness of the blizzard, the ship drove itself aground on a iceberg. Torn to shreds on the hunk of ice, Heara was tossed into the frigid waters as the Gilded Gale screamed in agony as ropes snapped and timbers shattered.
The shock of the cold knocked her instantly out, and she didn't come to until much later. Being warmed by a fire in a small fisherman's hut on the coast of the Sea of Churning Ice, a woman cleaning fish beside her. Somehow, she survived the frigid waters while unconscious and washed ashore with only a moderate amount of frostbite. The rest of her crew-mates weren't so lucky, as body after body washed ashore. She stayed with those fishermen just long enough to ensure that the bodies got proper rites and pyres, before setting off for the biggest settlement in Icewind Dale, Bryn Shander. Her hope, that she could get a caravan back south to Luskan.
She made it to the town eventually, and settled in to wait for a caravan. She waited. And waited. And waited some more. Caravans had become few and far between, and so she was stuck in the frigid hellscape without a whole lot to do. Odd jobs where she could, enough to keep herself fed and alive. It is starting to weigh on her though, being trapped in the town, just stuck there. The first chance of something interesting happening, well. She'd likely jump right on it. Gotta have at least one nice story to tell Janice for whenever she gets back to Waterdeep, right?

Level: 1 Name: Nox Blackflame Race: Goblin Class: Rogue (planning Arcane Trickster) Background: Faction Agent Backstory: As a young goblin, Nox grew up on--well mostly under--the streets of Luskan. Freezing and starving one winter, he was found by a kindly sailmaker who carried Nox to his small home. The man and his wife served Nox and another traveler food pulled from a wooden box in the kitchen and gave them a place to sleep. In the night, the goblin arose and grabbed the box, delighted to have found such a prize. To cover his escape, he lit the home on fire and ran into the night. Once he thought he had passed out of reach of any pursuit, he opened up the box. Inside he found three crusts of bread. The sailmaker and his wife had shared all but their very last food with him, and in return he had robbed them and burned their home. The goblin flung the box down in both anger and sorrow, and then was sent reeling to the ground by a powerful blow. He looked up into the eyes of the other traveler. The traveler, a servant of Lathander, had managed to put out the fire before it had done any real damage, and then had come after the goblin. Rather than kill him, she declared that the goblin would serve her for three years, one for every crust of bread in the box. Over the next three years, Nox served as the traveler's servant, then as her acolyte and friend. Through her, he came to join the Harpers and, after swearing his own oaths to Lathander as a layman rather than a priest, he was sent on his first mission from the Harpers, to investigate the neverending winter in Icewind Dale.
