I know there is another RoW campaign out there, so hopefully I am not committing some faux pas by starting my own. I have been running the game for my IRL group for two and a half years now and we're about to reach the final battle, but I'm not ready to say goodbye to the adventure path yet. Any interested parties should check out the free player's guide from Paizo and apply here with the following:
Character Name: Race: (PHB and hexblooded only, no dragonborn) Class: (PHB, XGE, TCE only) Ability Scores: (standard array or point buy) Brief Backstory:
Starting level is level 1, and we will use maximum starting gold instead of starting equipment. I recommend having a little leftover to spend.
Note: this is a Pathfinder adventure but we WILL be playing 5e D&D.
Here's a sample of my posts; it's what I'm working on for my Norse-themed campaign:
It is the first day of the year 1518 A.V.W., and the first day of spring; Varbod, as it is called, or "Springfest" in the common tongue. Our story begins at the meadhall of the small town of Hedmark. Rows of long tables filled with humans, dwarves, and the odd halfling or two, pack the hall tightly, and it's all the servants can do to navigate through the excitable crowd to bring plates heaped with meats, cheeses, and bread to those who have finished their first or second serving, and mead to those who are already deep in their cups. You watch the excitement from a place of privilege, seated at the head table to the left of the host. Tonight, you sup on only the finest cuts of lamb, and drink only the best aged mead. Even from the head table, it is difficult to hear yourself think over the din of conversation.
You have had the opportunity this past year to get to know many of the faces you see before you; there's Agni Ulagson, the town's blacksmith. You know that his daughter, Eira, has been proposed to by several young gentlemen, none of which Agni has found worthy of wedding his daughter. There's Thorgren Harshnag, a jewelry-maker. For this Varbod, you may have donned several of his gifts to you to dress better for the occasion. And who could forget Helga, the town's resident shaman who saw the people through a harsh winter.
The noise of the crowd suddenly dies down, as you see your host, Jarl Sigrid Vradnrdottir, standing atop the table, demanding everyone's attention. She is a tall woman, thickly built, with long and braided brown hair. As soon as the hall goes quiet, save for the errant belch, she looks over the people in the hall and says, with a straight face, "I don't think I've ever met a sorrier sack of gluttons and lushes than you lot in my life."
The silence continues for a moment. Then, from the crowd, there is a slight chuckling. The jarl's face cracks into a grin, and soon the hall is filled with uproarious laughter. Sigrid holds her horn high and declares, "Happy Varbod, you sorry lot! You crafters!" A cheer from the crowd. "You builders!" Another cheer. "You drinkers!" A third cheer that dwarfs the first two. "Of course, none of this would be possible without the guests of honor for today's feast!" She gestures to you. "Without them, I would not be where I am tonight, and you would still be fighting over who is to rule you now. Of course, you've heard the stories, but let us hear them again tonight!" A cheer rises from the crowd, and Sigrid turns to you. "Come on, then! It's custom for guests to share stories of their adventures when invited to a feast!"
Take this moment to describe yourself, and we will get into the "flashback" afterwards.
I know there is another RoW campaign out there, so hopefully I am not committing some faux pas by starting my own.
As a comment on this, I have a bit of experience on these forums, and there's no reasonable argument that'd put what you're doing in a bad light. If they say something about it, it probably makes no sense, to begin with.
I do intend to join, if possible, but I'll have to find my way to reading that document first, as I have no clue what I'm expecting yet.
The fact that the DM added XGtE, and Tasha's to the list of accepted classes made me think not. I wouldn't know how to play Pathfinder if we were to do it, though, so that's a valid question.
Name: Ares Race: Half-Elf Class: Ranger Ability Score: Point Buy Alignment: Neutral Good Background: Folk Hero Back Story: Ares has lived in Heldren all his life. His father, a Half-Elf ranger, and his mother, a Half-Elf Sorceress, have lived in this small, quiet community for many years, raising a family. Ares, the firstborn of 4 children, grew up in the woods and harsh winters of Heldren learning his father's trade and flourishing. Now grown, Ares hopes to start out on his own and make a name for himself. He has done a couple of deeds locally (saving a local girl and her grandmother from a lone wolf attack and bringing down a large elk, giving a portion of the meat to a couple of the families in need) that have earned him the trust of a few of the residence. One thing of note, Ares' parents, though skilled, say little about why they came to Heldren. Ares suspects something but says little about it. https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/leapingmountain/characters/45011396
Character Name: Cora Leagallow Race: Stout Halfling (Modified +1 to Con to +1 in Wis) Class: Cleric (Grave Domain) Ability Scores: Standard Array Brief Backstory: A child of a necromancer, Cora grew up around the dead and recently deceased. Her father had long been interested in bringing the dead back to life, though Cora could never understand why. The dead should stay dead, and move on into the afterlife. Her mother shared this idea, and around the time Cora was 8 her and her mother left her father and the town they lived in for greener pastures... so to speak. They spent some time on the road, before finally taking shelter in a small building neighboring a graveyard. And at that point, she and her mother became the caretakers of that graveyard, ensuring those recently dead would never rise into undeath. When she was old enough Cora entered the small priesthood dedicated to Pharasma, swearing to end the undead menace, no matter who was raising them. Even her father should it come to that.
Character Name: Leshanna Race: Variant Eladrin Class: Wizard (Conjuration) Ability Scores: point buy Brief Backstory:
Leshanna is a bounty hunter out of the Fey Wilds. She takes jobs to hunt down those who flee from justice. Justice itself she could take or leave, but the hunt is everything to her. She loves pitting her skills against those of her quarry, and is known to take on the more difficult missions whenever available.
Character Name: Initish(Character Sheet) Race: Tiefling Class: Sorcerer (Shadow Magic) Ability Scores: Point-Buy Backstory: Ini's story is fractured and partly forgotten, even though she's young. She was born the only daughter of a noble family. She used to live way further south, belonging to the other side of the border. Her parents were well respected, but she knew well of the darkness they hid behind their masks. One day, she escaped them. That's the extent of what she knows, the "how" is a mystery, but the scars on her body don't tell her anything good. The only thing clear in her memory is the recent past. A few months back, she woke up in Heldren with nothing except a ring, some bloody bandages, and her clothes. She's lived so far with the help of locals, doing small jobs so she can eat and sleep out of the streets.
(I almost made a Barbarian, to balance the people who've made characters so far, but this idea just came to me, and now I'm afraid I wouldn't know how to make a different character and still post it today.)
Before I go ahead and create a character, I wanted to confirm that the use of a custom lineage is ok. I am leaning toward the creation of a wizard that will follow the bladesinger tradition at level 2. Also, if that is not going to mix well with the party, I can consider another option. I am not totally set on anything. Thanks.
Please excuse me if I leave too many holes to be filled later, but I'm just not sure how much of your sample post and the Pathfinder players guide is actually going to be followed for this campaign.
Character Name: Barthen "Bart" Lamplighter Race: Human (variant) Class: Fighter (planned cavalier) Ability Scores: standard array Brief Backstory: Hailing from Mut, the simple-minded Bart is a former member of the Taldan Phalanx who was discharged after a mysterious illness affected his ability to soldier (he is unknowingly allergic to cats). He returned home briefly before being sent away to Heldren to live with his aunt and uncle to get over the disappointment of being discharged. He now has a horse named Fode and is an honorary lawman in Heldren. Not so brief backstory:
Bart is the youngest of three boys born to Vikram Lamplighter of Mut. The Lamplighters have maintained the Glory's Flame lighthouse in Mut for generations. Despite the prestige this position holds, Bart has never been interested in following in his father's footsteps. He has always wanted to be a soldier. As soon as he came of age, he ran away to Oppara with his best friend, Delgan, to join the military. A lover of all animals, but especially horses, Bart hoped to be able to join the ranks of the Taldan Horse, but his recruiter was disappointed in Bart's slow thinking and relegated him to the Taldan Phalanx. Delgan was assigned to the Taldan Imperial Navy, and so the two never saw each other again. Bart did well as a member of the Phalanx, though he never advanced in rank due to his lack of ambition to do more than was expected of him as a grunt. He is strong, quick on his feet, and follows orders well, so despite his slow thinking, and in spite of his natural likeability, his commanding officers were generally oblivious to him. During his years as part of the Phalanx, Bart never saw any combat. Alas, it was an allergy that brought an end to his military career. A cat was brought into the barracks as a new addition. Bart had never been around cats before and didn't know he was allergic. The extended exposure to the cat's dander affected Bart's breathing and even vision. Over the course of a month, Bart began to be noticed for his reduced energy and apparent deteriorating eyesight. Bart was honorably discharged from the Phalanx. He returned to Mut, disappointed and downtrodden. Despite their happiness at their son's return, the Lamplighters were sad to see him so disappointed. It was especially frustrating when he inexplicably recovered from his mysterious illness. He returned to Oppara, but they would not accept him again. After only a couple of months of being at home, Bart's mother sent him 200 miles away to the small village of Heldren to stay with her sister and brother-in-law for as long as it took to lift his spirits. Along the way, he acquired a horse he calls Fode. Bart and Fode have become a comfortable part of Heldren. As a former member of the Taldan Phalanx, Bart assumed the role of a sort of lawman, helping to enforce the rules and keep the peace. In many ways, the people of Heldren have learned to placate the simple Bart while enjoying his good humor and excellent work ethic. He's always willing to help out — no matter what good thing he's asked to do. It also helps that his uncle and aunt — bakers by trade — are so well liked.
Brief Backstory: Omaro used to be a sword for hire. He used to be a wealthy, for a merc. He used to enjoy his job. That was all before he lost his memory. Left for dead on a battlefield, he had survived physically but his mind had not. Not knowing any different, his ancestry drew him back to the wild. He wandered into the woods looking for food. His mind had been slowly returning to him over the years and that's what had led him to the Border Woods and then onto Heldren. He knew civilization held a better life than that of the wilds, but beyond that he had no idea what to expect.
Before I go ahead and create a character, I wanted to confirm that the use of a custom lineage is ok. I am leaning toward the creation of a wizard that will follow the bladesinger tradition at level 2. Also, if that is not going to mix well with the party, I can consider another option. Character Name: Alva Elkheart Race: Human (Variant) Class: Ranger (Beastmaster) Ability Scores: Point Buy Brief Backstory: Born and raised in Irrisen, Alva has been no stranger to the savagery of the ruling class of witches that control the region. To get by in the land of eternal winter, she learned to hunt. While not as skilled with the bow as many of her peers, she displayed prowess with the axe and shield. Her mother and father were taken away from the village on charges of 'treason against the Jadwiga', prompting her to flee Irrisen as soon as she had the chance. Managing to evade the border huts, she escaped to the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, before wandering further south. She's staying temporarily in Heldren for a day or two to restock on supplies before hitting the road once more. Little does she realize, she might have to confront her past sooner than she had hoped for.
