"I don't think the disease was natural. This makes it sound like they did something to infect the rats."Rowan holds out the note so anybody who is interested can take it and read it. "We should definitely get that arm looked at, though, and try to inform anyone who was bitten in the market. I'm sure the rats out here will die on their own soon enough."
As she runs over the contents of the note in her head again, she suddenly has a thought. Walking over to the musician, she searches him for a ring matching Doloran's, or anything else with a similar symbol. She initially thought 'expendable' referred to some random person they grabbed from the streets, but it could be an unfortunate, low-ranking member of whatever organization they were in.
Investigation: 24
You find no ring, tattoo or other incriminating evidence. However, you do find a ribbon about the size to fit around the pipes tucked into one of his pockets that says. "From your biggest fan. Play it for me, XOXO!"
At Ann's remark Bryn smiles and then laughs, "No, we were not trying to keep secrets. I've been away from my home for several of your years speaking common most of the time, it's just nice to be able to speak to someone in my native tongue it was meant to be spoken instead of the version I get at markets and such."
“That part about the cursed Fish... I think that be someone, a criminal I’m after. But does it mean they cursed the Fish, or cursed be the Fish for bad pipes?
False goods would match my understanding of Fish as a swindler, huxster, and phony unloved by dwarvish craftsfolk for forgery and fakery. But I wonder about the relationship? Do any of you know a vendor called the Fish? It couldn’t be this bloke blowin’ the pipes could it? Master Talon perhaps after breakfast we can question him and this ringleader one, yeh?”
Jormund looks decided upon hauling the red-robe-turned-rat to find out more. He pulls out a length of robe, gags the robed-rat-man, and trusses him up for minimal fuss portage. “Shall we get back to Amphail?”
"The pipes are enchanted by some sort of carving. There was a second carving added after the original in the shape of a fish. I'm pretty sure that's what cursed the player to turn into a rat-man. It could be related to the name of this criminal you're after, though. Maybe they're the one who made the new carving,"Rowan theorizes.
"The musician was just a commoner, tricked into being part of this. We should take him with us into town to see if there’s anybody who knows how to turn him back."She hooks her arms under the musician-rat-man's and tries to heft him up, then realizes that people are pretty heavy. "A little help?"
Jared's cheerful demeanor changes to one of shock and he says, a bit too loud, in a voice too high in pitch. "I got bit by those rats. Do you think I got infected as well?"
Jared says little else. He will find a place away from any of the trash heap and muck, taking some water from his waterskin, wetting his hands and the bite or bite marks then takes out his soap and scrubs the spots as best he can. "Can't believe I got bit by rats. What would my mum think? She'd think yer a damn fool Jared L. Talon, that's what she'd think." he mutters to himself as he cleans the bite marks.
As he does this he will listen to the party's conversation. If the party goes to leave Jared will pack up as quickly as he can and follow along.
Will nod to Ann, and turn back to Bryn. "Mayhaps I should speak openly and tell the others as well. This danger may come back to us all in the end."
Vedui will gather the others, and share what he has found. "The albino fighter I fought, while he did not know me he recognized my origin. You see, we both have the same branding." Vedui will open his tunic, showing the skull and crossbones brand in the center of his chest. It is not a tattoo, but burned scar tissue. "He has the same. It is from an order I once belonged to..he must have recognized my fighting style, as it is distinctive for those in the know. This order is not nice, they study death and are cruel and vile. I have run far to escape. At first I thought he was after me, but then I heard him speak to someone through these stones. When I grabbed the stone from him I also heard a voice. Whoever was on the other end now knows of us....if not our names. I am sure they will find out about me. Perhaps he was reporting to a different chapter, but news will travel to my original chapter in Thay, and I will be hunted here. "
After a pause...
"Perhaps they are working with others. I am curious about the triangle he has added, this is not part of the markings of my former order..."
I have one of the stones, wrapped in a leaf. I am not so familiar with magic if someone wants to study this"

((Lol, my bad. Got a bit ahead of myself there! Editing my post to fix it.))
“I can try to look at the stone if you’d like,”Rowan offers. If he doesn’t object, she’ll carefully take it, making sure not to touch it, and examine it to try and discern how it works.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
When Vedui starts to share the information about his past Jormund starts to reconsider the elf and looks at him intently. When he opens his tunic, his brow furrows and one of his eyebrows raises, a bushy black highlight to his curiosity and possible skepticism... When he hears the word "Thay", he starts to look like he may have uncomfortably swallowed something...

Rowan, you take some time to examine the stone and discover that it is one-half of a set of Sending Stones. Sending Stones.
Also,
After hearing Jormund talk about a dwarven vendor named the Fish, you recall that you encountered a dwarven man selling magic items on the way out of town. His name was Tang though...

"You know, come to think of it, I met a merchant selling magic items earlier today. He said he was on his way to Waterdeep. It's probably good I didn't buy anything from him..."
Rowan passes the stone back, still keeping it wrapped in the leaf but noticeably less nervous about it. "The stone is part of a pair. It can send a message to whoever has the other once a day. I don't think we have to worry about eavesdroppers, but it can't hurt to be careful."
Vedui's words seem honest an true as far as anyone can tell. In particular, he seems shamed by what he says next "It was a cult, obsessed with death. Warriors of death. Sometimes called 'The Order of the Long Death'. I was raised there....I left them, more escaped and was hunted for a time. But we are far from Thay, and I thought never to see their like again. I can guess this man was from a different chapter, as while he recognized what I was, he did not know of me. I am unaware of any other chapters, but they may exist. The world is large."
"More immediately, someone may know we are coming back. Our description was given."
Jared makes a mental note of all that Vedui tells. Thay does have long fingers, to my mind." Jared says. Jared turns to the original Piper and asks: "What's yer name, if I may ask? If ya said already I missed it so it's why I am asking."
"If they are the one's what did this to innocent people, let them come, I've got an arrow or two that'll be happy to greet them and see that justice is done."

To Vedui the dwarf says, "It is true that none of us chooses our rearing but only how we grow when we've gone from it. Your bringing-up has a done us a favor in knowing more of our enemy and that they may know too much of us. I name them renders of the great Mail and foe of good-folk. What kind of caution do you think we need?"
"You know, come to think of it, I met a merchant selling magic items earlier today. He said he was on his way to Waterdeep. It's probably good I didn't buy anything from him..."
Jormund's eyes light up and he turns to Rowan, "What did this merchant look like? What was he called? And aye!, probably best he didn't get your business and you his... To Waterdeep you say?"
Then he looks over at Jared and the piper. "Did he come to?" (( and he wander & looks to see, did the transformation halt at half man, half rat? ))
To anyone who knows, "And where do ye reckon we can take these illness-makers for safe keeping and assured justice?"
Jared leans down, his face close to the rat piper man, and raises his voice a bit. "ARE YOU AWAKE?" he asks. "WHAT IS YOUR NAME?" Jared will our a bit of water over the piper's face in an attempt to wake the man up if he is out.
