"Right, the guards..." she sits there pondering for a moment "I have an idea. But do any of you know how to forge handwriting?"
What do you have in mind?
She takes out a letter, signed in very neat handwriting. "This was a letter from the leader of this city. I uh... borrowed... it... from him. You could use this to forge an invitation to meet the king."
Caya turns to Lirah. "If you aren't sure this cellar is safe, I could put you under the protection of the Linxakasendalor clan. If you bear a letter with my signet seal, they'll offer you refuge. Up to you." She smiles at the princess, happy to help a fellow dragonborn should the need arise.
She smiles back at you. "Thank you, but I'll just be resting here for now. This may not be the safest or cleanest place, but I've been hiding out here since I was a child. I'll be fine here for the moment, but I think later that will be safer."

Caya nods. "Does anybody have some paper, a pen, and sealing wax? I want to write Lirah a letter to my parents should she decide to seek refuge with my clan."
Brightmoon beckons the party aside and whispers "I may be able to forge the invitation as she suggested, but I will need a forgery kit. I think I saw a shop called the Forgery Guild that may have what is needed. What do the rest of you think? It sounds very risky to me but she seems sincere."
Looking at Caya "They will probably have the supplies you need as well, if no one has them already."
Polly speaks up. "It does seem risky. Risky's usually fun, but sometimes it's death. Death's not fun. Let's get the idea straight. We're to talk our way into the castle with a letter forged in the hand of the leader of this city saying we are to meet the king. Then we get inside, assuming the guards approve, and then talk to the king, strangers telling him we're supposed to meet with him, but really we're here to convince him not to prolong the civil war. Seems a tall order. I had a squadmate in my old mercenary company who could listen in on people's thoughts. And also make them feel like they were best friends. Can anyone here do that? I'm pretty good at changing my appearance and talking my way into places."
She pauses, looks around, and drops her form of a plain villager to appear as her spiky-headed, armored self, and then cycles through looking exactly like each member of the group, including, finally, the princess. Staying in her form, but still sounding the same, she says, "I assume it would be bad to show up to the gates looking like this. But what if I looked like the leader of the city?"

"I know an idiot who can read thoughts, but my magic is mostly good for helping people rather than tricks."
"Lirah, I'll buy supplies and write you your letter in case you want to seek refuge with my family."
Turning to Polly, Cayasinia shakes her head. "I don't that sort of magic, although I can heal us if we get into a fight. I suppose I could pretend to be your bodyguard if you are acting as the city leader. I certainly look the part."

Brightmoon looks at Halfast "Great Idea, I will join you as a servant. Most people don't see them and talk as if they are not even there. We both can learn a lot that way"
Lirah looks up. "Um, the Forgery Guild is a blacksmith, but that One Wave store should have what you need."

"How does a princess happen to know of such things? And why did you steal this letter?'
(Can we read the letter?)
Still seems truthful
"I used to sneak out of the castle a lot, and I use that gate in these ruins' last tower to get here. The letter, well... its a long story, but I swear to the gods themselves I'm not trying to hurt you guys."
The letter is just a tax notice from the leader, its nothing of interest.
Halfast reads the entire tax notice.

To the residence of the Rochet family. You have failed to pay any of your taxes within the past month. You have one week to pay your taxes or you will have your belongings stripped from you. --Leader Ruhn

She seems to be truthful, and actually wants to help this kingdom.
Caya nods. "Does anybody have some paper, a pen, and sealing wax? I want to write Lirah a letter to my parents should she decide to seek refuge with my clan."

You know of no family named Rochet.
"Lirah, why is a tax notice so important, who is this family?"
Blackmon ask knowing that blackmail and prestige are powerful tools in a royal court.
"*Sigh* so many questions. It's just an outdated tax notice, I found it discarded on the street. Its just for forging the leader's handwriting."
