I'm new to D&D and I'm making my characters back story, part of it includes having his father losing a lute battle with a devil or demon which leads to his father being sent to D&D's version of Hell. I was wondering if there is a specific demon or devil monster that makes such bets with people? Basically a "Devil Went Down To Georgia" type thing.
In D&D devils reside in a nine layered plane called the Nine Hells. The Nine hells are full of devils both greater and minor that have pacts with mortals for various reasons. If you want a stereotypical pact offering type of devil for this scenario you could use the Horned Devil in the Monster Manual. If you want to make this pact more interesting and important I would suggest using an Arch-Devil, but you would need to contrive some reason why an Arch-Devil would take a personal interest in your character's father. Mortal's are the equivalent of cosmic slime or insects to an arch-devil. Maybe your player character's father has once in a life time talent and attracted the attention of an Arch-Devil in the guise of a mortal. In this scenario I would make use of an arch-devil that has artistry and pleasure as a sphere of influence such as Fierna Lord of Phlegethos or Glasya Lord of Malboge.
I would say it wouldn't be likely for one of the archdevils to be directly involved in that type of situation. But some of their lessers might take care of such a challenge. Perhaps an archdevil would be more involved if it knew it would get something greater than just that one persons soul. Perhaps it knows that if this soul is brought here it will be a draw for something more significant down the line, creatures like this are more than willing to wait for a generation to achieve something greater.
Dispater or more likely one of his minions would be a potential option for something like this that has to do with grand schemes,
For a more greed oriented reason Mammon would be an excellent choice, he is expanding his armies to try and take over another level and can always use another damned to add to the ranks.
I am just looking through my old Book of Vile Darkness and trying to get the gist of what this might entail.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Going with Demons, the best choices might be either the Demon Lord Graz'zt or the Succubus Queen Malcanthet. Either them of have courts that would use the seductive nature of a bard.
Another direction are hags, like a Night Hag. Long term plots involving mortals and unclear aims is bread and butter for them.

Yeah absolutely, I tend to forget about the night hags.

Pathfinder did an interesting take, which could easily be converted. A Phistophilus Devil, it was called. Easily Googlible.
